    Pour tous ceux qui auraient vu la première version, c’est un grand changement, plus une reconstruction qu’autres choses… nouvelle trame musicale…. certains moments«inutiles» supprimés…certains «footages» retrouvés et ajoutés….. personnellement les deux versions se doivent d’être vues…. mais pour la plupart des gens, ils vont apprécier de travail de moine cinématographique…..!
    Je le recommande, pour amateur du genre et cœur solide…. Le côté historique est aussi très intéressant, décors somptueux et les vêtements, magnifiques….!

    This piece of garbage deserves less than zero stars. It's the worst waste of time, worst thing I've ever watched, read, seen in my entire life. It's not even a real movie- it a jumbled piece of various edits. Picture quality is pathetic. Acting is beyond pathetic, just a lot of yelling, screaming, nonsensical words, and basically cobbled together to try and portray some kind of "storyline". It's ugly, makes no sense, goes all over the place, and then throw in some gratuitous weird scenes like bloody rape, fist/lard anal etc. Made me want to puke. I should have known from the opening "credits", where it tells the story basically as to why what you are about to watch will be nothing like what was intended to be an actual movie. It tells how when everyone from the actors, director, writer, most of those involved had quit and that this so called movie was basically an afterthought of whatever who was left could cobble together and market as an actual movie. I SAW THE ORIGINAL- and it was basically lame. This so called version is 100 times worse. A 10 year old could make a better movie on a cheap hand held kids movie camera.

    I was very disappointed to receive the Caligula DVD on June 6, 2025, as the seller promised English subtitles, but there were none. But I can watch ANY movie only with subtitles - serious health problems. I was forced to return the DVD the next day, June 7, 2025. I got the refund very quickly, but this Caligula DVD I returned on June 7, 2025, is still on "in transit".

    I am a big fan of controversial and disturbing films. This was one that I hadn't heard a lot of detail about. I had heard the name, and was told that if I love disturbing films, this was one to watch. So I ordered it. It wasn't what I had in mind as "disturbing". It was straight up porn. I had no idea until I saw the inside booklet that HUSTLER had financed half of the film. It is a film that showcases the decadence of the early Roman empire (orgies, gorging oneself with food, vomitoriums), with explicit sex scenes every so often. The actual story is very interesting, which is the main reason I watched ALL 3 HOURS of it.

