Product description

The VideoMic GO is extremely user-friendly as there's no switches or battery to worry about - just plug in and go. All microphones need power however, and in the case of the VideoMic GO it is drawing a very small voltage commonly referred to as "plug-in power" from your camera (or recording device) via the audio cable. Plug-in power has long been a standard for camera manufacturers, and so the VideoMic GO is compatible with the vast majority of cameras in the market. While this is by no means a complete list, following is a list of cameras that we can confirm do not support the VideoMic GO. Please refer to the specifications of your particular camera for information on whether it supplies power via the microphone jack: Nikon D7000, Canon T3/1100D, Canon C100, C300, C500, Canon VIXIA HFR500, Canon VIXIA HFG20, HFG30, Canon XA-10, Canon Vixia G10, Canon Legria HF G25.

If you are experiencing issues getting your VideoMic GO to operate with a camera not listed above, firstly be sure to update your camera's firmware to the latest version (available from your camera manufacturer's website). Sensitivity -35.0dB re 1 Volt/Pascal (17.80mV @ 94 dB SPL) +/- 2 dB @ 1kHz

It looks great, seems sturdy and built well, and was so easy to start using! I have filmed two YouTube videos now and the audio quality has improved SO MUCH with this mic! Great purchase for the price. and 100% would buy again!

I was really unsure about which mic to order. I had heard so many good things about Rode so I knew I wanted one of theirs, but which one? I ended up deciding on the VideoMic Go since it fit my budget and is easy enough to bring with me when travelling and such. I use it for Youtube videos, both talking to the camera and interview style shoots. The mic works quite well for these applications.

I found that when editing my videos, there is a static noise in the background. I don't know if that's an issue with my settings on the DSLR or if the mic is just really sensitive and is picking up background noise. Either way, it's fairly easy to get rid of during editing. The sound quality is worth the extra effort. Voices are crisp and clear.

So far this mic has really impressed me! Admittedly all audio recordings I've done have been inside so far, so in regards to anyone complaining about it picking up wind noises, I cannot confirm that. But for my purposes, which so far is exclusive to recording indoors, I have literally no complaints. I use this on my Sony A6300 and it is noticeably better than my cheap Neewer 36cm mic I had previously. This mic would for sure mount into any mirrorless or DSLR camera hot shoe mount. And although I am recording on my tripod I can see how the design for the plastic that holds up the mic would benefit to those who are going to be recording while the camera is bumping around. It is a very well-built product and I know that Rode (Australian made) is a quality brand, so I was happy to pay the price for this mic. It's worth it. Even the packaging was nice. You get what you pay for, and for those looking for a good quality mic, look no further!

Picks up sound quite well, but seems to be more responsive in the mid to higher frequency ranges. The only thing that disturbs me is the vibration isolator. It feels very delicate and its durability for transport is a concern. I suggest a hard case for it that will cradle the mic and prevent it from being compressed. I purchased this because the Canon T6s has its microphones positioned right next to the lens mount (right next to the lens motor). My sigma 28-300mm lens is horribly noisy when the servo is active. This eliminates *most* of the lens noise. Canon also seems to have issues with low level white noise when using an additional mic. Setting the attenuator to on clears up most of it. I'm using it with a custom combiner cable to allow a wireless mic to be used at the same time and it works great. I was asked to film a funeral last minute and 鶹's one day shipping came through.

I bought this mic and a deadcat wind muff. When I listened to the playback after filming, it still had the annoying wind noise. I couldn't figure out why. At first I blamed the deadcat, but then I realized it wasn't the deadcat at all, it was the back of the video mic where the jack input is. If you blow ever so slightly at the back of the mic even with a wind muff, you will hear the wind.

So, if they could seal up the back a bit better, this would be a great mic.

Just perfect, nothing to complain at all! This will up your game on the audio side for sure and is at least half the price of an active mic! Super light and compact, there is zero noticeable weight added to the camera while in use and it doesn't obstruct the field of view (didn't try with a wide angle lens). There's a reason why you see this mic everywhere, it's a must have that will always travel with my camera for sure!

