Below is my first review of this plugable 2.0 camera scope. I liked it immediately but became disappointed when it fell apart so quickly. I must have received a factory friday reject by accident. I applied for a return authorization one day late so was unable to get a refund from 鶹. Plugable saw my review and contacted me to see if I would like to have a replacement sent as my experience was not typical for this product. I gladly accepted the offer and I am LOVING! this little camera. I went through a Sourcing Bay handheld with 3" screen and a Supereyes 5MP auto fine focus coming in at over $150 and over $250 respectively in my search for a decent camera for my purposes. All that experience did was frustrate me to no end and I mourned the loss of that first week with my plugable.
This little plugable blows the more expensive competition away. The clarity of the images even on the highest magnification was staggering as compared to the other 2 cams mentioned here. Supereyes claims 500X but my plugable at 250X outperformed in magnification and image quality. I can't believe the performance of this camera at $45! If you are disappointed then something is not right with the unit. Contact plugable and let them know your concerns. I am so impressed with the integrity of this little company. I highly recommend this product and the company that makes it.
This little camera started out great. I was happy with it for the first 2 weeks. It quickly became very difficult to keep in focus after that. Twist, twist, twist...wind, wind, wind. I found it challenging to keep it at the mag and focus level I wanted to work with at any given time. The mechanism at the top of the cam designed to take the shot never did work from the outset. That was annoying as reaching for the track pad often screwed up the shot. I use it handheld not mounted. The ring covering the led lights detached and flopped around loose after week 2 of use. I set the cam on my chair to answer the phone one day. It rolled off and hit the vinyl floor in the kitchen. A sizeable chunk broke off the housing around the lights and cracked right up to the focus wheel. Images were blurry after that. I was "ONE" day late when I tried to return it so was unable to do so. That's what happens to us procrastinators. I just received its replacement today. I bought the mobile microscope with built in display. I will let you know how that pans out once I have had the chance to play with it.
All that said, the Plugable 2.0 is capable of being a great little camera if you are very gentle with it and do not use it every day. For $45 it is a great device to have on hand should you need it for the odd thing. Based on my own experience I would not expect it to last long for a child or an everyday user. I also found the base to be useless. It is top heavy so falls over all the time. The suction cup does not hold its grip. When functioning optimally this camera has superb image quality for the price point.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 3, 2025Verified PurchaseI bought one of these based on reviews from colleagues n the coin community. Biggest fault is suction mount sometimes breaks and haven't found good solution for ensuring the seal remains intact. Pluggable makes some other nice gear but I found it a bit high priced depending on what your needs are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great resolution and depth of field. Easy to use. Well worth the money. Grade: A+
Verified PurchaseFirst, I would like to address a complaint seen in a few other reviews. They claim the suction cup that holds the base is weak and the setup topples over. I think they must have not noticed the mechanical lever on the base that creates super strong suction - there's no way it can topple over when this lever is deployed.
Okay, with that out of the way, here's my review. This little camera is amazing. Easy setup and easy install of the software on Windows. The software is intuitive. Perhaps the best feature is the adjustable picture resolution in the settings. Resolution ranges from 160x120 up to 1600x1200. It's with that maximum resolution that I took the picture of the beetle included with this review. The depth of field is excellent. The software allows for photos, adjustable time-lapse photography, and video recording.
I bought this unit to give me some magnification to help prepare slides for my "big" microscope. But this little scope works so well that I'm using it for all manner of looking at the itty-bitty world around us - things that are too large to put under the big scope but too small to see in any detail with the naked eye. Easy to use and just a lot of fun, too.
As for magnification, that's achieved by bringing the lens and the object being looked at closer together (or further apart). There's a clear plastic ring at the bottom of the camera that allows the camera to stand over the object being viewed. To achieve maximum magnification, take the camera off the adjustable arm and place it right over the object. As you turn the focus, the image becomes sharp, then continue turning the focus ring - the image goes out of focus, but as you turn, it comes back into focus at the maximum magnification.
My one criticism is that there are no instructions in the package to explain how to use/change magnification. However, their customer support is great. I sent a query about this on the company's support page on their website. I received a reply within hours that was very clear and helpful. However, it would have been better to have the magnification information included in the setup/how to use instructions that came with the camera.
I highly recommend this. Great for adults and kids alike. A+

- Reviewed in Canada on October 20, 2024Verified PurchaseIt works well. But it has only one magnification.
