I work in IT and have had RSI (repetitive strain injury) on and off for years. Numbness in my fingers, numbness and intense pain in the top of my hand, and more recently numbness and intense pain in my upper arm and shoulder from mousing for long periods of time. It got to the point that I was going to need to take medical leave. The pain became so intense that I couldn't even sleep at night.
I was given this mouse to try by an ergonomic specialist. At first I was absolutely frustrated by the lack of precision when it came to selecting and highlighting elements. My thumb also became very sore. I was slow and imprecise. But within a day, I noticed a significant decrease in my shoulder pain. Had it not been for the immediate decrease in shoulder pain, I would have tossed the mouse right out of my cubicle on day one.
Within a few months, my shoulder, hand, and arm pain was completely gone, along with the new thumb pain. (I think my thumb just needed to be conditioned to the new movement.) I also found that I was about 30% faster and more precise in all my mouse movements, which I found really surprising.
The real test was when I had to sit at someone else's desk and use a regular mouse again. Yuck! It was so slow and awkward, and my shoulder pain started coming back within an hour!
I've since outfitted our home computers with these mice and would never go back to a regular mouse. They're compatible with all platforms and the batteries last forever (a year or more under heavy use). They're also perfect for using during a flight, because they remain stationary -- only the ball under your thumb moves.
They're a bit pricey but so worth it for your health. Highly recommend.
Update January 2021: When these went on sale two years ago, I bought a couple extra because I assumed my first one would eventually wear out. Well, it’s now over five years later and I haven’t had to replace the original one yet, despite heavy use. Logitech never disappoints!