If you own a DSLR and like to do run and gun filming this product has to be in your bag. Do keep in mind that at the end of the day it's a directional microphone mounted on your camera and such a devise has inherent limitations. If you're doing an interview, it cannot match up to the low noise clarity of a lavalier but if you have one of these mikes fixed on your camera and your subject is close enough, you'll definitely pick up good audio given that your ambiance noise is not too high. Otherwise with proper manual leveling, you can pick up good general ambiance sounds with your footage. Point-wise, he advantages are the following
    1. You don't have to go through syncing your audio in post
    2. It's light
    3. The connecting cord is good quality
    4. The Rycote designed mount is just super.
    5. A camera mounted directional mike has inherent limits so this price makes good sense

One problem, the RODE sheath does not prevent nasty wind noises if you're recording outdoors even if wind conditions are slight. For such conditions, you have to take care. I'd definitely buy the RODE Video Mic Go DEAD CAT ( I wish they'd call it by some other name). Sadly at the moment, I don't see it selling in India.

In short, it's a must have and an amazing buy if you know what you can get out of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great budget video mic
Reviewed in Australia on February 15, 2021

This is a great budget video mic. You can get cheaper ones and I did try a cheaper one. Firstly it's a tenfold improvement on the in-camera mic, it's seriously better. It does have some downsides which I'll get into further down.

The built in camera mic on most cameras has all the sound quality of an asthmatic mouse whispering in the next room, while a high school rock band plays 'Smells like teen spirit' for the first time next door before artistic differences cause them to fight and break up 10 mins later, before reforming for a comeback tour. I'm not sure where I was going with that analogy.

It also beats the cheaper ones by a wide margin, like Richmond Football Club playing Nunawading Football Club. Google Nunawading FC, also if anyone has a Nunawading FC guernsey for sale get in touch. The step up in performance of this from my cheaper budget mic was just great, in both sound but especially build quality.

I know Rode have a lot more products that have a seriously increased sound recording quality over this one but they also come with an increased price to match that quality. So you won't be getting studio quality but you will get a mic much better than some of the cheaper stuff out there, especially if you're just an enthusiast like myself and have a budget that suits being a hobbyist. Maybe I had a dud cheap one but I did see an immediate improvement over my previous one.

    What are the problems.
Firstly you can get some hiss, especially in low noise environments where it seems its almost trying to hunt for any ambient background sounds but this could be just my cameras sound processing. To beat this, I lowered my dB levels in camera and set my sound settings to manual to stop the camera from adjusting anything. Just like my cheaper one this removed the hiss but to a greater extent. You'll need to play with your settings to work out what's best for your specific camera.

The second problem you will encounter is interference from radio signals. I'm talking WiFi, phone, certain lights etc or any similar source. You can manage this interference by turning them off or a simple solution I use is to put a bit of copper shielding tape on the back of the mic. You can get this tape from hardware stores, electronic stores, guitar stores and yes even 鶹. Even cheaper, a bit of aluminium foil will help.

Another thing I suspect may be causing this is the cable. This cable also powers the mic and is the input to the camera. I suspect the coiled red cable is generating an EMF source of interference. Perhaps the cable is shielded but I doubt it very much. I haven't as yet done a simple cable swap, this may improve things but I'm honestly not sure if the tiny current changes in the audio signal would have any measurable or noticeable impact on generating EMF. I hope not because the coiled red cable looks absolutely cool.

Another thing that I always do, if I'm recording someone speaking is to try to flex the shock mount so the mic points to the upper chest of the person rather than the mouth. Basically you generally point the camera at someone's head when recording them and the mic tends to point at their head or above. This will mean if they move or turn their head sound quality changes or you may be pointing at a sound source behind them, making you believe your mic is crap. Pointing it at their chest will reduce this effect significantly.

    To get great sound
    • Reduce dB levels in camera and set sound to manual
    • Some shielding tape helps to reduce RFI interference
    • The cable may be a source.
    • Pay attention to where exactly your mic is pointed.
    • Oh and use a dead cat / wind shield they also help on ambient background noise.

    I'm getting the sound of a $250+ mic on a $80+ mic.
