Well, I wanted to place a quick review with an important tid-bit of information everyone looking at this enclosure should know before either purchasing, or throwing it in the garbage for those who already own one and do not like it cause it’s slow.

This Ugreen NvMe ssd enclosure will NOT give you speeds into the 3000 MB/s as is. I mean as it arrives at your door. Placing a blazing fast ssd such as I have (Samsung 990 Pro), is gonna give you about 1000 MB/s. Why? Because Ugreen went on the cheap and only includes a regular usb c cable (actually two of them) that don’t give you the blazing fast speeds. For shame. Somewhat offensive too. All that advertising to buy it for blazing speed and it won’t work properly. Maybe they state this in the micro fine print somewhere.

Anyways, it’s not a difficult fix, but if you want the really fast speeds, we will assume you have a Thunderbolt 4 output on your computer. In my case, it’s a MacBook Pro M2 16 inch. Next, and this is important, you must use a Thunderbolt 4 cable. In my case in the included pictures, I used a OWC Thunderbolt 4 cable. And my advice here is do not buy a no name cable. I have actually purchased no name cables in the past and some companies just outwardly lie about their specifications. Get a brand name, Anker, Ugreen, OWC, Apple. I have also had good experiences with Silkland. But I would stick to the former four brands as they don’t lie about their cable speeds ever.

But once you have your Thunderbolt 4 cable installed between your Thunderbolt 4 computer and this Ugreen device, with a reputable ssd (get a brand name ssd too please), you will get the speeds you likely wanted when you made purchase of this unit. They should be in and around the range of 3000 MB/s for both read and write which is extremely fast for today’s standards. Great for moving large files 10-100 GB in a fraction of the time your regular Samsung T7 or equivalent has done last few years.

As for this product overall; yes very well made. I agree with other reviewers on the pros. It’s a fantastic deal on sale at slightly less than $100 CDN. But, nothing is perfect and as one reviewer pointed out and I did manage to confirm, this model is no longer on the Ugreen website. Why? Could be a number of reasons, including it’s a deeply flawed product. But I don’t know for sure. This seems to work well for me. But I’m of the mind for helping my fellow consumers where I can and knowing such is important.

It looks like these enclosures have gone from nearly nothing available a year ago, to exploding on the market in a short timeframe. I’m guessing this segment will only get bigger and options greater as well.

I’m giving this 4 stars. It’s an excellent product but as you have to purchase a TB 4 cable (if you don’t have an extra), it makes it a purchase with a bit of deceit involved. And a TB 4 cable isn’t cheap, so you should add another $30 bucks to your budget if you want the fast speeds.

Lastly, this unit gets quite hot when moving GB sizes files. I tried moving 40 GB back and forth twice and though I do not take temperature readings, it’s really hot. I think this is why the silicone cover is part of the package, though they claim it’s for drop protection. Right. However, handling the unit when it’s hot is ok as the silicone cover protects your hands well. Maybe this is why this model is no longer sold on the UGreen website. And yes I put some thick silicone gel pad on the drive itself. The design could do with some heatsink fins on the chassis. I mean, it’s pretty much flat aluminum on both sides.

Anyways, as long as it works, I’m good. I don’t like that you have to buy a $30 dollar TB 4 cable, nor the immense heat. But if holds up, it’s a nicely made unit.

I bought second as they were on sale and now run the two in soft Raid 1 configuration through the MacBook disc utility. Which seems to work well and speed loss is minimal this way. If you put files on only one drive, then plug the second in to your laptop, both drives repopulate to the most recent changes.

Recommended.

After getting this UGreen enclosure curiosity got the better of me. I’ve tried SSD enclosures from ACASIS TBU405 and a relatively new piece to the game a Cable Matters enclosure. Using the same Samsung 990 PRO SSD memory (2280 size), neither of these latter two cases get half as hot when under heavy use. I’ve learned in the last month, there are really several factors that contribute to heat management. They include the enclosure and how it’s built to manage heat, what chip sets the enclosure use and the memory brand/model. In concert with the SSD memory, some of the memory sticks use greater voltages at idle but especially under high load. If mismatched one could run into disconnecting issues. The enclosures and your usb ports both have to supply enough juice. Most do, but some SSD’s need extra juice/voltage. My conclusion is, since this UGreen model literally gets too hot to handle in your hands (though the silicone cover helps), the Cable Matters and ACASIS both do not do this. Warm, yes they get warm under load. But never too hot to handle. They are MUCH easier to handle while using the Samsung 990 Pro in all of them. Same TB 4 cables used on UGreen and ACASIS.

The UGreen in my opinion is the best built, feels best quality. But due to its lousy heat management compared to the other two, I can’t recommend the UGreen over the Cable Matters or ACASIS models. Shame, as I like UGreen products allot. But I can’t in all good conscience not mention my experience and important information. If ya have $100-150 to spend on one of these Cable Matters or ACASIS (using Samsung 990 Pro). Though, you may have luck with another brand SSD like Western Digital, Crucial, Corsair or Lexar. All have great reviews, but not everyone is sticking them into enclosures like us.

