I read a lot about pre-amps, and MC and MM cartridges before buying. MY turntable, a B & O, has very low output, and uses an MMC cartridge (a rare bird). The Pyle was a good price, so I gave it a try, even though I wasn't sure it would be able to figure out what was coming from the turntable and respond as it would to any other setup. I wasn't really surprised that I had to crank the volume higher to get it to be decently loud. That probably wouldn't be an issue with a regular turntable. The good news is, even having to crank the volume because of the phono cartridge, there was only a little background noise, even when I was playing a Keith Jarrett album, which is very quiet music. And it certainly is working to what would be most people's satisfaction. It wasn't absolutely identical to what I remembered (I'm really fussy), though, so I went and bought the Rolls VP29. It kind of "went to 11", everything was there. But if you don't need that little push over the cliff, if it doesn't have to sound like the band is in the room, the Pyle works pretty well.

Makes a seriously bad HUMMING sound - avoid this unit!

This unit has one HUGE flaw, and based on the reviews, I'm not the only one who has experienced it. There is a VERY loud humming sound that comes and goes, seemingly randomly. I've noticed that if I hold the unit a certain way, or give it a good smack, the humming subsides, but it randomly creeps up from time to time and makes listening to my records very unenjoyable.

It's very lightweight, and doesn't have any kind of rubber "feet" so you need to secure it or tuck it away somewhere so it doesn't slide around. It comes with a power adapter, but that's it - you need to provide your own RCA cable to run from the preamp to your amp, (which, I guess, is to be expected). The RCA jacks on the back are a bit flimsy, and I feel like it's only a matter of time before they start to loosen up and cause connectivity issues. The grounding nut is in an awkward spot, and the extra "lip" caused by the case overhanging the edge on the back of the unit makes it difficult to get your grounding wire in there and keep it flat (I had to bend mine a bit to get it to fit in there properly). When it works.... The sound itself is a bit flat and lifeless, but I didn't expect it to be audiophile quality for that price (paid ~$30). The extra 1/4" output is a nice feature, though there's no volume control so you'll still need to plug it into an amp or use headphones with a volume control if you go that route.

TL;DR this is clearly a defective product. You get what you pay for - spend a few extra dollars and get something a bit more reputable.
