I like this product line. No matter which GEN model you choose, you get the same features and they all work exactly like the others. The only differences are the charging current and how many charging banks are included. That's it. There is nothing confusing about it, and you don't need to splash out for a bigger model than you need just because you might want the option to charge lithium batteries or foresee needing or wanting a repair mode. If you're like me, over the last year due to the pandemic none of my vehicles have been getting much use and when they're not getting used the battery is draining and degrading - a battery maintenance system to ensure your batteries are good to go when you need them is practically essential now. If you've got an RV and/or boat, these are the chargers you should be looking at. These "GEN" chargers are primarily meant for onboard use, meaning to be installed directly in vehicles or other points of use and left always connected to the battery circuit. In practice, there is very little to stop you from using these as standard multipurpose chargers provided you can connect the charging leads to the batteries you want to maintain. Having an always connected battery maintainer makes keeping your batteries topped up and healthy between uses practical and convenient needing only to be plugged into household power and no messing around with the battery terminals at all. These are FULLY waterproof as opposed to just water resistant. Even if you're using it to charge a terrestrial vehicle which is stored outdoors, this is a big benefit. The chargers are built like tanks and you're definitely getting quality hardware for the money. To utilize these onboard chargers on spare/loose batteries not installed in a vehicle where the eyelet termination isn't feasible to use, you can purchase Noco X-Connect leads for the alligator clips (which are included with their multipurpose chargers, you won't be able to use any part of it but the clips), or even some generic alligator clips, and simply screw the alligator clips to the eyelet. There is a caveat to trying to make use of these if retrofitting from their multipurpose line in that the eyelets on these GEN chargers are much larger than the ones on the multipurpose ones and the alligator clips while still usable don't fit as well as they could but I can verify it still works perfectly (see my photos). I realize that these are purpose built for permanent installation but quick disconnect cables like the multipurpose line certainly wouldn't hurt to have here for the sake of flexibility even if they were separate purchases. The main downside over the multipurpose models, apart from not including alligator clips in the box for ad-hoc connections is that they support fewer battery voltages than some of the multipurpose models. This in itself is not so much a problem if you don't have any 6V (or 24V) batteries you need to maintain but something to keep in mind. For the vast majority of common battery types a homeowner needs to maintain though they are covered as 12V is the most common type by far and they DO support 12V lithium batteries. This new line of chargers are way smaller, have higher charging currents, and are just generally made better than the old models. I've been exclusively using noco genius models for charging all of my batteries (automotive and UPS mainly) for years and years and I have never had an issue with a single one of them. Many years ago I tried CTEK but it didn't last, and was never clear about what it was up to. The status indicators on these chargers is easy to figure out, you know exactly what it's doing, if there are errors (bad battery, you hooked it up incorrectly), what the charge state is for each battery bank, etc. just glancing at it. I personally suggest the 5A models are probably more than enough for most people. Yes, it takes significantly longer for the 5A models to charge even just partially depleted moderately sized batteries but the point here is that you can easily leave it connected all the time so you're not actually waiting for it to finish charging so you can disconnect it - nothing is "loose for the taking" this way. If you're going to use a spare charging bank for off-vehicle charging occasionally, then you may want to go all the way up to the 10 amp models. You can't go wrong here... if you need a battery charging or maintenance system, you'll be satisfied with whichever of these GEN models you choose most appropriate to your need.
