FE 50mm F1.8 Lens
This 50mm Full-frame E-mount Fast Prime Lens offers a focal length that is perfect for portraiture and a range of other subjects. A bright F1.8 maximum aperture, 7-blade circular aperture and aspherical element deliver impressive image quality with beautifully defocussed background bokeh, all in a surprisingly compact and lightweight package
Features
Smooth defocusing
The F1.8 maximum aperture opens up a world of beautiful prime-lens bokeh. The large F1.8 maximum aperture is also an advantage when shooting night scenes or in dimly lit interiors. When used with an α series camera body that features in-body image stabilization, even greater low-light capability enables handheld capture of clear images in dark scenes without having to use excessively high ISO sensitivity.
7-blade circular aperture
The 7-blade circular aperture maximizes the beauty of large-aperture prime-lens, contributing to impressive images in which the subject stands out against a smoothly defocused background bokeh.
Refined optical performance
The lens has an innovative optical design to achieve clear, high-quality images by effectively minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration. A double-gauss configuration effectively suppresses field curvature and distortion, while a precisely placed aspherical element controls spherical aberration and coma for excellent optical characteristics right out to the image periphery. An aspherical element in a new optical design controls all types of aberration (spherical, coma, distortion), rendering the subject with superior sharpness.
Features
Solid Durability
Designed for reliability in a wide range of environments, the metal mount adds a sophisticated feel as well as solid durability.
Fast, agile focusing
Fast and accurate autofocus is achieved with a newly developed DC motor focus actuator system which drives all lens groups for optimum focus precision and speed as well as quiet operation.

Best kit lens for portrait

- Reviewed in Canada on January 18, 2019Verified PurchasePROBABLY THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK SONY FE LENS YOU CAN BUY!! It is also the CHEAPEST SONY FE mount lens money can buy brand new at the moment.
Tested with a Sony A7R ii and A7R iii
Sure , it is not the sharpest wide open at f1.8, but step it down to f2.8 you get really sharp center.
Step it down farther to f4 to f5.6 and Oh My Gosh, this lens is on par in sharpness, barrel distortion and colors with lens that are $1000+ at fraction of the price ($350)
No kidding, at f4.0 to f5.6, the center is RAZOR SHARP, as well as the extreme corners being pretty darn sharp.
There is a slight vignette near the extreme corners wide open, and disappears complete you you step down to f4.0 or lower.
Now people complaining about the autofocus.. I have tested this one 2 Sony bodies, the A7R II and the A7R III, and yes, it is just a hair faster on the A7R III, but barely. Overall, I am more than satisfied with this lens’ autofocus performance, even in low light situations (such as a night club). Though I have yet to try the autofocus in pitch black, but honestly, who the heck is going to shoot in pitch black anyways with autofocus lol.
Now on to build quality. The lens mount is made of metal (steel), but the entire barrel of the lens is completely made of plastic. The quality of the plastic is not that bad, definitely a big step in plastic quality than the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II (nifty fifty)
Plastics is solid, and has no creek. The focus ring is pretty tight for the price, and coated in a rubberized coating. Feels pretty good.
The focus ring tightness reminds me of my Fujinon XF 18-55mm “kit” Len that I have on my XT-1. That Fujinon lens is much more expensive in retail, around $700 to 800, and build much better (all metal barrel and rings), but the tightness of the focus ring is very similar to this cheaper Sony FE 50mm f1.8
Finally, on to the accessories. Well accessory,, which is only a lens hood and that is it.
The lens hood is a full hood, and not a petal hood, expected for a fix focal length prime lens.
The quality Of the hood is very good considering it’s plastic. The plastic use on the hood is quite thick, and does not give much when squeeze. Also the hood is much larger than the actual front element in diameter, and it is EXTREMELY GOOD since using a threaded circular polarizer filter will be a breeze, without tak8ng the hood off nor smudging finger prints all over the filter when you try to make adjustments. There is ample amount of space to get your index finger to adjust the filter.
Overall this is the best deal you can get for a Sony full frame FE mount camera.
If you shoot in crop mode, this lens becomes an equivalent of 75mm prime, and 50mm in full frame. Technically it is a 2 prime lens for the price of one.
You see, it is WIN WIN situation, and your wallet will thank you.

- Reviewed in Canada on August 1, 2023Verified PurchaseIt’s a cheap prime lens but not satisfied with it. Maybe for beginners it would ok.
- Reviewed in Canada on January 1, 2021Verified PurchaseThis lens is much better than the early ratings suggest. Just got mine and I'm very impressed with sharpness, auto focus and overall build quality. The focus motor does make more noise than usual. Other than that, with firmware version 03 it performs as well as any of my many other lenses including the Sigma 30mm f1.4 which is highly regarded. Don't be concerned with the early reviews of this lens. Every Sony FF user should have one of these and it also works great on my a6000. Great value and highly recommended.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 31, 2019Verified PurchaseI have great things to say about this lens.
I love the picture quality, and my clients have been impressed with the quality of my photos.
Aside from the lens hunting for autofocus, which has happened a lot, (sometimes it won't focus when I want it to)
other than that, I love this lens, and am considering buying more lenses in the sony family.
- Reviewed in Canada on July 25, 2019Verified Purchaseits an affordable lens that definitely gets the job done, I am hobbyist so this lens is perfect for my everyday shooting obviously for a pro this wouldn't cut it , but if your like me and love shooting for fun and dont have the money this is 100% perfect for you.

- Reviewed in Canada on September 5, 2019Verified PurchaseA really nice lens for the money. It's compact and light weight and produces excellent photos on the Sony A7iii. I read reviews about the slow focus, but it's honestly not bad and good enough for me!
- Reviewed in Canada on December 2, 2021Verified PurchaseResolution on F1.8 is jagged and pixelated and doesn't compete with even vintage lenses, except for contrast. Contrast and color are good. It's really more of a starter lens, but I recommended the Macro cousin as a much sharper and more versatile lens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Um lente espetacular para retratos!
Primeiro, vamos falar do bokeh.
Boa captura!

5.0 out of 5 stars Full frame super consigliato
Verified PurchaseObiettivo compatto, leggero e ben costruito. Consigliato.
