PRODUCT SELECTION TIPS:
To properly select a pump, determine the USAGE or GPM (gallons per minute) you require. Count the number of fixtures including all faucets (including outside faucets unless those use a different water source), toilets, and water consuming appliances. Do not include water treatment appliances such as a hot water tank or water filter. Each fixture counts as 1 GPM. Example: a house with one full bathroom (sink, tub/shower, toilet, kitchen sink, basement sink, outside facet, washing machine and dishwater = 8 fixtures = 8 GPM.
Determine your PUMPING WATER LEVEL (found in the same locations as where you found your fill rate). Assuming you are using a 30/50 pressure switch, look at the 30 PSI information for the pump to determine the pump's performance at your water level at 30 PSI. We have provided this information for you in the specifications found above. Look at the pump's performance at the depth at 30 PSI and compare it to your usage and pumping water level. It should be equal or greater than the pump's performance. If this isn't the pump you are looking for, visit the Red Lion store under Clean Water to find other pumps that may be more suitable. The link is found at the top of the page.
Also determine the well's FILL RATE of your well. This can be found in your well driller's report, or possibly on a label beside the pump's power supply or control box or written in the existing pump's manual. If you can't find that information, we recommend contacting a well driller, who can come out and provide you with a well driller's report. If the Usage (calculated earlier) is GREATER THAN THE FILL RATE, there's a risk that the well could run dry. To address this, we recommend installing a low-pressure cut-off switch. This will shut the pump off if the well runs dry or loses pressure, protecting your investment. The switch will have to be reset (prime the pump and hold the level down to restart the pump) until the pump kicks in and this only has to be done if the switch shuts off the pump. Auto start options are available through professional installers if this needs to be done often.
INSTALLATION TIPS (Additional instructions, safety tips, and troubleshooting tips are found in the pump's manual.:
- This pump is rated 4 OUT OF 5 in level of difficulty (5 being most difficult). Electrical wiring is required along with precise measurements for cutting the piping. We strongly recommend hiring a licensed jet pump installer with jet pump installation experience for this installation.
- This pump is DUAL VOLTAGE which means it will work with both 115 Volt and 230 Volt power sources. The voltage selection indicator on the pump MUST MATCH the power source. The pump is set for 230 Volt operation. To use the pump for 115 Volt installation, the voltage indicator on the pump must be changed to 115 Volts. Instructions for changing the voltage are found in the pump's manual. Remove the top of the motor terminal box located at the top of the pump. To change from 230-volts to 115-volts, insert the end of a flat screwdriver in the opening provided and slide the voltage indicate to the left. Do not remove any wires, (See Owner's Manual for illustration.)
- USE PTFE tape on all pipe thread and ensure the the suction and discharge lines are AIRTIGHT otherwise the pump will lose prime and will be extremely noisy (called cavitation).
- A FOOT VALVE (not included) should be installed in the well unless a well point is used. If replacing the pump, always check the functionality of the foot valve at the same time as this might have been why your previous pump failed. If a well point is used, a CHECK VALVE (not included) should be installed on the suction line which keeps the pump primed and prevents rapid cycling.
- PRIME the pump! See the pump's manual for instructions on priming the pump as instructions are different depending on whether you are using a foot valve or check valve.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 9, 2018Verified PurchasePut it to the test and it worked great. It had a 15ft well lift and a 25ft head. Supplied my cabin needs, sink and shower, daily for the summer. Put it in line with a 5gallon pressure tank. It was easy to install in the spring and quick to drain and store for winter. I had minimum water use so the 1/2 horse was plenty for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good pump
Verified PurchaseI get a lot of water in my house's sump pit, so a couple years ago decided to install a drip irrigation system with an irrigation pump to make use of the water, rather than just pumping it into the sewer system. My previous irrigation pump failed after about 2 years and 110k gallons (see my Goplus 1200W Shallow Well Pump review). I paid a little more for this pump so hopefully it will last longer, plus repair parts are available (unlike the Goplus pump). It does the job and is reasonably quiet - no complaints. So far it has pumped about 30k gallons since installation July-2017.