Using it connected to laptop, the software for it thinks the laptop camera is the microscope, so every time I start the App I have to go into the settings and reverse it in the drop down menu to laptop camera, then it switches to microscope camera.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 29, 2025Verified PurchaseTook a lot longer to get this to work than it should have. Checked all settings that would have anything to do with this, nothing made a difference until I dropped a shortcut for the software onto my desktop... go figure.
Other than that, it works good for what I'm using it for.
I would have given 5 stars if the installation automatically made a desktop shortcut, would have saved me a lot of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great microscope with features not all others offer
Verified PurchaseI've tried a handful of USB microscopes and this one is the best so far. Two things warrant mention. The first is the camera adjustments available under Windows and the other is resolution. The Plugable software (Windows version is all I've used), which requires download, can be set to auto adjust brightness but it can be manually adjusted too. My application requires locking exposure and this microscope can do it. That isn't the case for the other microscopes I've tested. It also isn't a feature mentioned by manufacturers. For my application, autoranging is undesirable. The ability to control exposure makes this scope stand out and why I like it so much. I am baffled by the magnification numbers given by manufacturers. This scope gives equal or higher magnification compared to others claiming 1600X. To change magnification, the scope is positioned above an object and focused. There is no zoom. All the others I've tried operate the same way. I've enclosed results at distances of 0, 20 and 40 mm from the clear plastic guard showing a 1 mm scale. I've also shown a penny's date at 0 and 40 mm. A penny is nominally 19 mm with 1 in the date being about 1.17mm or so. While the scope is great, I am not a fan of the flexible mount when operating at maximum magnification. Touching the microscope to focus or adjust lighting causes annoying movement. It is easy to get in a seemingly endless loop of adjust, move the object, readjust. I have a more rigid stand and find it to be far easier to use due both to rigidity and gears to move the microscope up and down. Circling back to software control, the camera app native to Windows can be used with add-on setting apps to set exposure and other options. Other USB microscopes have most of these setting greyed out whether in the Windows settings or in the apps supplied. They just aren't available.. I find the Plugable app does everything I want to do and does it quite nicely. Still pictures, videos and time-lapse are all available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the $60 AU Price tag.
Verified PurchaseIMAGES:
* Letter "P" on manual, lens against surface
* Tip of a pen on camera board, with camera in socket
* Seiko Automatic watch face. The LED glare lights is because of the glass face reflecting back.
IMPORTANT THINGS:
*** Camera gets picked up automatically (Win 10) as a standard device, so you can use ANY software that can call up the output, you don't need weird drivers or software. I use program called WebCamViewer (single exe about 250K) to test devices (I work in IT), and it works fine. (link is https://www.bustatech.com/webcamviewer-a-simple-viewer-for-webcam/), but you can use a MILLION different programs on the net, they just need to work on webcams, and the more complex software can do more complex things, that one I linked is just good for testing purposes - it can take snapshots as well btw.
*** Plug it into a USB3 port as apparently all my USB2 ports don't put out enough power to drive the camera AND the LED lights. Camera kept "switching off" randomly (probably the port being overloaded). As soon as I went USB3, problem gone. I even plugged in a 60cm (about 2 feet) USB M-F extension cable to get extra distance, and it worked perfectly.
REVIEW:
Bought it "as a toy", as I wanted to see what a low Pixel CMOS chip might work like (as far as I know the chip only had 640x480 hardware, with interpolation for anything higher).
* For distance/focus/zoom reference, if you hold it about 30cm (1 foot) away from your face, you will fit both eyes into the frame width wise. If you put the camera down flat against the shroud on a piece of paper, you will see about 5mm across.
If you put it against your skin, you can focus in and see a DISTURBING level of detail, and if you place it against say, the instruction manual it came with, you can clearly see the pixellation effect from the ink-drop-firing machines it was printed with. You do get a bit of that "constant fuzziness" as the camera (they all do it) constantly scans the image, but is not bad enough to count as a negative.
I'm sure devices like these that cost $200 and up have much higher hardware resolution, but this one works really damn well for it's price range.
The focusing ring is easy to manipulate while holding the camera, and can work as a normal webcam. although you need to mess with distances. Even pointed into my bedroom from the PC room about 20 metes away and saw my annoying cat looking back, with exactly the same clarity as my old Logitech webcam.
Very impressed with my value for money.
