So dimensions are limited, jacks must be on the rear and all controls on top, black or gray so it doesn't attract a thief, and inexpensive to replace in case it gets stolen. I ordered the MusiBaby M71 after not being fully satisfied with the Maofaec S1 Pro. My disappointment with the latter is lack of low bass and mechanical resonance on strong soprano vocals. In a car, one needs moderately loud volume from the speakers to overcome ambient noise, especially with wide dynamic range sources such as classical music and acoustical instruments.

First reaction to the M71 was that it sounded much warmer but that was soon replaced by the negative effect of even worse mechanical resonances at even lower frequencies and at lower volume. I wonder if a fundamental difference is the grill - the M71's is flat and smack up against the baffle which might result in rattling contact. The S1's bulges out from the baffle with a diamond pattern stamped into it and it is common to see rounded bulges on Anker Soundcores et al. However, it could instead be electronic distortion. As I attempted to A-B the two speakers via both the Aux inputs and BlueTooth, I grew more uncomfortable with the M71. "Warmer" felt more "woofy", highs seemed diminished and murkier.

So I did a crude test using Audacity to generate a swept sine wave from 40Hz-8kHz over 20 seconds, fed to the Aux input, recorded back to Audacity via a pencil condenser microphone, and analysed the recorded tone using Audacity's waveform and spectrogram displays (see image). The M71 is the lower pair. The left end of the onset of recording is at 40Hz (all we see is room noise) and the right end is 8kHz. The ramping straight lines show the frequency of the detected tones output from the speaker while colour represents their intensity (blue weak ---> white strong). The vertical red lines in the waveform envelopes are the 0dB reference points after normalizing each recording ( 280Hz for the M71, 1.73kHz for the S1).

That warmer/woofy sound of the M71 is apparent from the boost it has in the 200-300Hz range but it actually does not have as strong a bottom as the S1. A 60 Hz tone makes it through the latter (albeit diminished) but there's nothing from the M71.

Looking at the spectrogram, the weaker ramping lines represent harmonic distortion above the test tone's fundamental frequency. In the middle of the M71's spectrogram, there are clusters where they become more intense, like a stack, the strongest around 600 and 850Hz. There is nothing as obvious in the S1's but there is a faint, continuous vertical line to the right of centre (about 1kHz) that could indicate the onset of mechanical resonance which I doubt would be harmonic.

Of course, this test setup is not lab quality: it's not a calibrated microphone nor an anechoic room so the shape of the envelope display is influenced by the microphone's frequency response and room modes. Nevertheless, it can detect differences when comparing the performance of devices being tested under identical conditions. In this case, it corroborates my subjective impression that the S1 was cleaner and better balanced across the spectrum than the M71 quite apart from the latter's more serious issue with mechanical resonance.

Radio
I thought this was quite neat for someone who listened to one favourite station around the house but would not be of value for my primary use case - in the car. At low volume, it was quite pleasant to listen to. I could go on about how I would set it up but the feature suffers fatally from coming on at full volume when the Radio mode is selected after the speaker is turned on. That blast had me punching buttons every time it happened. Surely the gain setting could have been stored in non-volatile RAM just as pairing data has to be for BlueTooth.

I am totally impressed with this little external speaker. I bought this mainly because my truck's radio doesn't have an Aux-In jack and I needed to make a cross country trip. I hate having to search for a new radio station every 10 miles.

So, I have an older Sirius XM receiver that I can move from vehicle to vehicle. I used the Aux-Out of the XM to the Aux-In of the speaker. The battery life is unbelievable.

The only thing I do not care for is the volume loudness when you go to the FM mode. For whatever reason, radio mode starts off REALLY LOUD.

I own many speakers and this one is the worst. I have a Cambridge Sound Works OontZ Angle Ultra about the same size. Agree that it is more expensive but the sound is superior over this one and worth the extra money. I bought it because I need one with FM radio and micro SD card.

Cons:
-Volume is low, no bass, too much treble. Frequency response curve is too bad. Sound quality is just above a mobile phone a bit.
-Loud announcement (and long) when switch mode (bluetooth, music, radio) and the volume VERY LOUD after switching to radio mode even if user already lowers volume before switching. You cannot use this speaker at night unless you want your partner kills you. This is designed by people that never use speakers themselve!

Pros:
-Connect to Ubuntu right away when power on without hassle, unlike the Cambridge Sound Works. Connection is consistent.
-Battery is ok, last whole working day with FM radio
-FM works quite well. Even without the USB cable attached (used as an antenna), it still can tune to some stations and the sound without any static.

Conclusion:

If you just want to use it as a FM radio it may suit you. But why don't you purchase FM radio instead? It is easier to tune and select station right?

It definitely not worth the money. I don't mind spending a bit more for the sound quality. I would avoid the brand altogether, not just this model, it is because one of the 5 stars reviews says this model M71 has much better sound quality than the other model M68 (same price)!!! OMG, i can't even imagine how bad that M68 is. Now I read again those 5 starts review I keep laughing. Mostly likely, the reasons for those 5 stars reviews are:

1) bought by seller
2) the reviewers never own a speaker
3) their ears must be examined by doctors

or combinations of them :D

Arrived late July but damaged by late September, so much for portability!
This was bought to replace similar speakers of similar design that must have the same design flaw. The cable some how damages the small plastic hole where the cable hooks in. The component ends up falling into the speaker making it a blue tooth speaker only.
Unfortunately for me, the MP3 that I have used has not outlasted half a dozen speakers but as it doesn't have blue tooth I am now going to replace my mp3 player so that I can listen to my music on the go. Will have a couple of blue tooth speakers to go with it I guess!
I guess you get what you pay for as I suspect all low-to-mid price speakers will have this flaw.
If you are not planning to move the speakers around, you will probably not have this problem. Was hoping to get a little more than a few months out of them, but oh well.

I got the M68 speaker for Christmas and liked it a lot. Just purchased this M71 to compare them. The M71 has superior sound quality to the M68 which can be painful on the ears at mid to high volume due to very high "highs" / treble.
It took a several attempts for me to get my phone to connect via BlueTooth to the M71 for some reason. I think it was my phone because of the multiple things I connect it to. It connected immediately to other devices.
The sound was so good listening to "Steady Me" (featuring Karen Gillespie) by KXC, that I got goosebumps!
The radio picked up quite a few stations at my house (in the hills) which was surprising because the M68 didn't pick up a single station sitting in the same spot.
The downside is that the M71 isn't waterproof, and it's probably not as safe to take in dirty / dusty / damp places as the M68. It also doesn't port quite as easily as the M68 which sits neatly in my cupholder of my truck. Also, you can push the bass too hard. The sound is great, but if you max out the volume, you'll hear some distortion in the speakers. It's not terrible, but I'd be cautious about maxing it out in some situations.
If you want ultimate portability and reliability in less than ideal conditions for electronics, go with the M68. If superior sound quality is what you want, the M71 is definitely the way to go. Great product for the price.
