Basic Working Principle:

  • (1) Using IO port TRIG trigger measuring distance, high level for at least 10uS.
  • (2) Module automatically sends eight 40kHz square , automatically detects whether there is return .
  • (3) When there is return , through IO port ECHO output a high level, the duration of the high level is the time of ultrasonic from sending to returning.Test distance = (high level time * sound velocity (340m/S))/2;
  • This module is simple to use, a port sends a high level of more than 10uS, then wait for high level output at receive port. Timer was enabled once there is output, and read time when this port becomes low level, which is the time of this measurement. Use the time to calculate distance. Constantly cycle measurement can reach your mobile measuring values.
  • The ultrasonic timing diagram shows that you only need to provide a more than 10uS pulse trigger , the module inside will send eight 40kHz cycle level and detect return . Output echo once detect return . The pulse width of echo is proportional to the measured distance.Thus calculate the distance with interval between sending and receiving echo .

    These AJ-SR04M distance measuring units are very easy to use with an Arduino or any board with a couple of PIO pins. It is a matter of timing the echo and calculating the distance.

    The schematic for the unit is available so modifications and hacking are possible. I extracted the ultrasonic signals for use underwater with good success. The transducer was totally waterproof for my experiments.

    Great little units at a reasonable price.

    Not very fond of serial for having a longer latency and limited bandwith. I would suggest to have a variant of this ultrasonic distance but in I2C or SPI, at least you would have much more faster response and you can put much more device and using less port.
    But that being said, I just follow the youtube tutorial to make it works.
