- Reviewed in Canada on April 19, 2025Verified PurchaseAnother great product from Rode. I have several other mic’s from them and an entire wireless mic system. Been extremely please with any Rode product I have purchased and this one is no different and it solved some of my audio challenges in the areas we film in.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 23, 2025Verified PurchaseIt is the right product to buy.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 29, 2023Verified PurchaseYou can't really go wrong with Rode. I swapped out my VideoMic Pro+ for this NTG option, and I've enjoyed the upgrade in audio! I do a lot of run-and-gun documentary work, so having an on-camera mic that can capture usable audio is crucial! I'd suggest bringing down the gain on your camera and upping the gain on the mic for the best results (in my experience). The shock mount seems to do a pretty good job of avoiding the noise of the mic moving around, so that's a plus. I just wish that the shock mount was black, not red.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 2, 2024Verified PurchaseThe mic is one of the best for beginners like me giving everything you could ask for in a small form factor
- Reviewed in Canada on February 17, 2022Verified PurchaseAfter watching dozens of YouTube reviews of all kinds of different shotgun mics for DSLR cameras to educate me for my purchase, I eventually decided to grab this one as I thought it would be a high quality mic that would alone give me high sound quality right out of the box as soon as I attach it to my camera and hit record. I was somewhat naïve to think that.
Not only this mic, but just about any mic you choose will not significantly or even somewhat improve your audio quality by just attaching it to your camera and hitting record. The room you're recording in will need to be acoustically treated to maximize sound quality of your audio and you will likely need to edit the sound in post processing in order to get the best sounding audio from the mic.
It doesn't really matter if you buy a $100 mic or a $2000 mic, the results will likely sound about the same if you're recording your video in a room that is not acoustically treated, if your camera audio settings are not correctly adjusted, or if you haven't done any post processing on your audio in Final Cut or Premiere Pro, or another video editing software like that.
This is a good mic, it definitely helped me with being able to increase the booming effects of my voice, increasing the gain of the sound of my voice as it was picked up, and increasing the volume of my voice, however the mic on it's own likely won't help your audio quality become cleaner, more refined, and reduce background noise without extra work on your part.
Was this mic worth it? I still think so. With some solid video and sound editing, and understanding what camera settings are needed to get the best audio possible, and understanding the mic's audio settings and knowing which settings would be best for the sound of your own voice; you can get some great results with this.

That being said...
I ordered this mic new from 鶹 and paid full price. Took a few days to ship, but when it finally arrived the box itself looked like someone was trying to rip into the box with their bare hands and then sat on it. It was crushed, ripped up and dirty. All the components in the box were loose and scuffed up, falling right out upon unboxing. Upon further inspection I noticed damages.
I proceeded to complain to 鶹 with them stating they would be give me a refund upon them receiving the package. Once I returned the package they told me that because this item was over $300, the refund will take 30 days and potentially more... Which is ridiculous considering it was completely damaged before being wrapped up and sent to me.
Also worth noting they do sell used versions on this mic, so I'm a little baffled that I went out of my way to pay full price for a new mic and was still sent literal garbage.
I went to a Røde authorized Henry's and picked up this mic in store. Unboxing the product from Henry's was a much better experience. Apart from a single loose cable, everything was packed nice and secure, no scuffed marks whatsoever. I got a chance to see what the product is supposed to look like out of the box and realized just how messed up the 鶹 purchase was.
I still have not received a refund for the purchase.
TLDR:
Great mic. You should definetly buy it but please DO NOT purchase expensive products like this from 鶹. They will send you damaged products, feed you lame excuses and hold your money for longer than necessary.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 28, 2022Verified PurchaseThis is one of the better value for quality shotgun mics on the market. With this mic, you can get great high quality sound as long as you understand some of the basics of mics and sound. This is more geared towards moderate to advanced users to really get the most out of it. But new users can learn the basics quickly too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compared to Rode NT-USB, has less echo and more presence
Verified PurchaseCompared Zoom H1n vs Rode NT-USB vs. Rode VideoMic NTG. Placed them arm-length away (about 60cm from mouth), and read a passage. Then listened carefully.
1) Zoom H1n: Most echo, and highest noise floor. Knob was set to 9.5.
2) Rode NT-USB: 2x more presence then Zoom H1n, 2x less echo then Zoom H1n, 2x less noise floor, and more pleasant to (less harsh).
3) Rode VideoMic NTG: 1.5 more presence then Rode NT-USB, 1.5x less echo then Rode NT-USB, and 0.5 less noise floor. Same pleasantness to listen to as Rode NT-USB.
Meaning what? I've packed away the Rode NT-USB (as it's huge), and defaulted to to this VideoMic NTG as it's 1.5x better. Yes, it's negligible difference (for all purposes, their sound quality is the same), but since this NTG is so small, it's a lot more convenient to place top of a device (such as camera), then having a huge-heavy Rode NT-USB taking significant desk space.
Best about VideoMic NTG: From a massive distance of 60cm from mouth, that it's able to make voice sound as if speaking only 10cm from a mic, is most impressive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excelente

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than I expcted
Verified PurchaseThis one is a good no-nonsense shotgun microphone you can get very good pickup even if it's 5 feet away..... I like that it auto switches itself on and off.... so one thing I don't have to worry while recording videos.... battery life also has been great.
If you have a budget for this I can recommend it, in-fact I also have the Rode Wireless Go kit but I am mostly preferring this one now.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is super-versatile and has worked great with everything
Verified PurchaseI love this mic! Sounds good, low noise, very directional. Ever since getting it I've used it for all my videoconferences. I have it on a mic boom just above my head about 12-18 inches away and it sounds very nice and clean. Allowed me to stop needing to wear headphones during conferences, I could just have the audio coming out of speakers.
Aside from this, you can use the mic as a USB device with a PC or you can plug in an analog TRS or TRRS cable, it will automatically detect the configuration of the jack so you can use it with almost any device.
I use it as a USB mic with my PC, in analog mode with a Sony A7R4 and have also used it as a USB-C mic with an iPad Pro and with an iIphone through Apples analog adapter. All worked and had great sound.
The directionality of the mic will let you put it just below or just above you out-of-shot and still get good sound. It's not magic though, for best quality the rule with mics is "closer is better" You will probably get best results 1-2 feet away. Try to get closer if the person is a quiet talker.
There are a few minor flaws with the USB mode. One is that the gain control knob has no effect in USB mode, you have to adjust volume levels with PC software which is not as convenient. Also the "safety channel" feature doesn't work in USB mode (this is where it records normal audio on one channel and the other channel 20db quieter, so you can recover audio in post production if it suddenly gets too loud and clips). Not sure why these don't work but it would be great if Rode could do a firmware update to fix it.
Also the mic is supposed to work with an iPhone through a USB-C to lightning cable. I tried this with a high quality cable I have and it didn't work. Rode support says you have to use their UCB-C to lightning cable. Not sure why this is, maybe they have some active electronics in their cable. I just know I tried several good quality USB-C->lightning cables I had and they did not work.
