Quality supplement, made in Canada 🇨🇦
I've been taking these Magnesium Butyrate supplements for a couple weeks now and am impressed. With all supplements it's hard to really isolate the health impacts in the short term, but I must say that my digestive health has seemed improved. The capsules are easy to swallow and don't leave any nasty aftertaste. Note that the capsules themselves smell quite interesting (not unpleasant to me but may not be for everyone). The fully vegan formulation is also a huge bonus as it allows my wife to take these supplements as well. As a proud resident of Ottawa, I was also very happy to see such a good product being made locally! Highly recommend, especially to proud Canadian shoppers.

    These 22 mm cellulose-based vegetable capsules come in a bottle protected by a plastic film around the lid and a heat-sealed film on the bottle, bearing the valid NPN of 80133877 (Pure Lab Vitamins Inc. magnesium butyrate 80 mg). The bottle I received has an expiration date of JA2028, a bit below 3 years after getting it, which is very shelf-stable.

    They have a very strong weird smell similar to wet dog mixed with a gym bag in the bottle and it is transferred to my hands as I pick them up, so I have to wash my hands after taking them. However, they don’t have that much of a taste when taken orally, nor do they seem to have much of one when burped. They are quite big, and the bottle recommends taking two 1 (totalling 160 mg) to 2 (totalling 320 mg) times a day. Based on those recommendations, that means one bottle can last anywhere from 60 to 30 days.

    Since they are made with magnesium butyrate rather than salts like oxide or citrate, I have not experienced any digestive symptoms whilst taking them, and I tolerate them well. The price of the capsules is within the price range for butyric acid chelates, but if you don’t know you need the butyric acid, only the magnesium, I would heartily recommend bisglycinate (also called glycinate) instead as it is less expensive than butyrate.

    This is made by or for Pure Lab Vitamins Inc., a company in Ontario. It’s not clearly stated on the bottle if it’s made for or by that company.

    The pills use vegan capsules (no gelatin according to the label), they're easy to swallow (pictured next to a quarter for reference), the pills have a faint unpleasant smell, easy to ignore if swallowed quickly.

    The pills come in a plastic bottle, easy to open, but doesn't have any child proof protection, it will simple open when twisted, so be carful with it if you have curious toddlers around.

    Overall I like these pills in term of shape, value and vegan ingredients, highly recommended if that's what you're looking for.

    After medical issue that resulted in the removal of a portion of my digestive system, my healthcare provider suggested using various supplements that would help make up for the loss and the related functionality.

    I've been using various formulations over that decade and have had some good success. When I stop taking the supplements for a short period, I always have recurring problems develop. Getting back to the regimen makes things smooth out again after a few days.

    I won't go into a bunch of details on why this is good for the body in general, but it has more of a focus on the digestive tract. There is a lot of information available online to start with, but the best solution is to seek out a healthcare provider or pharmacist who is familiar with the benefits of a supplement such as this. With something like this, it's also best to understand what foods can help or reduce the efficacy of this supplement.

    👀 Before starting any supplement that's not a "standard," such as Vitamins C and D, it's a good idea to talk with your healthcare provider. I always see our holistic practitioner and have him test whether or not I should be using anything new. Everyone's physiology and nutrition requirements can vary greatly.

    This is the first product I've tried made by PURE LAB. So far, I'm happy with it. At the minimum recommended dose (on the bottle) of two capsules per day, this makes it a two-month supply. It's hard to make a comparison based on alternatives here on 鶹, as there aren't many with the same formulation. When I ordered the bottle, it was priced at $49.95 for the 120 capsules. With something like this, the best option is to talk with a healthcare provider to make sure the correct dose is taken daily.

    I will probably order again, but will take a few more weeks to get a better understanding of how well this particular combination and amount of each ingredient per capsule works before doing so.

    At this point, I have nothing negative to say about the product, but it would be nice to know where it's made to have a better understanding of the quality control involved in its production.

    Butyric acid is found in butter and a compound commonly used in chocolates as a stabiliser and preservative, giving certain brands their characteristic vomitty flavour.

    Anyway, it turns out magnesium butyrate has a number of benefits for gut integrity and for regulating gut inflammation. I will continue to take these to take care of my bowels. The butter vomit smell is admittedly kind of hard to get used to and I have to wash my rank hands after handling the pills, but at least the smell is not harmful.