However, handling the unit when it’s hot is ok as the silicone cover protects your hands well. Maybe this is why this model is no longer sold on the UGreen website. And yes I put some thick silicone gel pad on the drive itself. The design could do with some heatsink fins on the chassis. I mean, it’s pretty much flat aluminum on both sides.

Anyways, as long as it works, I’m good. I don’t like that you have to buy a $30 dollar TB 4 cable, nor the immense heat. But if holds up, it’s a nicely made unit.

I bought second as they were on sale and now run the two in soft Raid 1 configuration through the MacBook disc utility. Which seems to work well and speed loss is minimal this way. If you put files on only one drive, then plug the second in to your laptop, both drives repopulate to the most recent changes.

After getting this UGreen enclosure curiosity got the better of me. I’ve tried SSD enclosures from ACASIS TBU405 and a relatively new piece to the game a Cable Matters enclosure. Using the same Samsung 990 PRO SSD memory (2280 size), neither of these latter two cases get half as hot when under heavy use. I’ve learned in the last month, there are really several factors that contribute to heat management. They include the enclosure and how it’s built to manage heat, what chip sets the enclosure use and the memory brand/model. In concert with the SSD memory, some of the memory sticks use greater voltages at idle but especially under high load. If mismatched one could run into disconnecting issues. The enclosures and your usb ports both have to supply enough juice. Most do, but some SSD’s need extra juice/voltage. My conclusion is, since this UGreen model literally gets too hot to handle in your hands (though the silicone cover helps), the Cable Matters and ACASIS both do not do this. Warm, yes they get warm under load. But never too hot to handle. They are MUCH easier to handle while using the Samsung 990 Pro in all of them. Same TB 4 cables used on UGreen and ACASIS.

The UGreen in my opinion is the best built, feels best quality. But due to its lousy heat management compared to the other two, I can’t recommend the UGreen over the Cable Matters or ACASIS models. Shame, as I like UGreen products allot. But I can’t in all good conscience not mention my experience and important information. If ya have $100-150 to spend on one of these Cable Matters or ACASIS (using Samsung 990 Pro). Though, you may have luck with another brand SSD like Western Digital, Crucial, Corsair or Lexar. All have great reviews, but not everyone is sticking them into enclosures like us.

As you knew that I ordered once of this product but got something else in the box. I returned it immediately and purchased another one. I just received the new ordered device tonight. On my first sight, it looked great and seemed a very high quality product. I was dying to install my new Samsung V-Nand SSD 990 Pro 2TB, one of top and fastest SSD on the market, on it. It fits the specification of the enclosure. Here are the conclusion about this test:

1. I have HP Envy 11th Gen Intel i7-11800H 2.30GHz laptop, which had never reorganized the new SSD enclosure at beginning. I spent 3 hours researching that I found the SSD enclosure created a Storage Pool in Windows 11. It was occupied so the Disk Manager never showed it up. Not sure why and how this happened. I deleted the Storage Pool, it showed up on the Disk Manager.

2. I used EasePartition app to format and partition it, it always failed with an unclear error message. Eventually I had a good try using Disk Manager and started to test use it.

3. It does backward support USB3.1. but never worked with Thunderbolt 3, not to say version 4. The computer does not even recognized it when plugged in through TB3 port.

4. When connected through USB3.1, I was transferring 70GB video files to the SSD. The start speed was okay about 250mb/s to 330mb/s, but dropped to 20mb/s after half of loads. It was so disappointed. Stayed at 20mb/s for about 10 mins then speed up again but up to 250mb/s. Very unstable and very disappointed.

It seems working with USB3 but unstable, still dead with Thunderbolt 3. For this price, it is unacceptable. Our mission critical data transfer cannot rely on such an unreliable enclosure like this. It seem to me that his device and its system design has flaws for sure! I am returning it again and buying a better one.

Not recommended at all!

It is very weird experience. I bought "UGREEN 40Gbps M.2 NVMe Enclosure, USB4 NVMe SSD Enclosure with Cooling Fan, Aluminum", it came in with a nice box and package. When I opened, I am completed shocked and laughing. The box is about product, the manual is about the product, however, the item is not the device I purchase. Someone putting another unrelated device (something Orico) in the product box. Unbelievable and wasting my time and efforts. :(

I paired this with a value 4TB NVME 4th gento replace/supplement the 256GB SSD in my Mac Mini M4 using Thunderbolt 4. I had my doubts as to whether it would make much of a difference and whether it was worth the effort to set it up as the primary boot disk, but its over 3x faster than the internal SSD, and the price is very good. The build quality is very good, it feels sturdy and came with a thick, solid feeling cable, and given that the 2 TB upgrade from Apple is a $1200 option, I highly recommend it, if you don't mind a drive hanging off the back of your Mac Mini.

Ich habe lange mit mir gerungen, bevor ich das Case von Ugreen bestellt habe. Zu schlecht waren meine bisherigen Erfahrungen mit 40 Gbps-Cases anderer Hersteller. Umso größer war die Freude als ich es dann nach dem Auspacken und dem Einbau der SSD dann an meinem MacBook in Betrieb nehmen konnte...

