Big upgrade from coffee maker with hot plate
Coffee tastes smooth, no more burned taste. Insulated carafe keeping my coffee hot for an hour and warm for 2+ hours. The lid is spring sealed for the gaskets, weight of filter and coffee brewing allows coffee to flow into carafe. When finished, the basket becomes lighter so it will seal coffee freshness. To pour coffee, the lid does have a thumb lever to press and open pouring spout (seal). Caution do not use lever to open lid from carafe, risk damage. Filter basket is flat bottom design, simple & easy to clean. I empty my coffee grounds in to my flower bed daily, it smells great outside, my plants love it, once in a while just turn over garden soil. I don't use program functions, press power button once, it turns blue indicating power and brews coffee and automatically shuts off and secondary timer starts showing when it was brewed and how long, nice. Self clean function to rescale mineral deposits, nice touch (auto button). Reason for upgrade, tired of breaking glass carafes, the replacements cost almost half of a decent coffee maker. This was on sale, normally $140-$150 at Canadian Tire. I got this on sale $70.

    I am very pleased with this 12 cup coffeemaker. After using “pods” and “cups” to make a single coffee, I am enjoying this coffeemaker with a sturdy stainless steel carafe, instead of a glass one. The coffee drips into the carafe and is “airtight” until you press the lever to pour out contents.
    The coffee stays hot and fresh tasting for hours. The carafe is of excellent quality and feels substantial. It has enough programmable options, that are simple to use. Enjoying the smell of coffee brewing once again! We are very happy with this purchase and the stainless and colour looks elegant and modern.

    I recently bought this coffeemaker and felt it was a good choice for the money, plus it had strong online reviews.

    The pros:
    -Simple design makes for easy setup and use
    -Very large 12 cup thermal carafe is great
    -Carafe pours cleanly and fast
    -Carafe has a wide opening, big enough to fit your hand in for cleaning. This is a huge plus for me.
    -Coffee tastes good, AFTER I fixed the plastic taste

    The cons:
    -LCD screen is not backlit, making reading it during the day difficult and impossible at night unless the lights in the room are bright
    -LCD screen is mounted in a manner such that I have to crouch down to read it
    -Water reservoir difficult to clean

    So, the plastic taste. I bought this unit and immediately hated it because the smell of plastic was so strong when brewing and I felt like I could taste it in the coffee. Interestingly, my wife didn't notice it. So I started reading online and apparently some people are more sensitive to the plastic taste than others. I tried cleaning it with soap and water and running a water/vinegar solution through the machine to no avail. Then I tried running about 5-6 cycles of the machine with a mix of 8 cups of water and 1.5 cups of 70% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol followed by several cycles of fresh water and that seemed to do the trick! My coffee this morning had no plastic smell and tasted great!

    This unit replaces my Hamilton Beach (HB) Stay & Go Thermal Coffeemaker which lasted 7 years until the on-off relay wouldn't engage and auto brew became useless. The price for the B&D is comparable to what I paid for the HB and is more reasonable than other Thermal Coffeemakers. My research indicates through Consumers Reports the B&D coffeemakers have a higher reliability than the HB. We shall see.

    I have only used the B&D once and don't find many of the issues that other reviewers report. It fits well under my kitchen cabinets (13" high) and looks great. Easy set up, the auto brew function works fine, easy pouring compared to the HB and makes great coffee. The Sneak-a-cup feature works well if you tilt the carafe slightly towards the machine as you return it to its place. The only observation that I can make at this time is that the filter basket is built a bit flimsier than the HB.

    If I experience problems I will edit my review.

    Update: Dec 2018 - Six months after purchase the machine failed to brew even though the power light was lit. I contacted B&D and they will send a replacement when I send $6.00, the plug end of the chord and proof of purchase.
    This breakdown is very inconvenient
    I still think that the machine brewed great coffee however it was very annoying that the display was not back-lit. It is hard to read. We'll see how long the replacement unit lasts.

    We ordered this on Black Friday 2018 and it came by the next Wednesday, so we've now had a few weeks to use it. While we cannot comment on durability yet, we are so far very pleased with this machine. We did read the reviews before purchasing and decided it had all of the features we wanted at a very reasonable price.
    PROs: thermal carafe keeps coffee hot and won't break like the glass ones do; very easy to use; very easy to clean; love the different strength of brew options and the 1-4 cup option is clever.
    CONs: I only wish the brew strength and the 1-4 cup option could be activated simultaneously. It's not a big deal, we either put in only 4 cups of water and use the "bold" strength or we use an extra tbsp of coffee with the 1-4 cup option. But I was mildly disappointed when I tried to activate them both.
    Hoping this machine lasts a few years, it's been a joy to use so far!

    Of all the coffee makers I've ever owned, this one must be the absolute worst. Initially I liked it. The pot keeps the coffee warm for hours.... and the issues I had with it, I figured I'd "get used to it".

    Well, after nearly three months of use, I can say "there is no getting used to this".

    It is virtually impossible to fill the pot with water, and poor it into the maker, without spilling.
    The pot drips like crazy when you poor coffee from it. I am constantly cleaning up messes.

    Futhermore, in the last month - it stopped working correctly. I have to keep turning it back on, as it shuts off mid way through its brewing cycle. Even if I hit the button 37 times, and get a full pot: It still turns off the burner, so the coffee cools off quicker than it should.

    Not only would I never buy this again, but I wouldn't buy a black & decker coffee maker again. While the spillage issues might be specific to this model - the power issues are due to poor quality parts. Back to sunbeam for me.

    I have purchased 2 of these coffee makers, one for home and one for the office over the last couple of years. The teflon liner in the pots breaks apart after awhile. The teflon flakes end up in your coffee making it undrinkable. I believe the newer models have changed to a non teflon liner. If you are purchasing check to see if it's an older model. Other than that the overall performance of the unit is good. The thermal pot keeps the coffee hot for a good couple of hours.

    We've been using this machine for over a year now. This machine is awesome. The controls are easy to use and the coffee stays hot.
    I have read people complaining that if they fill the water and want just 3-4 cups of coffee they get a whole pot. Duh. It's not a smart machine. It will brew until all the water is gone. So if you want 4 cups, use 4 cups of water.
    To those who complain about the carafe dribbling - I will admit it's a bit of a learning curve. When you are pouring, don't pour too fast or the coffee will leak out under the lid a bit. When you are done pouring, keep the top open by keeping your thumb on the little "lever" while you put the carafe back into the upright position so any excess coffee will go back into the carafe instead of onto your countertop or floor.
    I love that this keeps the coffee hot by much more than the 2 hours they claim.

    It was a decent deal price-wise, and arrived with no issues. B&D Makes great coffee makers. Harder to find the Steel Carafes these days, I have had 3 of these over the last 15-16 yrs. some for me, some as a gift.

    I just opened this coffee maker to find it used and damaged. The lid is scratched, the carafe is dented and clearly has coffee residue inside, the manual has coffee/water damage, the water tank has water residue in it as well. I am requesting a refund.
