ALC Review - Huge thanks to Meghan Quinn and Good Girls PR for the opportunity to receive a review copy of Bridesmaid by Chance!
猸愶笍猸愶笍猸愶笍猸愶笍.5 - There is something about Meghan Quinn audiobooks - the duet narration, the top tier casting and performance - that brings the delivery of these stories to the next level. I almost exclusively consume MQ in this format, so I don鈥檛 have much to compare to, but I am confident you are missing out on a big part of the experience if you don鈥檛 go the audiobook route because they never disappoint!
The story starts out pretty formulaic for a workplace + marriage of convenience setup and I was concerned I would find FMC Sloane - and her ripe young age of 22 - irritating (don鈥檛 tell her that鈥 鈥榶oung鈥 and 鈥榠mmature鈥 are her trigger words!). I was pleasantly surprised that this did not turn out to be the case. Instead, Sloane actually exhibits significantly more emotional maturity than MMC Hudson who is 13 years her senior.
Hudson is honestly a walking red flag who I would almost certainly hate in any other context (and honestly still kind of did at a lot of points throughout the book - he exhibits some seriously crummy selfish behaviour especially with his contradictory mixed signals). He really does fulfill the stereotypes he is accused of falling into, and while we get a bit of a look at what has brought him to that point and his desire to do better as the book progresses, he definitely still had work to do. But narrated by Jason Clarke? I couldn鈥檛 hate him! In fact, I have an embarrassing number of NSFW bookmarks because THIS MAN 馃槷鈥嶐煉 The spice in this book is no joke - and neither is the edging we experience as the reader when the MCs try to get creative with one another without Hudson fully giving in to his desire to cross that line with Sloane. It will have you hot and bothered (in the best way).
Plot wise, I did find the early portion of the book to be a bit eye roll worthy in terms of how the fake marriage was handled - the man is hugely wealthy but he forces her to sleep in the same bed despite indicating that he can鈥檛 stand her on multiple occasions? Nah. I feel like the 鈥榦nly one bed鈥 vibe would have worked better if it started in the hotel in London where it would make more sense. It didn鈥檛 really add anything prior to that in my opinion鈥
For me, things really took off (pun intended 馃き) starting with the flight to London. Drunk Hudson had me full-on LOLing. The etiquette-turned-kink class was another source of many giggles.
I can鈥檛 end this review without a comment about how much I loathe Sloane鈥檚 brother Jude. The man is an absolute jerk. He is too controlling of his sister(s) - like you got married, you have a life鈥 Get out of their business! And on that note, he鈥檚 married to Hudson鈥檚 sister, yet he has an issue with Hudson being with his sister? Sir, please show yourself out.