Dabei ist das, was man nicht bzw. so gut wie nicht hört, die allergrößte Überraschung und für sich genommen bereits Entschädigung für den durchaus nicht kleinen Preis: Der Lüfter im Gehäuse ist wirklich sehr leise. Die nächste Überraschung kommt bei der Performance-Messung - hier überzeugt das Case dann endgültig. Es holt aus meiner Crucial das bei 40 Gbps praktisch zu erwartende Maximum heraus und damit hat sich dann meine Investition endgültig ausgezahlt - endlich eine wirklich schnelle externe SSD.

Die Verarbeitung des Metallgehäuses ist makellos. Der beigefügte Kühlkörper und das Wärmeleitpad sind ebenfalls brauchbar und dank der Tatsache, dass dieses Gehäuse (mit einer Schraube, Schraubendreher liegt bei) verschraubt wird, ist direkte eine Kontaktfläche zwischen Kühlkörper und Gehäuse gewährleistet und damit die bestmögliche, durch den integrierten Lüfter unterstützte, Wärmeableitung. Der (abnehmbare) Gummi-Bumper schützt das Gehäuse beim Transport vor allzu harten Stößen - ist aber im Grunde mehr Designmerkmal als wirklich notwendig - SSDs sind unempfindlich gegenüber Erschütterungen.

Ein Punkt, der vielleicht dann doch erwähnenswert ist, ist die Hitzeentwicklung. Im Betrieb wird das Gehäuse warm. Die SSD selbst bleibt allerdings im operablen Bereich und überhitzt nicht. Für mich ein indiz, das Wärmeableitung und Wärmeausleitung funktionieren. Materialbedingt ist das Gehäuse - nebenbei bemerkt - etwas schwerer als andere Gehäuse. Insgesamt ein rundum gelungenes Produkt - deshalb auch kaum der Rede wert, das es auch in einer ansprechenden Verpackung daher kommt, die positiv durch wenig Plastik auffällt.

Noch ein Rat: Das Case ist fast immer in irgendeiner Rabattaktion zu haben - selten wird der volle Listenpreis von zur Zeit rund 130 EUR fällig. Ich habe am Ende 89 EUR bezahlt. 89 EUR sind zwar auch kein Pappenstiel - aber für Verarbeitung und Performance aus meiner Sicht angemessen.

Soy una persona que usa discos SSD para guardar los trabajos y son archivos de video en 4K- 8K y muchas fotografías por lo que necesito ligereza a la hora de manejar los archivos de un sitio a otro o para montar en los mismos discos directamente en bruto, sin pasar por el Mac. Así que por este motivo me sale mas rentable comprar los NVMe y carcasas de este estilonque los discos SSD ya montados y que suelen ser mas caros y a la vez mas lentos.

UGREEN ha hecho un gran trabajo con esta carcasa, desde que la sacamos de su caja ya vemos que se trata de un producto de calidad.

Todo esta heco en aluminio, cosa que ayuda muchísimo a la disipación de calor, calor que he de decir que es muy poco para tratarse de una refrigeración pasiva, pensé que se iba a calentar más, pero no pasa más allá de los 35º-40º en uso intensivo y ya os digo, solo es pasiva, no lleva ventilador ninguno por lo que no has de preocuparte por el ruido.

La instalación de disco es sencilla a mas no poder, os he dejado fotos de como se hace, básicamente se reduce a quitar un tornillo, abrir la tapa, meter el NVMe, poner el transmisor de calor (acuérdate de quitar ambos plásticos), volver a poner la tapa y atornillar. Listo, ya lo tienes para ser usado en tu maquina.

Para que veras la velocidad que se puede alcanzar, os he dejado unas capturas de pantalla de prueba de velocidad hechas con Speed Test De Blackmagic, una esta hecha sobre el disco de mi propio MacBook y la otra sobre un NVMe Crucial P5 conectado a esta carcasa usando un cable Thunderbolt 5 (te vale el que trae en la caja o un Thunderbolt 4). Como podeís apreciar la velocidad del MacBook es superior, pero todo dependerá del NVMe que tu pongas en la caja, hasta un limite que es el de los 40Gbps.

✅ Además es más económico que otros, incluso sin aplicar el cupón del 30% con el que lo compré.

EDITO: Tras comprar una segunda unidad, al ir a poner el SSD me he encontrado con que si lleva ventilación forzada, es decir, lleva un pequeño ventilador como podeis ver en las fotos nuevas que he subido y donde marco donde se encuentra este.
Aun así, esta silencioso, tanto que apenas se oye cuando se enciende, salvo que lo haga al máximo y tampoco es una cosa que moleste. Tengo otras carcasas de marcas muy conocidas y que podeis encontrar aquí en �鶹��, que que cuando se enciende el ventilador parece un reactor, no es el caso de estas carcas de UGREEN. Sigo manteniendo la misma opinión de ellas.

Sin duda, una compra 💯 recomendada.
