    Ich wurde im Jahr 1990 geboren und kann somit kein Fan der ersten Stunde sein, wenn es um das 1957 gegründete US-amerikanische Duo Simon & Garfunkel geht. Aber ich bin schon in jungen Jahren auf viele Klassiker dieser beiden Musiker gestoßen, weshalb ich mir irgendwann dieses Best-of gekauft habe. Und für Leute wie mich, die mit Verspätung zur Musik von Paul Simon und Art Garfunkel gefunden haben, ist diese Platte optimal. Diese Kompilation hat so gut wie keine Schwächen, auch wenn ich die Leute, die sich mehr Material oder Bonussongs erhofft haben, verstehen kann. Man muss jedoch berücksichtigen, dass dieses Best-of im Jahr 1972 veröffentlicht wurde und somit schon einige Jahre auf dem Buckel hat.

    Was soll man zu diesem mehrfach ausgezeichneten (und noch häufiger gecoverten) Klassiker großartig schreiben? Der Song, der im Jahr 1967 für den Film "Die Reifeprüfung" verwendet wurde, ist ein toller und lockerer Einstieg in diese Kompilation, die auf diese Art und Weise sofort Pluspunkte sammelt.

    Dieser Song liegt hier in einer Liveversion vor. Verglichen mit den anderen Klassikern auf diesem Album hinkt dieses teilweise recht uninspirierte und lyrisch ungewöhnlich dürftige Liebeslied deutlich hinterher. Nur die wunderschöne Stimme von Art Garfunkel schafft es, den Song zu retten.

    Hierbei handelt es sich um einen weiteren Klassiker des erfolgreichen Duos. Trotzdem muss ich zugeben, dass mir dieser Song im Vorfeld kein Begriff war und die verhältnismäßig lange Laufzeit von über fünf Minuten häufig dazu geführt hat, dass ich ihn übersprungen habe. Mit der Zeit hat sich dieser Track jedoch zu einem meiner Favoriten entwickelt. Ein wunderschönes Lied, das kaum harmonischer sein könnte, auch wenn es sich am Ende ein kleines bisschen zieht.

Die meisten Lieder von Simon & Garfunkel bestechen durch eine authentische Melodramatik, von daher ist dieser lockere Track eine willkommene Abwechslung. Leider geht der Song nur knapp zwei Minuten. Kaum hat man sich auf seine entspannte Atmosphäre eingelassen, ist er auch schon wieder vorbei.

    Leider wurde dem Debütalbum von Simon & Garfunkel praktisch keine Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt: Vom Erstlingswerk des Duos wurde nur dieser Song berücksichtigt, und selbst das ist nur mit Einschränkung zu genießen, da er Bestandteil zweier Alben ist. Aber das ändert natürlich nichts daran, dass es sich einmal mehr um einen echten Klassiker handelt. Für mich gehört "The Sound Of Silence" nicht nur zu den besten Songs von Simon & Garfunkel, sondern auch zu den besten Songs der 1960er-Jahre.

    Hierbei handelt es sich um einen ambivalenten Song: Die lockere Melodie und der fröhliche Gesang erinnern zwar an "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)", aber der Songtext ist eher traurig, da es hier um eine Person geht, die sämtliche Gefühle ausgeschaltet hat. Trotz oder gerade wegen dieser recht ungewöhnlichen Mischung ist der Track aber ziemlich harmonisch.

    Es ist bemerkenswert, dass zwei Musiker, die sich mit den Jahren so voneinander entfernt haben, dass man fast schon von einer Abneigung sprechen kann, mal so perfekt miteinander harmonieren konnten. In einer Zeit, in der selbsternannte Gesangstalente ihre vor Autotune triefende Musik auf sozialen Netzwerken hochladen und als Kunst bezeichnen, höre ich mir solche Songs nochmal lieber an. Ein unfassbar schönes Lied, das gleichzeitig zu den emotionalsten Stücken von Simon & Garfunkel gehört.

    Ich finde es gut, dass man bei dieser Kompilation zumindest größtenteils darauf geachtet hat, dass sich betrübte Lieder mit fröhlicheren Stücken abwechseln. Nach dem doch ziemlich schwermütigen Song "Scarborough Fair / Canticle" begrüßt man die lockere Stimmung, die bei "Homeward Bound" aufkommt. Außerdem lässt sich hier einmal mehr feststellen, dass Paul Simon und Art Garfunkel wunderbar miteinander harmonieren.

    Noch so ein Klassiker von Simon & Garfunkel, der für sich selbst spricht. Wenn man die Musikbibliothek der 1970er-Jahre auf eine Auswahl von zehn Liedern beschränken würde, dürfte sie diesen Song nicht missen lassen. Hervorragende Lyrics treffen hier auf eine dermaßen schöne Melodie und einen so makellosen Gesang, dass man sich insgeheim noch ein paar Strophen wünscht.

    Als ich den Songtitel gelesen habe, dachte ich insgeheim schon wieder an irgendeine patriotische Nummer. Aber weit gefehlt: Simon & Garfunkel schaffen es, Amerika in wenigen Versen auf eine ironische und doch realistische Weise zu beschreiben, die nur wenigen Künstlern gelingt. Leider geht dieser Song trotzdem ein wenig unter. Sogar auf dieser Kompilation wirkt er stellenweise wie ein Fremdkörper.

    [12] El Condor Pasa (If I Could) | Album: Bridge Over Troubled Water
    Dieses Lied haben wir einem glücklichen Zufall zu verdanken: Im Jahr 1965 trat Paul Simon in Paris auf und hörte dort den Song "Paso Del Condor" von der Musikgruppe Los Incas, die dort zeitgleich spielten. Er suchte das Gespräch mit dieser Band und erzählte ihnen, dass er vorhabe, eine englische Version dieses Musikstücks aufzunehmen. Paul Simon fragte nach der Herkunft des Songs und erfuhr, dass es sich um ein altes peruanisches Volkslied handelt. Der Rest ist Geschichte.

    Normalerweise ziehe ich schönen Liedern, die meiner Meinung nach zu kurz sind, mindestens einen Stern ab. Bei "Bookends Theme" habe ich jedoch davon abgesehen. Trotz der sehr kurzen Laufzeit von nicht einmal anderthalb Minuten handelt es sich meiner Ansicht nach um einen nahezu perfekten Song.

Man darf allerdings auch nicht vergessen, dass die Songs des erfolgreichen Duos alle schon etwas älter sind, weshalb der eine oder andere Griff in die schlichte Klischeekiste alles andere als verwunderlich ist. Immerhin sorgt die unbekümmerte Melodie für ein paar Pluspunkte und für einen lockeren Abschluss dieser tollen Kompilation.
