TERRO Liquid Ant Bait

To kill common household ants, simply place the pre-filled, ready-to-use liquid ant bait stations near indoor areas where ants are spotted. Ants enter the trap, consume the liquid ant bait, then return to the nest where they pass on the bait to the rest of the colony. Each box contains 6 baits.

TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are specifically designed to kill the worker ant in two to three days, giving the foraging ants enough time to share the bait with the rest of the unsuspecting colony. The liquid ant bait stations prevent the bait from drying out and provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night.

Baits vs. Contact Killers

Baits
  • Attracts ants fast
  • Slow kill
  • Kills the ants you see and the ants you don't
Contact Killers

Contact killers, on the other hand, kill insects immediately, can be applied as a spot treatment and provides residual protection.

How Does It Work?

This is a bait product, so initially you're going to see more ants—lots more. Here's why—as ant foragers look for food, they are attracted to the sweet liquid ant bait. Once foraging worker ants find the liquid bait, they consume it and drop what is called a 'trail pheromone' back to the nest that lets all the other worker ants know the location of the food supply. This is why you will initially see more ants when using the liquid ant baits.

While the active ingredient in the bait will ultimately kill the worker ant, it slowly interferes with the ant's digestive system so the worker has time to get back and share the ant bait with the rest of the colony. This slow kill is needed to allow time for the foraging ants to make several trips to the bait and deliver enough bait to the rest of the colony. This is the only way to get rid of both the ants you see and the ants you don't.

Because this is a bait product, it is important to eliminate all other food sources in the area. This will ensure that the ants aren't tempted to eat anything but the (deadly) liquid ant bait. The liquid ant bait station should remain as undisturbed as possible while the ants are actively feeding on it.

Where to Place Ant Bait Stations

Simply place the liquid ant bait stations near ant trails or areas where ants are numerous. It's also a good idea to stop ants in their tracks by placing additional bait stations anywhere ants may try to infiltrate your home. For best results, use all six bait stations to ensure a sufficient supply for the unsuspecting ants to feast on.

Keep your eye on the bait stations to monitor activity but resist the temptation to interfere when you witness the ants coming in droves to feast on the bait. Your patience will pay off as you watch your ant infestation dwindle then disappear.

When necessary, replace with additional bait stations when the first set is depleted. Once your ant problem is under control, replace the bait stations every three months as prevention to keep the ants from marching back into your home.

Now It's Feeding Time

Now that you know how the liquid ant bait actually works and where to place the bait stations, it's time for the feeding frenzy to begin. Break apart the bait stations, hold upright, and cut off the colored part with a pair of scissors. Then place the station where it's needed. Depending on the size of the infestation, complete control may take up to two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I just placed several TERRO Liquid Ant Baits in my kitchen and it's attracting more ants, not killing them! What's going on?

A: You have nothing to worry about! Initially, you will see more ants. As ant foragers look for food, they are attracted to the sweet liquid in the bait which they consume and carry back to feed to the rest of the colony. On the way back to the nest, the ants drop what it called a 'trail pheromone', letting the other ants know where the tasty food supply is. In turn, these ants follow the trail to the bait which explains why you initially see more ants

Q: I've been using TERRO Liquid Ant Bait for the past few days. When should I remove the bait stations?

A: We recommend leaving the bait out for three to four days after signs of ant activity diminish. If no more ants appear, remove the bait, relax and enjoy being ant-free!

Q: The ants in my kitchen are avoiding the TERRO Ant Killer – can you explain why?

A: As long as the bait is in liquid form (has not hardened or thickened) it should be effective because the active ingredient does not diminish over time. The ants may have found another food source, by seeking a grease-based vs. sugar-based food, or be in the breeding cycle of their colony and not interested in eating.

Q: How long does it take to eliminate an ant colony with TERRO Liquid Ant Bait?

A: The ants consume large quantities of the bait and then return to the nest and share it with the rest of the colony, killing the ants you see and the ants you don't. This process can take up to two weeks, depending on the size of the infestation. Each ant that consumes the bait will die within 24 - 48 hours. It is important to leave the bait as undisturbed as possible while the ants are actively feeding on it. You should replace it only if it becomes inaccessible to the ants, or empty.

Terro Liquid Ant Killer Bait Traps Work
We normally get some ants each Spring, which we’ve effectively dealt with using a borax bait. This Spring the ants seemed mostly unaffected by the borax so we tried these Terro liquid ant killer bait traps. Within a few days all of the ants were dead or gone. Most apparently took the bait back to their friends but some didn’t even make it that far, see photo. Would highly recommend this product.

I live in a large apartment building and had a moderate pharaoh ant infestation. I tried sealing off all their entry points with silicone and foam sealant, but they kept finding another way through. They are very small and can get through even the smallest cracks.

I tried a protein bait, but they didn't go for it. Then I tried these Terro baits. Initially I didn't think they would work as I put an ant right in front of one but it refused to go in. Then I put the bait on the ground in their trail and made a ramp up to the opening with mounting putty (aka Sticky Tak, Fun-Tak, etc). It took a few hours, but eventually the bait was swarming with ants. I put down 3 traps spread apart at different key entry points into my apartment, and refreshed them all after a week, though I'm not sure if refreshing them was actually necessary.

