All of our grandchildren have had magnetic construction sets to play with. Most of these have been ones with triangles, squares, and hexagons where the centres of the figures are hollow; all have been very popular. When I saw these magnetic blocks with their bright colours and solid six sided surfaces (not to mention the Mario Bros theme), I decided that our grandkids would probably really enjoy them. The blocks arrive in a nice gift box with a random scene from a Mario Bros. Game depicted on the front. I’ll mention right off the bat, that the package, with its one hundred blocks, does not contain enough blocks to recreate this scene (in my estimation, such a recreation would require a minimum of three sets). The blocks themselves are visually striking, being brightly coloured and well illustrated with interesting, theme specific graphics. Dependent on what their purpose is, you’ll find that some are identical on all six sides while others are not. Measuring two centimetres in each dimension, the cubes are smaller than I expected but still easy to manipulate, even for smaller hands (although I would never give these to children who are still prone to put objects in their mouths). One thing I really liked was that, unlike other magnetic building sets that our grandchildren have had, these blocks will attach to any side of any block making constructing an object easy. The blocks are quite lightweight with the outer faces being formed of light plastic; I was initially concerned that they might be insufficiently strong for sustained play but, so far, they have proven to be suitably sturdy. The set comes with a short manual which gives some age appropriate ideas of what scenes can actually be built with the blocks included in the set. A drawstring plastic bag is also included to easily store the blocks. With its beautifully illustrated solid sided blocks, this set allows for the construction of scenes that are as impressive looking as those you could produce with more sophisticated sets designed for older children (ie. Lego). They certainly result in a more visually pleasing product than the magnetic shape sets. Of course, even at its current price of $42 CAD (with coupon) this set is quite expensive especially since, to build more sophisticated scenes, additional sets would be required. Compact and easy to work with, these blocks are a lot of fun. Recommended.
