A very Super Movie
Zack Snyder definitely does not disappoint with this origin story. Very excellent movie that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats. Henry Cavill portrays Superman very well for this new generation of DC fans (2013). Special Features and 3D is super.

    VIDEO (3D):

It should be first pointed out that Man Of Steel is another product of post-conversion. The 1080p MVC 3D picture was converted from native 2D by Legend 3D with stereoography by Curus Gladstone and James Prola. Shot with a combination of traditional 35mm film and the Red Epic digital camera system, this latest iteration of the legendary superhero is far more impressive in its native 2D format. This transfer comes with a good deal of depth and dimensionality in various scenes. The action-packed sequences full of CGI spectacle are comparatively the best, as near field objects show great separation from the background and often seem to float in midair. Overall, the post-conversion is nicely done but it lacks the sort of immersive effect we expect from the format. (4/5)

    VIDEO (2D):

Man of Steel (2D) flies onto blu ray with MPEG-4 AVC 1080p 2.40:1 encode. This transfer has a thin-layer of grain throughout, providing the movie with an attractive cinematic quality. Facial complexions are very revealing with excellent lifelike textures, and the clothing, especially the Kryptonian outfits, exposes every stitch and thread of the fabric. The gritty cinematography of Amir Mokri favours a stylized and heavily subdued look, giving the film an overcast and somber appeal. In spite of a noticeable toned-down contrast, the picture still yields remarkable clarity and resolution in the far distance, revealing the smallest window or tiniest antenna atop buildings. Black levels are inky and true. Overall, this transfer is top-notch. (5/5)

    AUDIO (3D & 2D):

Man of Steel has an incredibly forceful DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix. From the start, the movie opens with a wall of sound that doesn't let up until the last of the end credits, filling the screen and the room in general with the music of Hans Zimmer. With a remarkably detailed and sharply extensive mid-range, the listener can enjoy each note and individual instrument within the orchestration. The dynamic design is full of warmth and fidelity, peaking into the upper frequencies with incredible, room-penetrating clarity while still maintaining superb distinction and intelligibility in the dialogue. During action-packed sequences, anything from jets, helicopters, alien spacecrafts and Kryptonians speeding across the sky pan from one speaker to the next with exhilarating realism and flawless movement. Every explosion unloads a surge of gravel, dirt and rock that then rains down all around with amazing clarity and continues to bounce further away. Subtle atmospherics, like leaves blowing in the wind, birds flying overhead or city traffic, are employed to fill in the quieter, dialogue-driven moments. Simply an excellent immersive soundtrack. (5/5)

    TRIVIA:

Man of Steel has an estimated budget of $225 million, but has a worldwide gross of $661 million.

    CRITICISM:

Packaging: I do not appreciate Warner Bros to be so cheap as to stack on the 3D blu ray disc onto of the 2D version. A flipcase housing each disc is not that much more expensive.

Major criticism: Just like Star Trek Into Darkness, where the Special Features were split among different retailers, the same applies to this movie too. Walmart got an exclusive 2 extra featurettes, while Target got 5 extra featurettes, when compared to the version that I bought from 鶹.ca. This is not the fault of 鶹, but the studios’ greed. I am sure that some time in the future, a Super Deluxe Special Collector’s Edition will be released combining all the Special Features.

By the way, this type of Special Feature splitting also happened to Pacific Rim, Iron Man 3, etc. Interestingly, it did not happen to The Hobbit: An Extended Journey – Extended Edition. And I’d bet that it was director Peter Jackson who wisely stopped it from happening.

    FINAL THOUGHTS:

From a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, Man of Steel surprises with its thoughtful reimagining of Superman's origins and the personal challenges he faces in his journey to becoming the iconic hero he's known for being. Director Zack Snyder brings his usual bombastic flair but manages to deliver the sort of comic book adaptation fans love to watch and will hopefully serve as the beginning of a new franchise. I bought the 3D version because I like to collect all the blockbuster 3D movies. Since this 3D is a post-conversion, the 2D version is cheaper and of more value.

    It’s Super.

That is the best way, in a slightly corny style, to sum up this wonderful movie.

It is a great Superman movie. It’s an amazing Superman story. And it is most definitively a Superman for the here and now.

What follows is a SPOILER FREE look at the Man Of Steel film.

