First off lets get the obvious thing out of the way, the damage to the inside of the bottom corners of the hardcover. Bottom front in minor, and the bottom rear is a little more significant. Does not affect the outer cover images, but for a new book just released this should not have occurred. Shows poor quality control on the part of Wizards/Hasbro.
As for the updated rules, there are things I like, things I do not, and things that make me scratch my head and go why. What I do really like is the layout out of the book, everything is clear and concisely organized and easy to find. And as always the artwork is just stellar, hopefully their AI initiative will not ruin that in the near to certain future. A few things, one is it necessary to update to the new rules? I would say probably not, and they indicated that they are placing the updated rules into the common creative license allowing you to have access to them for free. Now the issue there is that on D&D Beyond, with the book released you do not have access to all the rules as they stated within D&D Beyond and I believe they require a subscription for that access. Essentially they are making you pay for the book without buying it in physical or digital form then.
Overall some of the new systems and changes are good offering better options while at the same time not really doing much to improve the game. Basically it is a fresh coat of paint to keep buying into their ecosystem. I am a fan, but am glad I paid below cover price at $46 Canadian instead of the $60 USD price tag they were shipping these books at. Is it worth the buy, that depends on the buyer but I recommend you look into other options that allow you to use the creative commons license to look at the books in full before determining if you want to invest.
Minor damage to cover, and still unsure of rules update.
