I don't give many 5 star reviews because, like my grade 5 english teacher always said: "There's always room for improvement David". I really disliked that man. My name is Dave. All kidding aside, the Thermacell has been around for a few years. Full disclosure: I've owned one of the butane powered Thermacells for 3 years. The most common question I get is: "Do they work? Do they actually keep mosquitoes at bay?". The answer is: "Yes, and yes". They are virtually odor free, and according to the EPA, reasonably safe unless you're a fish. I actually read then entire EPA report on this this mosquito repellant device. Like anything, it comes with some risks, but they seem minimal. The active ingredient is metofluthrin. It does not appear to be harmful to humans or pets. It is extremely toxic to fish so it is important not to throw your Thermacell into the lake or river. The advantage to this unit over it's butane powered cousin is cost. The butane cartridges are pricy, and I have a nasty habit of leaving it on all night long after to too many campfire cocktails thereby wasting the entire container of butane along with half my bank account. This unit is rechargeable. A full charge is supposed to last 9 hours if you leave the light off (5 with it on). I ran it for about 7 hours on the first night right out of the box and it seemed to have more in the tank, so to speak. It take about 10-15 minutes to really warm up and get working. It's kind of like how you feel when you get up in the morning before you've had coffee. Be patient. I would say after about 15 mins we noticed an 85-90% decrease in the number of mosquitos. It's not perfect, but it's pretty close to it. It is purported to have a 20 foot radius of protection. This will obviously vary with how breezy it is outside but I can tell you it fully protected my backyard deck and all the people on it. The refill cartridges are expensive for sure but without the added cost of the butane refills in the end it will save you money. I'll still keep my butane model for camping because I don't always have electricity and the ability to recharge, but for home use, this is the cat's pajamas. I like it. I think you will as well.
