From the manufacturer

The Little Giant RS-5 115-volt diaphragm switch can be used in sump systems, ponds, skimmers, fountains, hydroponic basins and with any utility pump. This switch can easily fit in small spaces such as a 5-gallon pail. The RS-5 is designed to control 60 Hz,115-volt pumps up to a maximum of 1/2 hp or 15 running Amps.
This normally open/pump down switch starts and stops the pump automatically. The pump activates when water reaches 8" and shuts off when water falls down to 2" (+/- 0.5"). The switch is made of corrosion-resistant nylon and is suitable for use with non-potable water.
Installation is easy with the piggyback plug. Just plug the pump into the switch's plug and plug the switch into the outlet. Mounting hardware is included.
The RS-5 switch comes in your choice of lengths: 10' or 18'.
Rs-5 Pump Down Diaphragm Switch
For Pond/Skimmer Installations
A favorite for pond and fountain enthusiasts because of it's SMALL PROFILE allowing it to fit in basins, skimmers and vaults where other switches can't. 10' and 18' cord lengths are available. See comparison chart below.
This switch is 4.75" high x 3.03" long x 1.7" wide.
For Hydroponic Installations
The ability to fit inside a 5 gallon pail makes this the switch hydroponics operators seek out.
For Sump Installations
Tangle-free operation and small profile make this switch popular in sump systems, especially in systems with a back-up pump is taking up additional room.
For Utility Pumps
Turn your utility pump into an automatic pump by adding the RS-5 diaphragm switch. Whether you are emptying a flooded basement, using it in a window well, or draining a ditch, using the switch allows you to go on with other activities without worrying about watching the pump.
On/Off Levels
The RS-5 activates the pump at approximately 8" and shuts off the pump at approximately 2" +/- 0.5".
Easy Installation
The RS-5 features a PIGGYBACK plug making it extremely easy to use. Just plug the pump into the switch and plug the switch into the outlet.
Need to switch back to manual mode? No problem, just unplug the pump from the switch and plug it directly into the outlet.

Product description
鶹.ca Product Description
Little Giant's piggyback diaphragm switch converts any manual pump up to 1/2 HP (115V, 15 maximum running Amps) to automatic operation. Includes a 10-foot power cord. Designed to operate in water the compact design works well in limited space. The switch can be used by attaching it to the the discharge pipe to control on-off operation of the pump. The switch is activated by pressure to a diaphragm, caused by rising water around the switch housing. The switch activates the pump when water reaches 8 inches and shuts the pump off when water falls to 2 inches (+/- 0.5 inches). This switch is ideal for use with sump pumps. Note: the power cord contains a breather tube. Be sure power cord is not pinches so that the breather tube doesn't get obstructed. Non-restrictive air flow is required for proper operation.

Beware of Missing Parts

- Reviewed in Canada on January 9, 2025Verified PurchaseHad the unpleasant job of having to replace the switch in a septic holding tank. Once all of the "stuff" was pumped out of the tank we were able to install this and it worked great all summer. Cottage shut down for winter but hoping it works for us come next year too.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 18, 2024Verified PurchaseGreat product for the price, so far it has done the job for the last couple years
- Reviewed in Canada on January 22, 2022Verified PurchaseThis took a bit of fiddling, but after proper setup it is the perfect replacement for the non-functional float switch on my sump pump. Keep in mind is this is a pressure differential switch. The water level will be reduced by approximately 7" or 175 mm when the switch turns on the pump. The lower down in the sump you affix the switch, the lower the levels will stay. I have it about 4" (100 mm) above the bottom of my sump, and this switch consistently keeps the water level between 2" (50 mm) and 10" (250 mm). It starts my pump automatically whenever the water reaches that ~10" mark, and pumps down to ~2-3". There is always water in the bottom of my sump, so the pump doesn't ever start dry. I was concerned about the cost of this switch, but I am very happy with my purchase. It has been running flawlessly since November.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 21, 2020Verified PurchaseHad a first switch die out after 7 years of service (removing it for winter), with water infiltrating into the chamber (I am guessing there should not be water there). 4 stars out of 5 because could have lasted longer - the pump itself is still running...
- Reviewed in Canada on June 17, 2024Verified PurchaseSump pump switch is awesome and 鶹 sells for far below any local supplier even with my professional discounts.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 20, 2024Verified PurchaseReliable and well made switch.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 28, 2024Verified PurchaseI bought this diaphragm switch in 2021 to attach to my pond pump. Haven't had a chance to use it until this week. Once it was set up and I turned the pump on, my ground fault tripped repeatedly. Finally, I decided to open the switch and found there are none of the necessary parts included, only what is shown in the attached photo. $83 for an empty shell with a cord. Beware.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfect (so far)
Verified PurchaseWorks perfect (so far).
It's screwed into lower pump housing on a non Little Giant 3200 GPH pump located within a pond skimmer.
You'd just have to make sure your screws don't penetrate a vital pump area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works fine - got me thru Hurricane Sandy!
Verified PurchaseI found that the original switch on my sump pump was not switching off so I needed to make a call to replace the switch or replace the entire unit. My basement flooded during Irene - so I knew I was in danger of that happening again and didn't want to take any chances. I replace the switch, tested it and all has been well - but I did get a generator and spare battery for the backup pump as in a power outage it doesn't matter if the pump is working when you have no power ... and then Sandy hit. Boy was I glad. The switch, and the pump, worked flawlessly all thru the rain and the snowmelt from the following storm.
This was much cheaper than a new pump. Very easy to fit (2 screws) and could actually be used to operate dual-pumps if you had that setup to handle very large volumes, or wanted the redundancy. Be aware that it needs a decent head of water before it activates - I needed to pour 15-20 gallons into the sump before it triggered - seems to need 8-10 inches of head. This is actually a good thing - pumps have a longer life if they have a longer cycle time - better to run for 30 seconds an hour than 10 seconds 3 times an hour. Just don't think it's not working if you have a foot of water in your sump and it's still not on - the footer and mounting will take 4-5 inches.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works well, but has some design defects
Verified PurchaseWorks well enough... But has some easy to fix design defects that are so glaring it's strange they were not caught before!
First, the pros: looks good and solid enough, works very well: starts and stops the water at about the expected levels. But, there are two cons: first, plastic construction is very light: so light in fact that it floats in the water and does not sink to the bottom! So I can't just lower it down and have it sit at the bottom of the sump well, but rather have to place a brick on it to keep it down. Can't believe the company could not attach a small metal weight to weigh it down! Second con is lack of any way to test it: my old diaphragm switch has a small button I could push to test it, but not this guy.
So, I am keeping it, but 2 very small things could have made me a lot happier! Minus 1 star for each of them.
