- Reviewed in Canada on April 29, 2025The Ohuhu Sketchbook is primarily for drawing tools, and I tested it with different pencils and pens and even watercolour paint.
I enjoyed sketching in the Ohuhu Sketchbook. It is useful as a practice sketchbook, and I like that it has a spiral at the top for turning the pages.
Even though the paper pages are thin, my tests showed there was no bleed-through to the back side of the paper from any of the following drawing tools I tried: Pilot pencils, graphite pencils, pigment liners, marker pens, and colouring pencils.
A nice feature is that the paper stands up really well to erasing without leaving any residue.
The paper is primarily meant for dry media, but I also tried it with a light wash of watercolour paint. The colour did not bleed to the other side of the paper, which was interesting. However, as I expected, the paper buckled up slightly. I would not recommend using it for water-based or wet material.
Overall, the sketchbook has a nice quality feel to it and is useful for many types of drawing. I recommend it.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 31, 2025Pros:
- The paper quality is better than most of the cheaper sketchbooks I’ve used. It’s thick enough that I can use coloured pencils, graphite, charcoal, and gel pens without worrying about bleed through or the paper warping.
- The perforated pages make it easy to tear out your art if you want to share or frame it, without wrecking the rest of the pad or leaving a mess.
- The warm white paper is easier on the eyes, and colours look a bit richer and more accurate compared to really bright white paper I’ve tried in other books.
- It’s a good size for a desk or tossing in a backpack. Feels portable but still roomy enough to work on bigger sketches, so you don’t feel cramped for space.
Cons:
- None.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 19, 2025I'm not an artist, and one piece of paper looks the same as any other to me- besides variations in color or thickness. My adult niece however, has been sketching and drawing since childhood, and easy gifts for her are artist supplies. Sketch pads for her are an ongoing need, so I decided to just get her another one. Not being an artist, I just got this one because the paper is made of a sustainable bamboo, and doesn't tear easily.
She is absolutely thrilled with this product. It works well with all her various pencils, and lines don't make indents on the other pages. She doesn't work with pastels or paints, but has been experimenting with alcohol markers here and there, and the paper holds up well to that without bleed through. Somehow in my ignorance of art supplies I stumbled across a really good product, and now I know.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 21, 2025I love the thoughtful packaging this sketch pad arrived in. (I call it a sketch pad rather than a sketchbook, as the rings are on the top, narrow side of the paper.) The company Ohuhu places the pad in a perfectly fitted, low density corrugated cardboard box which functions as a shipping container. Very environmentally friendly, considering also that the paper is made from bamboo, an easily renewable resource. The company provides a test sample of the paper inside the box along with your still-sealed pad so that, if necessary, you can test whether the weight and texture of the paper will meet your needs. You don’t have to unseal the pad, which means you can return it intact if you need something different. The paper is a bit lightweight, but will work well for children’s drawings and light pencil sketches. Since pencil sketching is what I need it for, I’m very happy with my new Ohuhu sketch pad (sketchbook).
- Reviewed in Canada on April 22, 2025Very smooth paper, quality construction of the book itself, and very practical feature of perforation at the top of each sheet. Love the size, it's great for actually having the freedom to draw something substantial enough to frame. The feel of the paper is super smooth and does erase easily without tearing or pilling.
I only wish the paper was ever so slightly thicker so it could work well for acrylic paint, and not just dry mediums as it's intended to. Overall, great quality for the size and the current discounted price of $16CAD is reasonable IMO, for those looking to exclusively draw with dry mediums, and may want to frame their work.
- Reviewed in Canada on May 8, 2025Very nice quality of paper, neither paint or markers bled through the page (and I had my 10 year old daughter have free reign with a few pages).
The spiral binding is nice as the edges are not perforated, so it reduces the amount of accidentally torn priceless masterpieces that must be displayed in our home art gallery - which in turn avoids a lot of drama, frustration, and crushing heartbreak and complete devastation.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 21, 2025This sketchbook arrived in a very sturdy cardboard box, which I really appreciated—it protected it perfectly, with no bent corners or damaged pages.
What I love most about this sketchbook is the material: it’s FSC-certified and made from bamboo fiber. Since bamboo grows much faster than trees, it’s a more sustainable and environmentally friendly choice, which makes it even more appealing.
The sketch book itself is thick, as you can see in my photo. It's designed specifically for dry media, so it's ideal for sketching, drawing, and other pencil or pen work—not meant for watercolors or paint.
Overall, I’m very satisfied. It's a thoughtfully made, high-quality sketchbook that’s great for artists who care about both performance and sustainability.

- Reviewed in Canada on May 28, 2025This is a very high quality sketch book. I am very impressed at the package as a while including the quality of paper and binding - this is just a very good product.
The paper is thick, perfect for sketching with crayons, charcoal, pencils, etc. - I'm not sure that using wet paints would be a good idea with this particular pad unless you removed the pages first.
