Whether it鈥檚 sculpting an erupting volcano, creating glow in the dark slime or crafting nice smelling bath bombs, our grandchildren, like most kids, love craft kits where they mix up something weird and/or wonderful. This kit for making 鈥渕agic鈥 science potions is ideal, it sounds like it was created specifically with them in mind! Given the toxicity and handling warnings on the back of the package, I鈥檓 happy knowing that our grandchildren鈥檚 parents are all very safety conscious and will be happy to make these potions with the kids; I likely would not have ordered this set had that not been the case. The kit comes with the ingredients to create ten different potions all of which are quite unique and interesting. Each potion is created simply by mixing a series of ingredients together. Once concocted, the containers in which they鈥檝e been formulated can be sealed with the corks accompanying the kit, labelled (again, these are included) and stored in the colourful potions storage box. There are enough magic potion containers to create twenty plus potions in all. The instruction booklet has three additional pages at the end where children can use their imagination to create their own potions by using the leftover ingredients and substituting different colour combinations to come up with their own ideas for potions. In almost every case, the containers used for storage, while quite small, have peculiar appearances befitting a wizard鈥檚 laboratory. Unlike many similar types of kits, with the exception of dish soap, this one comes with everything you will need for the mixing of the potions. Most of the ingredients are common chemicals (sodium bicarbonate, vegetable oil, citric acid, flour, and food colouring) that don鈥檛 pose much risk; the more uncommon ones (zinc sulfide, propenoic acid with polymer) aren鈥檛 overly concerning as long as a bit of care is used. The various props contained within the kit (wizard鈥檚 hat, stirring wand, glitter, mixing cauldron, foil confetti, and such) are cute and work well with the wizarding theme. The instruction book which accompanies the set has simple step by step instructions with diagrams illustrating how to create each magic potion. Those who might like to discuss what is happening in the creation of the various potions, will probably be disappointed in this kit. There is no information on the interactions occurring nor on why the potions behave the way they do. This is unfortunate since, with the high appeal, the activities certainly capture children鈥檚 attention and imagination. It really is a bit of a wasted opportunity to teach a few science concepts. This kit is visually striking and the mixing of potions intriguing. While it does require adult supervision, it is well worth the time and effort involved. This kit has captured the imagination of my granddaughters, not an easy feat; it really is well designed and executed. Recommended.
