I had developed some unusual joint pain and weakness last year so if that ever returns I wanted to have a simple top opener that didn't take up much space in the kitchen drawer, and this one being all metal it is also going to be easy to clean.
Also I intentionally ordered this model because it is small enough to grip the lenses on action cameras, as odd as that might seem. Action cameras now have a large variety of optional lenses and filters but many of them require removing the factory lens and on a few types, they are screwed in so tightly at the factory. I am not the first user to be stymied by how to get those off without damaging anything.
This opener is an ideal size for that task. I like the simple ratchet mechanism and the serrated teeth; plus everything is in sight instead of hidden by plastic.
Unfortunately in the course of squeezing on the lever, it suddenly felt like something came loose but not in a good way. Thankfully it wasn't the camera. It was the top of the opener had separated because one of the junctions from the stamped steel to the rod had loosened and slid the whole works out of position. The ratchet lever was no longer reaching the little teeth on the opposite rail.
I shoved the thing back into alignment and got the lens turned off as quickly as I could but I could feel the opener giving way right from the start.
I can tweak my opener a number of ways instead of returning it but for the future, maybe these could be finished at the factory with more pressure to make those crimps and put in deeper grooves on the rods, or braze those two junctions.
When it's working I like its minimalist design. Needs a tweak to its construction.
