Who We Are: Four Questions For a Life and a Nation
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
鶹
Named a Book to Read This Fall by CBC Books and the Toronto Star One of Indigo’s Most Anticipated Books
Judge, senator, and activist. Father, grandfather, and friend. This is Murray Sinclair’s story—and the story of a nation—in his own words, an oral history that forgoes the trappings of the traditionally written memoir to center Indigenous ways of knowledge and storytelling. As Canada moves forward into the future of Reconciliation, one of its greatest leaders guides us to ask the most important and difficult question we can ask of ourselves: Who are we?
For decades, Senator Sinclair has fearlessly educated Canadians about the painful truths of our history. He was the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba, and only the second Indigenous judge in Canadian history. He was the Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and remains one of the foremost voices on Reconciliation. And now, for the first time, he shares his full story—and his full vision for our nation—with readers across Canada and beyond.
Drawing on Senator Sinclair’s perspectives regarding Indigenous identity, human rights, and justice, Who We Are examines the roles of history, resistance, and resilience in the pursuit of finding a path forward, one that heals the damaged relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. In doing so, it reveals Senator Sinclair’s life in a new and direct way, exploring how all of these unique experiences have shaped him as an Anishinaabe man, father, and grandfather.
Structured around the four questions that have long shaped Senator Sinclair’s thinking and worldview—Where do I come from? Where am I going? Why am I here? Who am I?—Who We Are takes listeners into the story of his remarkable life as never before, while challenging them to embrace an inclusive vision for our shared future.
The book includes the What We Have Learned report, created by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC).

- Reviewed in Canada on April 18, 2025Verified PurchaseJudge, Senator, head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. He would hate the title, but spokesperson for indigenous in Canada. His compassion and respect for residential school survivors is unparalleled. Highly recommended read.
- Reviewed in Canada on February 6, 2025Verified PurchaseA critical book for all Canadians and anyone who wants to better understand the journey of Murray Sinclair and the journey that many native Canadians were put through by our government. Clearly written and important messages throughout. The last 150 pages or so are a summary of the Truth and Reconciliation commission. Even though I am familiar with the story of residential schools and the trauma and pain they caused, reading the summary report and Murray Sinclair's thoughts and words helped me better understand the complexity of the situation, the nuances and the long lasting damage that Canadian colonialist and imperialist intents caused to generations of of our fellow citizens.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 21, 2025Verified PurchaseGood history lesson from a very thoughtful, insightful human being.
- Reviewed in Canada on November 27, 2024Verified PurchaseThe book is not a technical treatise about the national and parliamentary processes, but of a life lived out in both the First Nations and the Canadian political worlds. His humanity is seen on every page and we can relate to it. It gives us a better appreciation of the worldview of the First Nations' people in flesh and blood. We experience his joys and sorrows along the way. I read it just before his passing and was pleased to have known him through this and not just a political face to the TRC. Miigwech!

5.0 out of 5 stars A true contribution to indigenous literature.
Verified PurchaseThe book is half autobiography and half documentary. The Honorable Murray Sinclair has lived a notable life of achievement, and we find his account of it in his own words. That is followed by a somewhat unembellished account of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the subsequent findings.
This book is worth a read for many reasons. I gained a much better understanding of the man and his contributions to Canada and their indigenous nations. His conclusions and recommendations are thought provoking.
