- Reviewed in Canada on October 20, 2021Verified PurchaseThe good: Love the book. Great pictures and descriptions. I'm brand new to foraging and it's written for and intended for people new to mycology and foraging. It also lists 2 websites that are supremely helpful. Very detailed descriptions and lots of great info (like taste descriptors, and whether or not they need to be cooked or boiled before eating, etc)
The bad: it doesnt show ALL available or edible mushrooms in Alberta. There's only about 50 or so listed. And if you're on the hunt for "magic" shrooms, this book does not list them. It also describes what poisonous mushrooms each one may resemble, but doesn't show pictures of the poisonous ones to illustrate the difference.
I just like finding mushrooms like a scavenger hunt, so that's not a problem, but if you plan to collect & eat what you find, I'd suggest using an app on your phone or posting a picture of the mushroom in chats or on mushroom-enthusiast websites that help identify them before consuming them.
The ugly: NOTHING! the pictures are absolutely beautiful and overall it's a great resource for someone new to mushroom foraging.
Happy hunting!

- Reviewed in Canada on October 5, 2018Verified PurchaseThis book has great colour photographs and decent descriptions. The information on mushroom basics is well laid out and easy to read. The book is limited with only showing 50 different mushrooms and sadly 4 of the pages were devoted to puff balls. A number of mushrooms chosen for this book were described as mediocre edibles. I was disappointed to see a number of common Alberta mushrooms were not included in this collection. For example, Shaggy Parasols are an excellent mushroom to collect and eat but were not included. As mentioned in the headline... a good start but could have had much more added to make it a more comprehensive book.
