- Reviewed in Canada on December 8, 2022Verified PurchaseI purchased a few types of green beans online to try out the roaster. I don't really think that purchasing green beans online and roasting them is saving us any money. However, it is neat to play with my own types of roasts and mixes. So far the coffee has been very tasty. The roasting machine is easy to use. The first batch was burned to a crisp so I learned to not use it on the highest setting. Now it is a matter of finding different types of beans and playing with different mixtures and roasts to see what we like the best. This machine is certainly worth the money and is easy to use.
- Reviewed in Canada on August 20, 2021Verified PurchaseBelow is my original review, downgrading to a 3 star, item has failed. Like it so much however that I bought another in hopes it lasts longer? The rotating bean spreader motor quit... Element still works but it will burn the beans without the spreader/rotating agitator. Thought mane I could get anther motor but it's from China and had a 3-sided non-tamper type screen head making it difficult to swap out? So now have a new beam roaster and it is working so far...
My 3rd roaster... Make my own espresso blend for over 10 yrs now ... This was by far the least expensive... Used 4 times no issue... Like my espresso beans to be roasted till the 2nd crack just starts, very quiet so easy to hear the Bean crack!
- Reviewed in Canada on June 2, 2021Verified PurchaseI use this to roast coffee, previous;y i used a fresh roaster, but they only roasted about 500ml of coffee, created a lot of smoke, were hard to maintain and clean and they cost 380 cad. i bought this to see how it would perform, as i loved that it did a large amount at once and it stirred the coffee beans as they roasted like a commercial roaster, this in theory should be a better method than hot air. This to my delight worked really well, it roasted 3/5 lb of coffee evenly to a vienna roast, using max heat in 15mins. it can do super light, to dark as night roasts, the unit emits about 1/3 of the smoke of the fresh roast too, i'm really happy with this, lets hope the unit is durable, but at this price, it's much easier to replace every year or 2 than the almost $400 roaster. this does a fantastic job. i love it. good buy :)
- Reviewed in Canada on September 2, 2023Verified PurchaseThe product stopped working within 2 months. Crap product.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 28, 2021Verified PurchaseThis machine is as advertised, except for the removable blades to wash.
Looks ok, and seems durable, if used properly.
Cover is vented.
Washing is mostly for the cover, it needs soap and hot water to clean.
The bowl is much harder to clean, since the mixing blades can't be removed without tools, and risk of damaging the unit, and the plate is not removable.
Not as described in the add.
But it can simply be wiped clean when warm, with a damp cloth, unless you are dark roasting, then the oil will make it really difficult.
The method of use is sorely missing, so I had to do a lot of research and experimentation.
Update
After fully testing this machine, using at least 5 pounds of various bean types since my purchase.
I have abandoned the unit for coffee purposes.
Although I was able to get nice even medium roasts, I have not once liked the coffee.
It always has the same bad taste, like chimney creosote, no mater what bean I used.
I realized to late, that the thick smoke that makes a mess of the lid, and smells up the house, is also on the beans.
This makes them taste bitter and weird and can't be healthy, since most smokes are carcinogenic and at very least bad for you..
Anyone roasting darker then Medium or City would probably not notice it as much, since dark roasts mostly taste that way anyways.
I also started getting canker sores, in my mouth.
I switched to a Nostalgia popcorn machine, after reading some instructions online from Mary's.
I'm using 70gr batches of Colombian Supremo, and I found.
~ 8m for medium light roast.
~ 10m for medium.
~ 12m to 14m for medium dark depending on how dark I want.
First crack starts around 5m and ends around 8m
All 3 roasts levels, end with 58gr of very consistently perfect roasts, without any bad batches.
I'm now enjoying every cup, and I'm no longer worried about wasting beans or killing myself.
At least not by roasting, and drinking coffee.
I would not recommend using the hotplate roasters for coffee, and if you are stop now, before you need a kidney transplant or worse.
That's my opinion.
Now it's time for a great cup of coffee.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 13, 2022Verified PurchaseA really fine coffee roasting machine, specially for the reasonable price. Much better than my previous method, using, a hand-cranked popcorn popper on a BBQ side-burner. Need to keep an eye on the roasting as it nears the end point as it's easy to over-roast the beans, turning them into charcoal. The beans will increase in volume (this is normal) and shortly thereafter they will be at dark city roast and ready to dump out and cool down. I use two large inexpensive woks for this, pouring the beans back and forth while outside, any breeze will take way the chaff. The glass cover is easy to clean using warm water and dish soap, there does not seem to be any oil accumulating on the teflon base, which I wipe down with a soft dishcloth after each roasting session. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 13, 2024Verified PurchaseI loved this machine until it suddenly quit after 18 months, with using it every 1-2 weeks. I may buy another one and see if I have better luck.