The basic beats all Superman origin stories encompass, and needs to, is that Kal-El is born on Krypton to Jor-El and Lara-El. Around this same time, Jor-El reveals that the planet is about to explode. Kal is sent to Earth and is found by a kindly couple named Jonathan and Martha Kent. They do there best raising a son with what could described as unique abilities. Upon adulthood, when the threat of danger presents itself, Clark Kent as he now is called, steps up to do the right thing. He becomes Superman!

And you are all saying: We Know This Already!

Yes, yes, you do. The basics everyone knows, almost like it is bonded to our DNA upon birth. Everything else is gravy added to the mix, all to bring humanity and texture and twists to the mythos.

And this film delivers all this in spades. Even with all my massive love and admiration for the original movie, I have long thought it was time to put it to rest. It is an undeniable classic, along with the sequel, but the slavish devotion to those movies slightly undermined Superman Returns.

So with the past now firmly buried, the Man Of Steel movie picks up the framework and gives it abit of a shake-up. Relationships are made more realistic, feelings of characters explored in a different light, and the science fiction elements pushed into moral areas.

Three parts, all lined up in the beginning of Man Of Steel, sets the template for the viewer that this new.

The very first scene. A daring way to begin, with hallmarks to the some of the later takes on the origins, provides a set-up not only to this story overall but also to multiple plot points.

After that initial scene, we shortly after glimpse what Krypton is like today. And thankfully, not a crystal in sight. Everything from the wardrobe to the architecture to the technology was very organic and felt right for this time and place.

During this segment, we see one bit that made me almost shout out in the theater. Longtime fans who have fond remembrances of the 1980’s and 1990’s will know what I am going on about. This is when I fully realized how much homework was put into Man Of Steel.

These clues that they plucked from the best of the comics was evident to a geek like me, who has read well over one thousand Superman stories, and it was much appreciated. Cobbled together into a seamless story are all these bits and pieces, from all sorts of media.

They take these all ideas and smash in a lot of realism, a trademark of Nolan who acts as producer, and makes the characters live in our world. Never once does Man Of Steel ring false, either with character or story or life.

The one dishearteningly aspect that hit me at the end of credits was how many critics I have read online who completely misrepresented so much of this movie. In fact, several outright lied about what happens on screen. That is dishonest, both intellectually and morally. Shame on them.

Otherwise, my geek heart has been dreaming about this move for almost twenty four hours. DC has to keep this momentum up and give us a Wonder Woman and Flash and a real Green Lantern movie. Then, finally, catch up with Marvel and provide a Justice League film.

The beginning has been set with the world’s greatest hero. Just like it should be.

After a lot of botched attempts they finally got it right! Henry Cavill was terrific as the last son of Krypton and this is the best Superman movie since the early Christopher Reeve films. The star-studded cast was amazing (Crowe, Ladd, Costner) and all were perfectly cast but, for me, it was the villains who stole the show. Michael Shannon was a terrific General Zod and Antje Traue was equally menacing as his Kryptonian sidekick. Within the ingenious plot, there were times that the viewer could emphasize with the villains, whose only crime was their commitment to the survival of their Kryptonian race. Although Jor-El was well intentioned and refused to go against the laws of Krypton, it was General Zod who dared to question their decision to stay on the doomed planet and chanced to overthrow them. I have been a fan of the "Man of Steel" since I was a boy and this was one of the better re-telling's of Superman's origin. The film was fast paced and exciting and the effects did not disappoint. The Krypton scenes made you feel like you were on a planet much further advanced than our own. This is the best live action DC comics movie ever! Let's hope they keep up the momentum and kick some Marvel ass! This one would have made Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster proud!

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget the Critics - The Man of Steel Is a Must See!...But You May Want to Skip the Collector's Edition :(
Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2013

**This review covers both the movie and the actual Man of Steel Collector's Edition Bluray Combo Pack. If you are only interested in my review of the actual Man of Steel Collector's Edition Combo Pack and not the movie itself, you can skip to the bottom.**

Personally, I can't stand critics. Screw 'em! If you are a fan of movies, you owe it to yourself to see Man of Steel!

Granted I am a huge fan of Superman, but Man of Steel may very well be the best movie I have ever seen! Considering movies like Nolan's "The Dark Knight", Peter Jackson's third installment in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, "Return of the King" and Whedon's "The Avengers" top that list, that's saying a ton! As you can likely tell, I'm an enormous fan of the action/sci-fi/fantasy genre, so your mileage may vary (meaning if those movies don't strike your fancy, you may want to look elsewhere).

