I purchased two different Carson microscopes this one and another magnifying from 100X to 250X. Considering their VERY reasonable price tags, I did not expect a lot and purchased them more to experiment with economical tools rather than relying on them. WELL ... I was in for a pleasant surprise! Both units perform very well, are extremely compact, and became go-to microscopes when it is inconvenient to use my research microscope. Consequently, they are good field companions for a cariery of nature observations.

Combining the two Carson microscopes, I can operate from 20X to 60X, and from 100X to 250X which is more than enough for quick field work. Both units feature illumination, which is very handy to tackle less than ideal lighting conditions -- especially at higher magnifications.

A word of caution, however, although these microscopes work exceptionally well, do not expect them to be usable like a loupe! To obtain optimum results, you must stabilize the specimen and the microscope. Trying to use them as a handheld magnifier is futile and decidedly frustrating.

The 100X to 250X unit comes complete with a good smartphone adapter allowing the phone camera to capture photographs and videos of your specimens BUT the adapter cannot be used with an armored phone case. The adapter MUST be mounted right on the bare phone, in which case it functions as expected.

This microscope has an inverted image, very very short focus distance and DOF, a very short eye relief and hence is not practical at all. You will get much better results even with a cheap low resolution USB microscope. I mean it can be useful if you need to examine something quickly in the field, but honestly, any powerful loupe connected to your phone camera will get you adequate magnification (20x), but will be much easier to use, because the image is not inverted and the focus distance and DOF are much greater with the loupe.

I use it to help identify plants. If you've never tried to hand hold a microscope, it is very difficult at its lowest power. At its highest power it is close to impossible unless you rest the object on a solid surface.