After 2 weeks their numbers appear to have greatly dropped, and I only see a small number of them at the traps every day. I imagine it will take a few more weeks to bring the number close to zero (hopefully). I'm not sure if I'll ever completely rid my apartment of these pharaoh ants as they are probably infested throughout the building in many different nests, but at least I seem to have a way of controlling them now. I now almost never see them on countertops or in cupboards where I keep food anymore, and they seem to stick to the areas around the traps (and likely go back and forth between the traps and their nests), so the situation is much much better. Even if I have to keep these traps out for many months, it's really not that big of a deal, as they are low cost and don't really get in the way that much.

These type of traps may not work for every type of ant, but for the pharaoh ants in my apartment building they seem to work well.

UPDATE EDIT: It's been about 3 months since I started using this Terro liquid bait on the pharaoh ants, and I now no longer see them at all, which is great! This could be temporary, as I have no control of what is happening outside of my apartment itself, but if they do come back I think they will be easy to deal with and control using these traps. I learned that it is best to refresh each trap every week, as the pharaoh ants seems to grow less interested in the traps over time. By the end of it I was only replacing 1 trap every week at a key entry point for the ants, so it's minimal cost. The liquid in the traps does progress from a pure liquid state to a gel over time. Maybe there is some sort of food attractant in the bait that dies out over time.

2nd UPDATE: It's been about a year now. These ant traps definitely help keep the situation under control, but I don't think I'll ever be rid of the issue as I have no control over anything outside of my apartment. Sometimes I can go weeks and even more than a month without seeing an ant, but they always seem to come back. I imagine they are festering somewhere outside my apartment. So I have just accepted putting these traps out every now an again to control the situation. Sometimes they are able to establish a nest in my apartment, but using these traps I have been able to get rid of any that pop up. I think the only way to fully eliminate the pharaoh ant issue is to have an exterminator bait the whole apartment building, which I don't think is going to happen anytime soon talking to the building superintendent.

3rd UPDATE: In addition to making a ramp with mounting putty up to the opening, I also put a thin layer of mounting below the front "legs" of the trap. This helps prevent the liquid from coming out the opening and also from getting onto the ant path inside the trap. Some traps are filled up more than others, and the ones that are topped up too much usually need this mounting putty "shim" to keep the fluid from flowing over where you don't want it to go. I also use a Q-tip to clean out the opening of liquid bait before I put it down, as this helps prevent ants from just gathering in a crowd at the opening rather than going inside the trap. I now no longer use regular scissors to make the trap opening, and now use aviation (sheet metal) snips. Scissors are fine, but the snips are better.

Put 2 of these on my kitchen counter last spring when I had an ant problem. Took a good week to work but there were a bunch of dead ants inside and around it. After that, I haven't had too much of an ant problem. Solved my problem quickly! I think the ants bring the liquid back to their colony and it kills them all since they haven't returned yet and spring is almost done. It has been a year since I last used it.
However, be careful and mindful with where you place the bait traps, especially if you have animals or children! We left one on the ground (not thinking) and our dog licked it which could have been really bad.

May 1 2025 I've used a couple of packages and can't say it works 100%. Some ants may have taken the bait back to the hive but the activity does not seem to have lessened. Leaves me rather skeptical. "results may vary"
The vails can be difficult to open, I've found a pair of cutting pliers work on the ends with less chance of spillage.
I had one of the opened vials turn over and found ants swimming in the product. This was in a space I could leave for a couple of days. Just checked it, no dead ants and traffic flow is the same.
    Wonder if 鶹 sells aardvarks?

    May 18 2025 UPDATE
With-in last few days the ant parade has slowed to half a dozen a day. Watching the slowing numbers I was able to track them down to their entry points. Time to whip out my caulk.

These were useful and the ants loved the bait. It didn't smell or present any issue for pets. Don't tip it out or kick it or it will spill. I found these traps worked best placed along the baseboards or where they weren't going to get stepped on. The added benefit to this placement is that you won't step on the ants that crowd in for a party when they discover the traps (insert vomit emoji here...).

I noticed the population of small brown house ants dwindle and then disappear altogether. These were so much more effective than the other major brand ones I've used for years that are black plastic. After a year or so they dry out/harden and you need new ones, the other brand I used they didn't work more than a few months, this one did last much longer.

As a bonus, when my dryer vent fell in and large black ants from outside came into my house, they ate the bait too! Miraculously they brought it back outside to the massive ant colony that has plagued my garden for YEARS and that multiple brands of baits, diatomaceous earth, or anything else ever worked on!! FINALLY. I am so relieved. Not sure how to use these outside but if there's a way to make them squirrel proof I may try..

Great product I highly recommend and I will be purchasing more for years to come as long as this effective product is still on the market.

I have used and tried them all. Every bait, trap, spray, liquid drops on the market and every home remedy, trick or hack that I come across. This is the first one that I have ever used that has actually made a lasting difference. I put them out and within a few days the ants were gone! It has been a few months now and I have seen 2. Not only that but unlike other bait stations that dry out or something the oily goo inside is still there and the instructions say it will work as long as there is liquid inside. Not only that but there has been a massive reduction in the number of Multicoloured Asian Ladybird Beetles that gather around my windows. Occasionally I find one or two floating in the bait station. It doesn’t seem to change how effective it is but it looks yucky on my kitchen window so they are put in a less noticeable spot and a new one goes on the windowsill. I am telling everyone I know who is struggling with this to buy this because it works!
