Review
"This mindblowing YA thriller from E. Lockhart will make you glad you're the 99 percent...And that's about all we can tell you when it comes to the story of 'We Were Liars,' the book by E. Lockhart that everyone will be reading, and re-reading, this summer. It's twisty, it's mysterious, and it's got a surprise ending that'll knock your socks off."
?Kat Rosenfield, MTV News
"Surprising, thrilling, and beautifully executed in spare, precise, and lyrical prose,?Lockhart spins a tragic family drama, the roots of which go back generations. And the ending? Shhhh. Not telling. (But its a doozy)...This is poised to be big." Booklist, starred review
"Lockhart has created a mystery with an ending most readers wont see coming, one so horrific it will prompt some to return immediately to page one to figure out how they missed it. At the center of it is a girl who learns the hardest way of all what family means, and what it means to lose the one that really mattered to you." Publishers Weekly, starred review
"Riveting, brutal and beautifully told." Kirkus, starred review
"The ending is a stunner that? will haunt readers for a long time to come." School Library Journal, starred review
"A taut psychological mystery marked by an air of uneasy disorientation...The ultimate reveal is shocking both for its tragedy and for the how-could-I-have-not-suspected-that? feeling it leaves us with. But we didnt, which is Lockharts commendable triumph." The Horn Book, starred review
This is a love story as much as it is a psychological mysteryAstonishing." Shelf Awareness, starred review
[a] haunting, sophisticated mystery...a novel so twisty and well-told that it will appeal to older readers as well as to adolescents. The Wall Street Journal
Irresistible premise for this ticking time bomb of a novel. The New York Times Book Review
"A Lockhart YA is always a treat and this is no exception...The glimpse we get into a life of privilege, a lifestyle most of us can only imagine, is insightful and thrilling. The ending will shock the mose jaded of readers, we promise!" RT Book Reviews
"There's trouble in paradise at the opening of National Book Award finalist and Printz honoree E. Lockhart's shattering yet ultimately hopeful YA novel . . . and neither family nor reader will ever be the same." Library Journal
"It's a nearly perfect story, and it's utterly absorbing." Bustle,? A?YA Best?Book of the Year
"No book on this summer's reading list will have readers immobilized in their hammocks more than E. Lockhart's We Were Liars..... This book has that surprise quality--like Elizabeth Wein's Code Name Verity--that makes readers scramble back through hungrily devoured chapters and wonder in admiration: Could I have seen this coming? Did I miss any clues?" Newsday
"Like a shard of glass, WE WERE LIARS glitters and shines, then cuts deep. E. Lockhart has truly outdone herself with this masterful, darkly mesmerizing portrait of a fractured family ruined by the excess of wealth. Humming with rich descriptions and razor-sharp intelligence, the story of Cadence Sinclair Eastman will both inspire and haunt readers for years to come." Sarah Pitre, Forever Young Adult
"Perception often is not reality -- and it certainly is not in WE WERE LIARS. This is a look at what a perfect world looks like on the inside and how it unravels once one of the players sees it for what it is. Pitch perfect in both plotting and character development."
?Carol Fitzgerald, Book Reporter
"The must-read contemporary novel so far this year is definitely E. Lockharts stellar We Were Liars, a rich, stunning summer mystery with a sharp twist that will leaving you dying to talk about the book with a pal or ten." Sonia Charaipotra, Parade

- Reviewed in Canada on July 12, 2020Verified PurchasePeople either seem to really hate this book or really love it. Personally, I loved it. I haven't read for fun in years, but this book was so captivating, and I literally could not put it down. Got me back into reading. I definitely bawled my eyes out at the end, and their story stays with me to this day. This story is hauntingly beautiful, and I could read it over and over and still not get bored. Cady, Gat, Mirren, and Johnny will always have a special place in my heart. It really gives you something to think about, and leaves you with your mouth wide open at the end. I really did gasp.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 31, 2024Verified PurchaseThis book is a curl up on the patio read. It leaves me hoping for more detail and dialogue on the adult characters and the complicated relationship with their families and children. Although the Patriarch is a tyrant, it is insinuated but not detailed. I loved this easy read!
- Reviewed in Canada on January 13, 2023Verified PurchaseI only read this book because my boss raved about it before it got popular on TikTok. Then TikTok raved about it so thought I should give it a chance. Im going to be honest it wasnt what I expected and the writing style wasnt really for me, but as I read on I got used to it and ended up enjoying the book. I gave it three stars because it was a good and easy read and I liked the unreliable narrator. If I read this in high school I wouldve loved this book, but as an adult I can say that I enjoyed it, but I dont see the hype. The ending did break my heart, but there are other books Ive read the gutted me. I still recommend this book if youre looking for something quick and enjoyable.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 2, 2016Verified PurchaseMy opinion on the novel:
The description of this novel doesn't really say much, does it? Well let me tell you that it was enough to make me wonder from the begining what is so special about this family? What is their secret? What is going on?
As I was turning the pages of this amazing novel, I felt more and more intrigued. There were so many secrets and I could not understand why nobody said what was going on. I wanted to reach the end but at the same time I didn't want to reach the end.
The novel is mostly about these four teenagers that share a secret. As a reader I was constantly trying to catch on clues, I was thinking or maybe wondering if the things happening were actually happening or if someone was just inventing things, thinking that it was all real. I finally understood when I reach the last chapter. But the description says: And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE. I won't lie :) but I won't share the ending either. The only thing that I must say is that I needed a few minutes to recover after I closed the book.
I definitely recommend this novel and it totally deserves 5 stars!!!

I also loved the author's writing style.

The hype surrounding this book was unreal. All the bloggers and authors that read it early made it seem like they were part of this secret society. They knew the ending and reading this book was going to blow readers minds and well of course I needed to have my mind blown open. Although I don't think We Were Liars is the best book I've ever read, but I was pretty shocked when the truth and ending was revealed.
Our narrator is Cady. Oldest Sinclair grandchild and heiress to the the Sinclair fortune. Cady is trying to piece together a mystery from two summers ago. A mystery involving her. All she remembers is being found washed up on the shore of her families island estate in her underwear. Now Cady's having flashbacks to previous summers spent on her families private island with her family and more importantly her two cousins, Johnny and Mirren and their friend Gat. The Liars. The Liars were inseparable. Their friendship and love is endearing. As their family starts to fall apart around them, they begin to grow and form their own opinions on what is right. The Sinclair family is all about appearance and some of the family mottos include pretending everything is alright. Well for all of this book, nothing is alright.
Because of Cady's head injury she is a very unreliable narrator. You never know when to trust her. But that's what makes this story so raw and touching. Cady's life has fallen so far down that when she suddenly has a memory of her and the rest of The Liars you get a small thought that everything might be okay.
Lockhart's writing is bloody fantastic. It's full of beauty and prose. It's deep and gives you all the feels. I am now collecting all her previous books. I needs them all!

- Reviewed in Canada on April 29, 2021Verified PurchaseI honestly was quite decepoint about the whole book. The story is amazing but the writing was not it. I really love the story dont get me wrong but it was just too long for nothing. The plot was predictable and sad but didnt make me cry because I just wanted to know what really happened and the book made it heavy to read it.

Verified PurchaseThe story is amazing, is so well written that I was for a second feeling the same as the main character, a bit dizzy, with headaches, I couldn't stop reading. Finished the book in less than 30 hours, and of course, the end is shocking, as soon as I finished I went back to the last chapters to re-read because I couldn't believe it.
Amazing experience, such a different but interesting story, of course, is not the easiest to relate to, but the author did great.
