  As plastic has changed because of environmental efforts and factory money saving, these are definitely flimsy compared to what I had as a kid in the 70s. No pins provided now (of course) to hold down outer ring. There is a putty provided instead which is useless and actually does NOT stick to paper (yes it was warmed and worked to soften it up). Anyway, with some patience and obvious careful use ( hold the ring down), it still produces fascinating designs.
  The pieces can slip so this would work much better if all the pieces were a couple of millimeters thicker. We still enjoyed toying with it.
