RL-SPBS Battery Backup System
Peace of Mind
During inclement weather is when you need your sump pump the most. Unfortunately this is also the time when power failures are most likely to happen. When the electricity goes out, enjoy PEACE OF MIND knowing that your Red Lion RL-SPBS Battery Backup Sump System can provide hours of operation to help keep your basement dry.
The battery charger maintains a maximum battery charge and includes built-in overcharge protection to prevent damage to the battery and protects against reverse polarity, short circuits and input overloads. Indicator lights on the charger include the following:
- power indicator
- charging indicator
- full charge indicator
- Fault (error) indicator
Diaphragm Switch Included
The reliable DIAPHRAGM SWITCH is designed to work with the 12-Volt pump and battery and activates when the water pressure on the switch increases. As the water level rises, the water pressure presses against the switch and compresses a diaphragm inside the switch. When the diaphragm is compressed the switch turns on, when the pressure eases off of the diaphragm the pump turns off.
Junction Box and Alarm
The Red Lion RL-SPBS charger MONITORS and CHARGES the BATTERY when required.
An AUDIBLE ALARM, located on the junction box, alerts the homeowner when the system requires attention and can easily be silenced. When silenced an LED light indicates when the battery operated sump system is running and that the alarm has been disabled.

Product description
The Red Lion RL-SPBS battery back-up sump system provides emergency protection from water damage due to primary sump pump failure or power outages. The enhanced system features a diaphragm switch that requires no maintenance and offers reliable performance. The switch activates when the water level rises to 13.5 inches and shuts off when the water falls to 9 inches (if installed at approximately 10 inches from the bottom of the sump.) The pump has a 19' shut-off and can deliver water as follows:
3240 gph at 0' lift
2655 gph at 5' lift
1755 gph at 10' lift
The following is included with this system: 12-volt pump with 9' lead wires, battery charger unit and junction box, battery case, 1.5-inch street elbow for 12-volt pump, flexible coupling for 12-volt pump's discharge, check valve for 12-volt pump, diaphragm switch to control 12-volt pump, red jumper wire (positive); black jumper wire (negative) and 4 cable ties.
This system requires the following components NOT INCLUDED:
- 12VDC deep cycle battery - BCI Group 27, rated 85 - 140 Ah, lead-acid or AGM
- 115-volt primary pump (vertical switch type pumps work best as they don't require as much room as tethered float pumps such as RL-33SC, RL-50SC, RL-SC33V, RL-SC50V)
- Check valve for 115-volt primary pump
- 1.5-inch drain pipe from household plumbing
- 1.5-inch DWV Wye discharge pipe
- 1.5-inch SWV street elbow H-SPG 45°
- additional fittings may be required to fit existing piping
Please note the pump's performance has recently been updated and this page accurately reflects the current pump's performance. The Installation Manual, labels, and carton artwork may not match the performance stated for this pump as they are in the process of being updated.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 3, 2025Verified PurchaseInstalled the unit as per directions. Right out of the box the “diaphragm switch” which turns the pump on and off is faulty. At first it didn’t work at all set at many levels below the water. Then one day, after giving up and trying to communicate with the supplier and have a new switch sent, I heard the alarm downstairs. Went to find out that the pump was running and there was no water in the basin. Nothing except unplugging the switch or the pump made it stop.
What a terrible experience. Still trying to contact someone to have a new switch sent as that would be much easier than taking it all apart and sending it back for a replacement. Today is May 3 2025 still no reply.
Frustrating
- Reviewed in Canada on November 15, 2024Verified PurchaseI haven't had to use it yet but I installed it ,tested it , the pressure switch is only good for 10inches of water to activate the pump . the pump pulls 14.5 amp the micro switch is rated for 1amp,
I had to use belch pump switc 20amp DC , time will tell
- Reviewed in Canada on February 5, 2024I installed mine about 2 weeks after posting this review so I cannot comment about the longevity of the unit. There are aspects of its simplicity I like while other aspects I question on the reliability. As example the type of float works off of pressure and has a rubber diaphragm which requires to be fully submerged to work. I wonder how many years before the rubber starts to deteriorate. Also the float switch needs to be submerged at least 3 inches below the water line on where you place the zip tie which is not outlined in the instructions.
One thing I do like is pump and float switch seem to be easily replaceable with a generic bilge pump or float switch should they die if your handy enough to do the work.
I would recommend to pair this with something like a level sense device to ensure full monitoring.
Overall initial impressions are good but only time will tell if it was worth getting this over the more expensive Zoller or liberty pumps.

Verified PurchaseGot the backup pump, set it up, despite having voltage in the battery and correctly connected to the corresponding posts, the charger, while powered on, doesn’t reflect that it is charging, that the battery is full, or a fault, and the switch can’t be triggered. You get what you pay for.
