What is propylene glycol?
Propylene glycol is a clear, syrupy synthetic liquid, with no color, odor, or taste that is completely soluble in water. Because it helps the skin absorb moisture, it is commonly used as an emulsifier, for skin hydration, and as a stabilizer.
Additional and indirect applications include animal feeds, ketosis, fragrances, emulsifiers, evaporation preventers, dispersants, polyurethane, paints and inks, adhesives, etc.
Propylene Glycol USP is used as a non-active ingredient in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical products. It is also used as a humectant and emulsifier in the production of food, personal hygiene products, and liquid detergents. Products commonly containing Propylene Glycol as an ingredient include flavoring extracts, ice cream, soda, bread, salad dressings, deodorants, humidor solutions, topical products, non-toxic antifreeze solution, soaps, toothpaste, cosmetics, perfumes, fog fluids, and many more. The USP grade is produced according to the highest industry standards and tested for compliance with specifications of United States Pharmacopeia. The specified purity is more than 99.8%. Propylene Glycol is often commonly abbreviated as PG-USP.

Propylene glycol is used as a moisturizer and a drug solubilizer in topical, oral, and injectable medications as it’s harmless to the human body. It can be included in medicines, artificial tears, mouthwash, toothpaste, and vitamins. Propylene glycol can be used in skin care products such as serums, body oil, lotions, moisturizers, sunscreens, soaps, skin cleansers, shampoos, hair care, and even hand sanitizers. In soap making, the addition of propylene glycol can fix the discolored brown hue caused by excessive evaporation. It is an efficient, unscented solvent and pigment, so it is great for DIY cosmetics.

Propylene glycol has a low freezing point, so it works as an antifreeze for winterizing plumbing systems and a de-icing fluid for aircrafts. It has no negative effects on human health, so it is a safe alternative to traditional antifreezes and de-icing compounds. It is commonly used in theaters for thermal fog machines. Due to its slower evaporation rate compared to water, it is also used in water-based acrylic architectural paints to extend dry time.
