Easy to setup, cheap, and awful
The headset itself was pretty okay for the first day or two of gentle usage, however Oculus (or now, meta) was incredibly difficult to work with. But after making an account, and going through the quick and easy setup guide, it was all ready to work. I used SteamVR instead of the OVR (oculus virtual reality) store, because Oculus is totally untrustworthy when it comes to actually keeping your account existing (more on that later) When setup and playing, the picture quality and refresh rate is fairly okay when compared to older model HTC headsets, but the IPD adjustment is electronic and only goes to 72 mm. That is not enough for more than 30% of the population, meaning that if you are part of that unlucky 30% (like me), you can’t see things so well But, after a week of using it I suddenly needed a new account. Why? Because my Facebook account was randomly terminated, and you need one to use your OVR headset But no big deal, I will just make a new email and make a new account. But that one got terminated too after another week, so every week you need to make a new email and facebook account. But then, the real problem. Material quality, and software After just a month, the foam guards on the headset began to just fall off. But no big deal, just buy some new leather ones for $50 But then the actual software just randomly forgets things. “oh uh no, no controller is paired even though you just paired it 20 seconds ago. oh uhh no displayport connection even though you literally just had one and there was no changes to your connection” It’s all just a bunch of unreliable garbage that isn’t even onsale anymore The headset and controllers do look good though 8/10 aesthetics 1/10 everything else Avoid OVR headsets all together if possible

For a system that does not use base stations the tracking is very good. Overall build quality is great, feels and looks very nice, solid construction. Very comfortable as well, the head strap and band in designed in a way that I could see it working well for almost anyone. Weight on the head and face is not very noticeable.

Image quality is very good overall, lots of detail and good colors. The lenses are very clear and have a large sweet spot where the image looks sharp and clear. OLED units have better blacks and slightly better colors but I actually prefer this as you can see more detail in dark areas. I have switched between an OLED brand and this in Alyx at the same save point and for some objects and dark areas it is very noticeable how much more detail you can see.

The controllers are very light comfortable and easy to use. Oculus has done an outstanding job putting this system together for this price.

The only downsides for me are the field of view and the screen door effect. SDE isn't bad but is noticeable sometimes. The field of view is a bit limited, when I get into a game it's easy to ignore but to me this is by for the biggest area where there is a lot of room for improvement. Higher frame rates would be another one, have not tried one of the 120+ fps HMDs so I can't say if I can see the difference but I get a little bit of a feeling that things are not as smooth as they could be.

This is my first VR setup. It's utterly stable and reliable and works sooo well. I am very tall my kids aren't and yet switching between us between games has not caused any issues for me. We take it off, put it down and don't use it for a couple days...when we come back to it, no adjustment necessary, it just works all the time. This is what I perhaps love the most, an utterly reliable experience. On that note, let me say that I love VR and am truly impressed with the visual quality of the Rift S. It's a great design with awesome performance. I have a Geforce 1080 and performance is flawless so far. The game selection is awesome and impressive. this is a must buy.

Let me say again, VR is way better than I expected. The Oculus demo that gets you up to speed on VR is amazing for showing friends. They have all previously been "meh" about VR...until I showed them the demo, they are all convinced now, it's here to stay. It's that convincing and beautiful.

The displays are excellent in the headset. The screen door effect (which I was most concerned about originally) is so minimized as to be a non issue. This alone makes the Rift S a worthy upgrade. I'm not concerned about 80hz vs 90hz panels, having a consistent frame rate is more important imho...it really comes down to immersion and screen door effect more than anything takes me out of the moment, provided the other equipment in the chain is up to the task.

The inside out tracking works very well, Though my arms are long and I find I can reach beyond what the inside out tracking can track with arm movements at shoulder height, though it should be noted a firmware update has improved this considerably. It's not generally an issue at all, but it has been an issue a couple times.

I'm still amazed at how stable the headset is and how it doesn't lose calibration or suffer drift. It's so solid. That kind of reliability is huge and contributes to that the feeling you get from the device that it's a fully realized product.

They nailed it with this product.

From the start, things went terribly. I had windows 7, I start the installation process. I get a message saying I need 2 updates from Microsoft, I do them. I try again, it tells me the same thing, so I look around and apparently it's a common issue, ok, weird. I need to run the setup with cmd and a special command to bypass the screen. So that works, I move on. Now it forces me to install on C: which I keep only for windows. Google again, to be able to install on another drive, I need to run the install using cmd and a special command. Really? Ya'll can't afford to put a text box on your setup to write a path? So I do what it says, I run it with my two special commands to skip the update page and install on different drive. At this point I'm already feeling weird but I decide to ignore it. The download starts, approx. 7GB. Eventually the download suddenly freezes 2MBs from the end. Now I'm losing patience. Nothing I can do, so I close the setup and try again. Only now because I closed it there's some background process messing up the setup so I end up rebooting. Try the download again, this time it ends fine. I move on to the installation process which takes forever. But that works fine too, then I get to a screen telling me to plug 2 USBs and a displayport. But I only have 1 usb cable attached to the headgear. Anyway I plug it in, then the oculus software starts trippin and opens a bunch of windows in a constant loop, each time ending in errors. I close them all and try it again multiple times, reinstall, everything, nothing works. So I'm thinking it must be windows 7 issues. I end up upgrading to win 10. Now everything should work, right? Start the whole process again. This time the setup downloads the files at 0 mbps (but I see the bar moving so whatever). Once that's all done, I see a screen I hadn't seen before. I get to choose which rift I have, so I choose RIFT S and now it shows me the right amount of USB ports. So I plug the USB, works fine, then I plug in the displayport. Displayport gets recognized for 1 second then turns red and won't work. Many hours of trying various things later, no luck. I try to opt in for the beta thing since apparently it can fix the displayport issue. I download the updates, run the firmware update on the headgear. Try again but now the usb isn't working anymore. I try reinstalling everything, rebooting, nothing works. So I'm returning it, I've never seen such a bad software in my life, and I'm a programmer. Truly shameful product, I'll be saving my money and getting a vive later on instead.

Not worth it if you're gonna use this for entertainment though. Who wears a helmet to the cinema?

The item arrived much faster than the estimated day which was a good surprise. I have only been using it for a few days and am in love with it. I'm new to VR so it can feel a bit scary and weird. And I'm still exploring and figuring out what it can do. I'm thrilled in beat saber right now. I suspect in time technology will advance so the wire won't be an issue. (For the most part it's not, but sometimes in the passion of a game you feel the long wire attachment getting in the way).

    I love this equipment.

    5.0 out of 5 stars L’Oculus Rift S
Reviewed in France on May 24, 2025
    Verified Purchase

    5.0 out of 5 stars Confronto Rift-s e Rift CV1 per simracing
Reviewed in Italy on October 16, 2019
    Verified Purchase
