****Updating July 2017 - Just wanted to point out that I LOVE this whetstone, and still has a lot of life left even after two years of sharpening all of my kitchen knives (and also my plethora of scissors and blades). This is an excellent whetstone for home use. I try to use it all around the top so it wears evenly, and so far there's only a very small divet in the centre of the brown side, which I will have to try sanding flat.

I soak mine for at least a full 24 hours before I use it (although usually more like 1.5 -2 days as I'll try to put it to soak like a Thursday night so I can sharpen my knives on the weekend). I have been trying to encourage various other family members from the different households to get this, since now it's become the case where everyone brings their knives over to my house for me to do it! Will be purchasing these for Christmas gifts this year ;)

    Great combination whetstone with stand.

I was having a hard time trying to find a professional sharpening service for Japanese knives - I am slowly growing my collection of Shun knives, and my oldest one needed to be sharpened. I decided I should learn since I am investing so much money in a great set of kitchen knives.

I bought this combination stone along with an angle guide for Japanese blades, and started practicing on my old cheapo knives I've kept in my basement kitchen. After awhile of practicing, I have finally gotten used to the correct angles and how to hold and move the knife across the stone.

This combination stone is great. The size is good for most any kitchen knives - I've since used it also to sharpen kitchen scissors and a couple of foldable utility knives. The stone is a consistent texture - the 1000 grit was great to sharpen up the edges on my knives to a razor sharp, smooth finish, and the 6000 grit basically polishes the edge, from what I could tell- bringing my knives into a mirror-like, incredibly sharp edge. The stand has rubber feet on the bottom so it holds onto the countertop well - very useful as it is a rather messy job.

I believe basic instructions are included in the box, however it is all in Japanese. I just googled whetstone sharpening and watched a few youtube vids to see how it was done and that was enough for me to start.

Shipping and packaging were fine - I do like the clear plastic box that it came in, I've kept it to store the block, stand, and the guide I purchased.

Great quality, and good price. This was cheaper or on par with the few whetstones I could find in retail shops, and this also came with a stand, which is a really nice feature so you dont have to buy separately.
