I was hesitant not really being familiar with the brand but figured I'd give it a try. Exceeded my expectations! My turntable has a built in phono stage but this definitely makes a difference. I am not sure how it would compare to a high end unit but for a turntable I paid less than $300 for I don't see the point in spending more money. I like that it has an adjustable gain that let's you dial in as needed depending on the volume or the record. I don't have the unit grounded but have not noticed any unwanted noise. No hesitation recommending this!

The positive:
- Compared to Schiit and Pro-Ject, this is a fairly affordable phono pre amp.
- If you're upgrading from a cheap pre-amp like something from Pyle, you will DEFINITELY notice a huge increase in sound quality. Records sound crisper, better bass response, more lively sound (I keep mine at 39dB).
- The Gain dB selector switch is a nice touch.

The negative:
- While the tubes are a nice touch, they are a bit on the cheaper side, probably wouldn't hurt to swap these. The Tube sockets are a little on the cheaper side as well. I have experience with tube amps / pre-amps and these made me cringe a little. Be very careful when inserting the tubes. Some of the pins have a tendency to want to wedge itself between the plastic housing and the metal pin socket's outer shell.
- Just an FYI, there's a nasty *POP* when you turn this thing on. Maybe turn it on before your amplifier / speakers.

Overall, I'm happy with this and it's a definite increase in quality over a thin-sounding bare-minimum phono-preamp. Worth the price, I just wish a few things were better quality on this thing.

For many years, I was dissatisfied with the sound I was getting out of my 1989 Rega turntable. In 2019, I started looking for ways to make it sound better. Changing the cartridge and platter mat brought improvements (better reproduction of upper frequencies, greater detail). However, I still wasn’t getting the same enjoyment from vinyl playback that I was getting from CD playback (after discovering the benefits of power conditioning with that format).

Well… as of the spring of 2023, the tables have turned (no pun intended). The Fosi X2 is (for now, anyway) the final piece in my analog playback puzzle. Soundstage and detail are appreciably better than I have been getting using the phono stages in my late ‘70s - early ‘80s receivers. Honestly, I can’t imagine how my LP listening experience could be any better than it is now.

The stock 6A2 tubes really are quite fine. I don’t hear a significant difference between them and any of the others I’ve tried to date (5654, 6AK5, 5749, 6BA6, EF94, 5725). Other tubes may be ever-so-slighty “brighter” or “airier”, but the differences are very subtle (if present at all). However, if you can’t resist experimenting, the following are some you might try (Chinese tube designation and US/European equivalents):

6A2 (stock): 5750, 6BE6, EK90
6J1: 5654, 6AK5
6J2: 5725, 6AS6
6J3: 6AG5, EF96
6J4: 6AU6, EF94
6J5: 6AH6, 6AH6WA
6K4: 5749, 6BA6, EF93

If you do swap tubes, be careful, as the pin sockets are initially quite tight (they will loosen up in time). Another note: my experience has been that the first gain setting (39dB) is sufficient for most recordings. It seems to yield the same output as the phono stages in my receivers.

I’ve had this preamp for over a year now. I’m still beyond happy with its performance. If anything, it sounds even better now than it did new. I upgraded the tubes to the GE ones some previous reviewers mentioned. It sounds much more detailed and punchier than the phono stage built into my CA AXR100 integrated amplifier.

There seems to be no point of ever spending another dime on a “fancier” unit considering how high this one punches above its weight and price point.

I’m running this with the aforementioned amp and a Technics SL 2000 outfitted with an AT-VMN40ML. It sounds brilliant.

Great build quality though the tubes need a bit of care and effort to place them properly. This preamp has been a revelation in all senses. Played some of the best sounding LPs in my collection, Alan Parson iRobot MFSL and few other steely dan albums. The low end has improved significantly, great mid range and normal highs. Might try out new tubes at some point but totally satisfied currently.