11/3/18 update: completed irrigation pumping for the season. The Red Lion pump continues to work perfectly, and now has pumped a total of around 65,000 gallons to irrigate my yard over the two seasons its been in service.
7/14/22 update - still working great for my irrigation system. The last couple years it has taken a couple attempts to get it started in spring - plug in for a few seconds, unplug for a few seconds, plug in again. I assume the shaft has become somewhat stuck over winter, but it does start up after just a couple cycles.
5/9/23 update - took multiple attempts to get it going this year. I plug it in, hear it struggling to start, then unplug it before it blows a fuse. I had about given up but tried it one more time and it started! Since it is sitting in water unused for about 6 months, I think something seizes up and it takes a while to break loose. Once started up, it works great. It has now been pumping water for over 6 years.
10/27/23 update - just turned it off for the winter season. It is still working great - has pump over 200k gallons since install in 2017. I plan to alleviate the spring startup issue (mentioned above) by starting it up every week over winter, just to break loose whatever makes it hard to start in spring.
5/14/24 update - started it about once a week over winter (just pumped water back into my sump pit for about 5 sec) and had no issues starting up this spring for my drip irrigation system. Still very happy with pump.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well pumping from a tank, plenty of pressure and flow
Verified PurchaseI'm using this to pump from an above-ground tank to a pressure tank and our house. It works well and is smooth and fairly quiet. Its designed to pump from a shallow well so this is an easy duty for it. The submersible pump in our 250-ft well was not providing enough pressure and flow when pumping directly to our pressure tank so now it keeps the storage tank full, controlled by a float switch. And this new pump provides plenty of water when we need it.
It requires a 1-1/4" external check valve on the suction side. The 1" discharge doesn't require a check valve. There are two mounting feet at the flange between the motor and pump. I attached them to a short piece of 2x6 and put rubber feet on it. The pipes also hold it in place so there is no problem with vibration. It comes set for 230 volts but is easy to switch to 115 which I did, and attached a cord and plug to it.
I was going to install a separate pressure switch but the one that comes on it works fine. It's a clone of a Square D pressure switch, and can be adjusted for higher pressure by turning a screw. Instructions are inside the cover. I would recommend this to a friend or even a total stranger.

5.0 out of 5 stars The pump that won't die
Verified PurchaseLong story. I attached this pump to a pressure tank at my camp site. But it's not that simple. The pump is down inside a narrow pit to keep it under frost level. Unfortunately, the pit fills with water, so I also have a sump pump down there to keep the water level down. One time when I wasn't there, the power went out and the pit filled with water. I later arrived at camp to find the pump and tank upside down in the pit because they had flipped over during the flooding episode. I unplugged everything, got everything right side up, and dried out the pressure switch. I plugged it back in and hoped for the best. Miraculously, the pump fired right up. Fast forward about a year. The power went out again during the winter. Once again, the pump flipped over and floated to the top (I had no way of fastening it to the bottom), only this time the water forced the pump above the frost line where it froze solid in ice. In fact, the water in the pump froze and expanded to the point where it had split the pump casting in half. When I got there in spring, I saw what had happened, but didn't realize that the pump was split in half. I put the pump and tank right side up again, which was getting really old, and plugged it in. The pump just hummed, so I unplugged it. I had to remove the fan shroud and spray it with pb blaster and work the shaft with pliers to loosen it up. After I freed up the shaft, I plugged it in and it started pumping up the tank, but it was really loud because the bearings had rusted. It was then that I noticed the pump casting was leaking water out the side. I unplugged and went down in the pit to check and noticed the pump housing was split in two, with about a 3/8" gap on one side. I then plugged it back in, at which time the pump continued to scream in agony. Even so, it still pumped up the pressure in the tank to where it was used for spraying off my camper. I still have the pump and use it like that occasionally until I can get it replaced, though I recommend not doing what I do. If this pump can survive an ordeal like I put it through, then it should definitely be fine with a normal owner.