What Zack Snyder has done with this film is "genius"! This is such a grand movie, yet nothing feels forced or exaggerated. Everything is given to you in exactly the right dosage. You aren't force-fed action like in other summer blockbusters. In Man of Steel, the action feels natural as if it is part of a story being told. Imagine that!

The origin story is there, but it isn't too much that it bores you to tears and Snyder goes about it all in precisely the right manner - through flashbacks. This way, you get the gist of how Clark came to be the man he is, without the movie needing to be longer than it has to.

All the actors/actresses do a fantastic job in their particular roles and help the movie to do what it is supposed to do: tell a story. While I'm still adjusting to a fair-haired Amy Adams in the role of Lois Lane, I can say that I left the theater content with her performance. She really grew on me by the time it was all said and done. However, both Michael Shannon as Zod and Russell Crowe as Jor-El were very much spot on for me. I was extremely happy with both performances in their respective roles.

Growing up as a huge Smallville fan, I was convinced that nobody could do the role of Clark justice after Tom Welling. While Brandon Routh fit the role physically in Superman Returns, he was just too stiff and too much of a Christopher Reeves knockoff to leave me satisfied. I'm not saying Reeves was bad in the role (quite the contrary), I just would have preferred it if Routh had brought something he could call his own to the role.

That's where Henry Cavill comes in! The best way I can put his performance is this - he owned the role!

You know how it goes. Often times you've seen an actor or actress cast in an iconic role, only to be dissatisfied with the choice after seeing the movie (or perhaps before and after). With Henry Cavill, I can say this, "Henry Cavill is Superman!"

The whole time while watching the Man of Steel, I felt as if Cavill was truly an outsider from another planet. And, I mean that in the highest regard! Movies are often about the suspension of disbelief and we as moviegoers sometimes need a little push in the right direction. Cavill's performance did that for me. The fact that the guy looks like he trained day and night nonstop, tells you all you need to know about his dedication to the role. Kudos Henry!

The special effects didn't hurt either. As far as cutting-edge special effects go, this movie has it in spades! By far the best special effects I've seen in any movie to date...hands down! Better than Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Matrix, Avatar or any of the Marvel movies, including The Avengers! Words cannot describe them, particularly the Metropolis battle scene! Truly epic!

Speaking of battles, the fight between Supes and two notorious Kryptonians (formerly seen in another of the Big Blue Boyscout's movies) was in essence, borderline orgasmic!

That battle seen alone was worth the price of the movie's admission!...And Man of Steel still had plenty left in reserve.

Let's face it; we don't go to movies about comic book heroes to be bored to death by dialogue. We want action and suspense to go along with a good, relatively fast-paced story. In Man of Steel you get that!

It currently is and will be by summer's end, the biggest and best movie you will see this summer. Mark my words!

Do yourself a favor and don't walk, run faster than a speeding bullet to see this movie! I promise you, you will not leave disappointed! If you do, then you're either dead or worse, a critic! "Gasp!"

As for the actual product itself, the Man of Steel Collector's Edition Combo Pack: I'm going to keep this short and sweet! Unless you are a diehard Superman fan and look to collect all things Superman, do yourself a favor and save your money. This product though somewhat (albeit barely) cool, isn't nearly as wonderful as I had hoped. :(

Yes, it has all the film related media including both 3D and 2D versions of the film; however, the metal "S" glyph is actually a tin container identical to those that used to carry your lunch around as a kid and nothing more. I was expecting something a bit more "solid" and not a "lunch box" made to hold the movie discs, etc.

Had this not been The Man of Steel or had I not been a huge Superman fan, and had I not purchased this product at its cheapest price point offered here on 鶹 (which just so happened to be less than $10 over the cost of the regular combo pack), I would be promptly sending this item back for a refund. There's a snowball's chance in Hell that I'd pay anything above $40 for this and certainly not the $50 plus asking price 鶹 originally had this listed for.

So in summary, keep in mind when purchasing this product that it's nothing more than a "S"-shaped lunch box containing the Bluray materials inside that sit atop a plastic stand. It is NOT as nice as one might expect by looking at the picture alone, that's advertised here.

However, once again, the movie itself is fantastic and highly recommended, but you are probably better off saving your money and simply purchasing the regular Man of Steel Combo Pack.
