I鈥檓 a little over two months in of daily, commuter use of the Olight RN 400 in the often rainy, Pacific Northwest. It has, for the most part, performed as advertised. The packaging, presentation, and build quality exceeded my expectations, and, for better or for worse as far as the light is concerned, I鈥檝e recently found Olight鈥檚 service to be second to none. I highly recommend this light for anyone that needs a city use bike light.
As soon I got the package in hand, I was immediately impressed by Olight鈥檚 effort to present the light as a premium product. A tight fitting, heavy duty box with magnetic closures; well thought out graphics; heavy duty foam; instructions; and even a thank-you note. I鈥檇 like to say it鈥檚 almost too much given that it鈥檚 just a bike light but there was definitely a sense of care to let customers know they just bought something worthwhile.
The light body is a heavy aluminum, the lens is tightly attached, and overall, the light has a substantial feel to it unlike many alternatives that feel like they鈥檒l break from just jarring them around. The RN 400 feels like it could handle an entire commute of heavy pot holes or off-road terrain with ease. I鈥檇 say the only concern I have is the rubber/silicone flap that seals out the USB-C charging port. It no doubt seals the port up tight but I worry that it will eventually tear as the 鈥榩ull-tab鈥 is a bit thin. So far it鈥檚 not an issue as it doesn鈥檛 require heavy pull to remove the flap.
Installation of the provided mount is easy and solid and the light locks in tight and secure. Though, this security comes with a slight price as adjusting the light while riding is not possible. It鈥檚 pretty much a set it and forget it light mount. I suppose I could loosen the mount a bit but I鈥檇 sacrifice that rock-solid security. Attaching and removing the light from the mount is as easy as it comes.
Won鈥檛 go over the specs here, there鈥檚 plenty provided by Olight and other reviews. What I can say is that the light is a bright 400 lumens and has a great flood to throw ratio for city commuting, even in areas that lack street lamps. Probably not bright enough for deep trail riding but you could likely get by if need be and if riding slow. Having two flash options is a great idea and I鈥檝e found 鈥淔lash 2鈥 to work out really well in daylight traffic commuting. Personally, I haven鈥檛 found a use for the other brightness levels as they seem too dim for any practical use. Perhaps if I were commuting on busier streets where there were more ambient light, the lower settings might prolong battery life. Though, I鈥檇 probably just stick to the brighter flash options in that scenario.
As for battery life, I鈥檝e found that running the light at the 鈥淗igh鈥 400 lumens will definitely run the battery down as fast as advertised. I鈥檓 pretty much recharging each day as my total commute is about 1.25 hours. I can definitely eek out more time and likely push it to recharging every 1.5 days but it seems easier to just throw it on the charger at the end of the day rather than risk riding with no light on my dark, early morning commute.
This leads me to my experience with Olight Customer Service. About a month and a half in of great use and pleasant experience, the light quit charging. Not sure what happened, it just stopped. I finally got around to writing Olight about the issue- just before the Christmas holidays, and, without question, they promptly responded saying they鈥檇 send out a new light. A couple days later, two days after Christmas no less, a new RN 400 arrived at my doorstep. Wow. That is customer service at it鈥檚 best. I didn鈥檛 even expect to hear from them until the new year.
I highly recommend this light and when funds permit, I will gladly purchase the RN 1200 for a main light (to be run at medium 600 lm output for longer battery life) and run the 400 as a secondary flasher.
