Customer Review

The review is based on my hair type and styling below:

HAIR TYPE: Medium brown, medium length (about 8" in the front), straight fine texture.
STYLING: My go-to style is loosely pushed-back or a 60/40 part. I do run my hands through my hair pretty often I like the ability to do so in a product that I choose.

I have experience with many Matte styling products that I have used over the years. This is my go-to styling product as a matte product works best for my hair type. It thickens up my hair and creates a texture that I do not naturally have.

I have previously purchased the Layrite natural matte cream and liked the product but was looking for something with a little more hold. This leads us to Layrite Cement Hair Clay, I was excited to receive the product and try out the Layrites 'clay' version of the Natural Matte Cream - come to find out that there aren't any actual clay ingredients in the Cement clay (which isn't a huge issue to me, as long as it performs as a clay).

I have applied the product to my hair in 2 different ways:

    1. Dry, pre-styled hair
    - This is my favorite way of applying any product, it works best for my hair type.
    - Cement clay on dry hair comes with a little bit of tug and pull, this product is a high hold and sticky consistency. It drys quickly and can become difficult to run a comb through (so work fast).
-The final look adds texture and hold but would not classify this as a "Matte" product more of a Natural/healthy finish. This may look best for dark-coloured hair but for my hair type, it can start to look greasy throughout the day as I run my hands through it. I am also comparing a 'Matte' finish to products that I have used in the past (i.e Moroccanoil Texture Clay, O'Douds Matte Paste, By Vilain Gold Digger). To me, those are true matte products leaving the hair with a super dry finish.
-Good hold throughout the day but nothing that is hard like a gel, I can still run my hands through my hair with ease and no tug/pull.

    2. 80% dry hair
-I found not drying the hair fully will help the application of the product and reduce the initial tug and pull. Although it was easier to spread throughout the hair I found the product doesn't dry Matte. In this type of application, it seemed to dry even more with a shine compared to dry hair. As I mentioned above I don't like the way this makes my hair look as it can start to become stringy and greasy looking.
    - Once the hair was completely dry with the product I circled back with another small finger size of the product and applied it on top. This slightly reduced the greasy look but started to weigh down my hair from the amount of product in my hair.

This product seems to dull up the longer it is in the hair, so if it seems a bit shiny to start it will slightly matte-out as the day goes out but will not become a full matte product.

I had high hopes after trying the Layrite Natural Cream but for me, this product was good but wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I do prefer the Natural Cream over the Cement Clay - I find the holds to be similar for the amount that I touch my hair throughout the day. Maybe a high hold is not the product I should be using for my hair length but wanted to share my experience.

NOTE: I will be getting a haircut in 3 weeks, looking to cut about 2 inches off and add in some layers. I will edit my review to see If this product reacts any differently with a slightly shorter cut.