    Diese Rezension bezieht sich auf die spanische Ausgabe, die ungekürzt alle pornographischen Elemente der europäischen Kinofassung enthält.
    Helen Mirren fasste das Filmwerk in einem Interview während der Dreharbeiten am besten zusammen: „Es ist eine unwiderstehliche Mischung aus Kunst und Genitalien.“ Andere Interviewpartner sprechen von einem Versuch, „das antike Rom historisch korrekt darzustellen“, was dem Film so wenig gelungen ist, dass dies wohl nie beabsichtigt war.
    Weder gab es das Konzept des „Prinzen“, noch waren Caligula oder auch sein Onkel Claudius in der Weise verrückt, wie es hier dargestellt wird. Nach den historischen Zeugnissen über Caligula, die ich gelesen habe, war er eher ein zwar gemeiner, aber intelligenter Satiriker. Und zu Claudius gibt es die Studien und den Roman von Robert Ranke-Graves.
    In vielen Bereichen im antiken Rom war Nacktheit alltäglich, und so dient die historische Kulisse als Ausrede dafür, möglichst viel Nacktheit zu zeigen. Dabei Hetero-Porno, schwuler Porno, lesbischer Porno, mehrere Nahaufnahmen von Samenergüssen. Und Blut, viel Blut, viel Grausamkeit und Willkür.
    Die Sets sind groß, opulent, beeindruckend, wie die Kostüme der Darsteller, die welche tragen, was etwas mehr als die Hälfte der Darsteller betrifft. Die Großaufnahmen der Sets finde ich sehr beeindruckend.
    Immerhin zeigt nicht nur Teresa Ann Savoy ihren Biber aus allen Perspektiven, auch Malcolm McDowell hält seinen Spatz full-frontal für eine Weile in die Kamera, und Dame Helen Mirren (damals noch ohne Titel) zeigt kurz ihren Busch. Natürlich keine Nacktheit von Peter O’Toole und John Gielgud. Britische Klassengesellschaft.
    Ich erinnere mich, dass ich den Film mit etwa 18 gesehen hatte, eine deutsche Fassung, die damals auch alle Sexszenen enthielt. Damals konnte ich dem Ganzen nichts abgewinnen, außer einem lahmen Interesse an der Pornographie, die dann durch die Gewaltszenen wieder konterkariert wurde. Damals war mein Eindruck, da hat jemand viel Geld für Popanz ausgegeben, um eine Ausrede zu haben, einen teuren, schlechten, vor allem schlecht ausgeleuchteten und gefilmten Porno zu drehen.
    Die Ausleuchtung könnte sogar ich besser, und das ist ein vernichtendes Urteil. Wenn schöne Mädchen sich gegenseitig Freude bereiten, will ich das auch gut sehen.
    Nun habe ich das ganze Werk erneut goutiert. Zweieinhalb Stunden. Ich war überrascht, wie gut einige der schauspielerischen Leistungen sind, besonders im ersten Drittel. Malcolm McDowell gibt wie gewohnt den Gestörten, kompromisslos und ohne Zurückhaltung, in jungen Jahren mit dem Element des ungezogenen frechen Bengels. Ich hatte erwartet, er würde einfach einen zweiten, dünneren Aufguss von Alex aus Clockwork Orange liefern, aber er spielt Caligula auf ganz andere Weise. Profunder gestört, gemeiner, heftiger.
    John Gielguds Charakter Nerva zieht sich recht früh aus der Filmaffäre zurück durch Selbstmord. Ich wäre nicht überrascht, wenn dies ein Vorschlag von John Gielgud selbst gewesen wäre, nachdem er das Drehbuch gelesen hatte.
    Peter O’Toole ist brillant als Tiberius. Leider hat er keinen charakterlichen Bogen, um sich zu entwickeln, er ist einfach ein gemeiner, kranker alter Mann. Aber mit einer Fiesheit und auch mit einem Gesicht, die mich sehr an Imperator Palpatine erinnern.
    Helen Mirren kommt erst später ins Spiel. Sie ist gewohnt charismatisch und brillant, bekommt aber nicht viel Material, mit dem sie etwas anfangen könnte. Das Konzept ihrer Rolle ist interessant, aber im Skript blöd und flach durchgeführt, und es erscheint mir in einigen Szenen sehr offensichtlich, dass sie nicht versucht, ihre Frustration darüber zu überspielen.
    Die Story, wenn man sie als solche bezeichnen will? Caligula wird Kaiser, dreht dann immer mehr durch und tut immer krassere Dinge. Irgendwann haben die Römer genug und ermorden ihn.
    Und der Porno-Aspekt? Größtenteils lahm, uninteressant, schlecht ausgeleuchtet, schlecht gefilmt, unmotiviert. Viele Halb-Erektionen, was eine Reflektion der Energie in diesen Szenen ist. Jenna Jameson hat Pornos mit guten Sexszenen und interessanter Handlung gedreht, wirklich intelligente Filme mit Voll-Erektionen.
    Den Film als Ganzes finde ich faszinierend. Wie ein anderer Rezensent schrieb, der ganze Wahnsinn dieses Mammutprojektes ist dann schon wieder beeindruckend.
    Für generell Filminteressierte wie mich eine tolle Ergänzung der Sammlung, zum Aufgeilen nicht geeignet. Als Entertainment auch nicht geeignet.

    Bought to see what the film was like without the raunchy bits from the earlier version. This version has a better entertainment story throughout without relying too much on the sex to sell. Knowing the plot from the other film did spoil my enjoyment but if you have never seen it then this one works.
