A nice replacement for my antique

- Reviewed in Canada on January 28, 2025Verified PurchaseI needed to replace my older square that had now become difficult to read due to metal discoloration, and a lack of square that a could not fix. I have three squares based on different size ranges and this one fits in the middle. I had purchased a collection of files from Preciva that have turned out quite nicely so figured I would give them a try for this. At first I was a little concerned because when I checked it after an accident drop it was not actually square. Taking a hex wrench though I simply loosened the two screws, moved it to square, and then tightened again. A nice little engraving at the pivot point makes this relatively easy as you align to the marking.
There is a nice little scribe in the hilt but I am not sure how much I will use it except as a sharp point that could work like a pin. I likely won’t use the scribe because the holes in the ruler are the perfect size for my Pica Dry pencil. I was not sure how handy the edge support would be on the hilt but admittedly it is quite handy when scribing along an edge. Using the square to set the level on a wire shelf, the edge support helped make holding the square with one finger rather easy too.
Aside from the initial realization that I may have knocked it out of square, it feels sturdy and well made. The accidental drop didn’t leave any marks on it, and the screws ensure that you can reset it.

- Reviewed in Canada on March 27, 2025Verified PurchaseA good size square for woodworking.
I wish it had metric markings on one edge, but I mostly use it for marking full lines across boards anyway so not a big issue.
It was not square out of the box, but a machinist’s square and a 3mm hex wrench soon put it right.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 19, 2025Verified PurchaseA great square! I have another lighter weight one, but I like this one even better, feels sturdy, the built in level and edge support are super handy. The pin to quickly locate angles is excellent as well. All in a great option if you need a new square.

- Reviewed in Canada on January 18, 2025Verified PurchaseThis is a great square. It is larger than a traditional framing square which has been useful for a couple layout jobs. I like that it is am "L" shaped square with the ability to lay out angle like a "triangle" shaped square. The build in level and scriber are a nice touch.

- Reviewed in Canada on June 25, 2025Verified PurchaseBeware... This carpenter square was not a true 90 degree! I set it against a straight edge and drew 2 parallel lines about an inch apart for the full length of the ruler side. There was 1/8th of an inch difference between the bottom of the 2 line and the top. Also set it against 3 other bigger longer trusted squares and confirmed. Returned it for a refund.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice feel. Weird sizing.
Verified PurchaseThere are many nice things about this square. It's very solid and sturdy, markings are clear, has a scale on the short edge (one reason I bought it) holes at inch markings for scribing lines, angle pin, etc.
There is some bad, too. The black finish is flat like a chalk board, and picks up marks easily. More annoyingly, the widths of both the black scale and orange bar are weird, maybe metric? If those dims were simply 1-3/4" and not xx/32", it would get 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
Pros:
- Square (as expected)
- Easy to read measurements
- Markings on both sides
- Includes a scribe (screwed in)
- Built in bubble level
Cons:
- None
This is a great square with lots of features that rival much more expensive woodworking squares. It includes a plethora of measures for length and angles. A bubble level is built in and has a scribe screwed into the base for convenience. The base is thick with a lip that slides well against materials. My unit came perfectly square.
Overall a great value considering the name brand ones can cost up to 10x as much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Accurate and Useful
This Preciva 12” Carpenter Square Ruler is made of a strong aluminum-alloy metal ensuring durability. The convenient bubble leveler helps make sure your square ruler is level. The ruler on the edge has measurements down to 1/16" to get more accurate markings. I do like that the attached scribing needle is attached to the side, so I won’t lose it.
On the edge of the square (the orange side) there’s a lip to lay against the board being measured in order to be most accurate angles and measurements. It’s not that thick but fits nicely on the edge of my work piece. It’s as easy to use and simple as laying it flat against the board, with the orange lip fully covering the edge which gives accuracy and the best reading. Measuring it against my digital angle finders and other squares I know to be perfect 90 degrees, the is right on making it a useful tool in my shop. This is certainly not one of those $50.00 to $100.00 squares, but I can’t tell the difference. It's a very nice tool for the price.
