  Prevents over watering that leads to root rot, dropping leaves, browning leaves and lots of bugs. Only water when it reads dry. Push rod right to the bottom of the pot. This device is cheaper than the plants you own. Also, water from the tray your plant is sitting on. The soil will suck up the water through the drainage holes like a sponge. Prevents bugs from laying eggs in moist soil at the top. Top should be bone dry. That's not where the roots are anyway.
