Beaton’s ability to capture so much personality in her artwork while carrying forward a devastating and haunting narrative is remarkable. This book is truly a masterpiece on so many levels. It could serve as a Masterclass on empathy building. It is hard to describe, but I believe this book could have the power to show the less empathetic of the world the kind of lessons they need in order to better understand humanity. There’s so much to impact in this book, but it is never a drag, never less than terrifying, fascinating and ultimately heartbreaking yet beautiful. A serious tour de force. I could see this getting shortlisted for the Giller Prize.
