What is a neutral wire?

A neutral wire allows our switch to be powered while simultaneously allowing the lighting circuit connected to your lights to be power off.

Do I have neutral wires?

  • If your house was built in the mid-1980s or later, there is an excellent chance that you have neutrals everywhere in your home.
  • If there is an outlet (wall receptacle) near the switch, most likely that switch box has a neutral.
  • Switches that are ganged together have a much higher likelihood of having neutrals, no matter what year.

Checking the switch box

The best way is to check the actual wires in the switch box where you want to install Treatlife.

  • Please observe all safety precautions before handling the electrical wiring in your switch boxes.
  • Turn off your breaker box.
  • Take off the trim plate over the switch.
  • Remove the screws from your switch and pull out the existing switch to look at the wires.
  • If you see a white wire (or group of them), it is VERY likely that you have a neutral.

The only way to be absolutely sure that you have found a neutral wire is to check the voltage (110V/120V) between the white wire and the "hot" (usually black in color) wire in the box. In a standard switch/dimmer, the "hot" is using one of the two wires connected to the switch.

The Treatlife single pole smart light switches (4 pack) came with everything needed (except tools) and was packaged well. These are cETL listed. I had no issues installing and registering the light switch to the app (I used 'CE Smart' since I am already using it for my other smart devices) and it was instantly recognised by Alexa as Alexa was connected to CE Smart for my other devices already. This switch uses 2.4GHz WiFi only (like most other switches). The switch can be operated via the CE Smart app, the Alexa app, and by voice control. (It also works with my Google assistant). It does not dim, but it has basically no lag operating it via the app. The app (CE Smart) also supports timers and events with this switch. As for how hard this is to install, it's mostly like any other smart switch, it really depends on your house wiring, as it does require a neutral wire. The only possible annoying requirement is that you can not swap line and load wires like you can on the Kasa switches (with Kasa the line and load terminals are interchangeable). This means that if you can't figure out which black wire is line (power) and load (goes to the light) just by looking at how it is wired you have to turn on the power and test with a meter, which could be dangerous. Note: If you have more than one switch in the wall box, the line is usually the same black wire that goes to all of the switches (shared), and the load is usually the single black wire per switch. I had enough room in my wall box for the switch (including the wires and other marettes that were already in the box). I had no issues mounting it with the LED on the top (I think that it looks better this way when beside regular switches in the 'off' position). The LED flashes different colours during setup and stays white when your light is off (off when your light is on). The instructions seem to be well done and it comes with stickers to label your wires. Photos of the wires before you take things apart could also be helpful. I will update my review if I have problems with any of the four switches, but for now this is 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 and fully recommend. I hope that you found this review helpful.

    Can't for the life of me figure out why TreatLife set up their switches the way they did, but the little "marker" light on these switches is on when the switch is on and off when the switch is off! This seems completely backwards to me as that marker is great for helping you locate the switch when it is pitch black with nearly every other brand. I do NOT need an indicator to tell me the light is on..I can pretty much tell that by that fact that, well, there is light.

    A firmware upgrade would be really nice TreatLife to change this behavior!

    I would not recommend mixing this brand in with other brands of smart switches you have as this little quirk quickly becomes annoying (at least it did to me.

    Otherwise, this switch works well and was fairly easy to install (it is a tight fit). Works with out issue with Alexa. Longevity is unknown at this point as they have only been in for a week. The indicator light may be enough to make me "switch" them out. Will have to wait and see how much it continues to annoy.
