A View from the Top of the World is the fifteenth studio album by progressive metal band Dream Theater. This acts as their first album to be recorded at their own studio, DTHQ (Dream Theater Headquarters), and their first since Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009) to include fewer than nine tracks. Additionally, it is their first album since Dream Theater (2013) to both contain a track of at least ten minutes in length and end with the longest track.

    Don't get me wrong. Dream Theater still puts out good music! But over the last few albums, it feels like you can almost interchange songs and they would not feel out of place. It just seems that it is more of the same.
    Granted, this album contains a Grammy Award Winner - The Alien - which is complex song (they boasted it was written in 17/8 at the Grammy's!) that starts the album on a high note but then the vocals kick in (nothing against the singer, he's actually ok/good on the album!) - it just falls flat.

    Petrucci gets to demonstrate his new 8-string guitar on Awaken The Monster.

    Title track is the usual (almost mandatory now) epic song. It is good though.

    Overall, not a bad album at all, just that it lacks a certain...I don't know...humph maybe?