Great to recommend for personal use, or as a great gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great paper
My daughter asked for some nice sketching notebooks and after I recently got some Ohuhu markets and was impressed by the quality, I decided to give this one a shot. The paper feels as expected and is smooth and has a nice feel. I thought it was a good weight and I like the top spiral and perforations at the top of each page. My daughter is the one who actually used it, though, and she reports that it's nice paper to draw on. She pretty much only uses pencils and she reported having no tearing or bleeding, even with erasing multiple times in one spot. I did warn her that if she used a gel pen she might want to put a backing paper in but so far she said she hasn't had a problem. Overall I think this is a great pad and would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thick, textured paper that's a joy to work with.
I've never used bamboo paper before and I ended up really liking it. Even my little one loves it for her art. The paper's got this thick, slightly rough texture that gives pencils and coloured pencils a kind of spatial thickness that looks quite distinct. It's not glossy or smooth, and it grabs onto graphite in a way that makes things look bold. It actually made me rediscover some coloured pencils that I thought were a bit too washed out on finer paper.
It's meant for dry media where it really shines, but we've also thrown acrylic markers and felt tips at it (mostly because that's what my little one loves) and it holds up surprisingly well. My little one loves filling pages with thick layered felt and acrylic colours, and the paper doesn't buckle or bleed through like some thinner pads. I'm impressed.
The tone of the paper is not a stark white, more of a warm off-white, which is quite pleasing. It's easier on the eyes and makes colours feel a little more natural, especially with softer shades. It can be a bit unforgiving when it comes to erasing though—basic rubbers don't always do the job cleanly on this paper, so you might need something a little softer and more pliable.
The spiral binding is solid, there's plenty of paper included, it's thick (and a little heavy) yet it's easy to flip through or tear out pages without issues. Be warned though; despite how thick the paper feels, it's still capable of paper cuts, so you still have to handle it with care!
Overall, it's a really nice sketchpad with paper that's a joy to work with. I'm very happy with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique type of paper
I was pleased to be able to try this as I have used a lot of different types of art paper over the years and also, I use Ohuhu markers. The paper states that it is 'tear resistant'. It's not. It tore pretty much immediately. That's not really an issue because anyone who draws would expect the paper to tear if ripped. If anything, it's just a strange boast to make. The paper has bamboo in it and this makes for an interesting texture. It's like thin watercolour paper.
It states that the paper is suitable for dry media. I tried it with graphite pencil and it enhances the pigment of the graphite, making it look darker. I used two types of eraser on it and if you press too hard with the pencil, you can still see the line. Not so much if you don't press as hard but that's to be expected with any paper, so no surprise there.
I also tried it with acrylic paint pens and these worked well. The paper took several layers. I then tried it with a range of high quality coloured pencils over the paint pen and that didn't work well. I tried the coloured pencils on their own and this was a strange experience as the colours blended together in a way I've not seen before on paper so that was interesting. It seems to prefer some brands over others. It was possible to put multiple layers of coloured pencil over each other and still see the pigment clearly, but then when blending they all kind of merged together and you could even move the pigment around a bit on the paper.
I also tried it with Ohuhu alcohol markers. It wasn't the ideal effect so I would say that this paper isn't best suited to alcohol markers, and they bled through to the other side (but not to the next page underneath). Again, after laying the colour down and then with a different colour over this, you could move the ink around. It didn't blend very well to be honest. I'd say that overall, this paper is best suited to graphite pencil but even then with it being textured, it will make hyperrealism difficult as the paper isn't smooth enough. It's a strange paper. It says it's for dry media but after testing it, the paint pens were the best on it! Going forward, I'm not sure what medium I'll be using it with but will persevere!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Quality Sketchbook For DRY MEDIA!
This Ohuhu 9"x12" sketchbook is a fantastic sketchbook! It is a sketchbook that is made for DRY MEDIA (pencil, graphite, charcoal, etc), and it works great with dry media! It is spiral bound on the top with 100 sheets of white paper that are perforated at the top. The paper is 79 lb/110 gsm, so the paper is on the thinner side. It is also acid free and it is made with a mixture of 55% bamboo fiber/45% cellulose. There is a little bit of texture on this paper, but not so much that it is rough and unpleasant to draw on.
I tested a few different art mediums on this paper. This paper handles graphite pencils and colored pencils really well, and it even handles soft pastels and oil pastels well. However, I prefer pastel paper that has more texture for soft and oil pastels, but the paper in this sketchbook works well for pastel sketches. I did not test charcoal because I don't use charcoal, but I know that this paper will handle charcoal very well. I also tested alcohol markers, which aren't a dry medium, but I just wanted to see what would happen. The alcohol markers bled through just like I thought they would because this sketchbook is not made for markers or other wet media. This paper is also easy to erase graphite off of and it does not pill or tear from erasing.
This sketchbook is a great quality, durable sketchbook that will take quite a while to fill. It works perfectly for what is was designed for, and it is a great value for the price! I recommend this to artists of all experience levels and ages. It would also make a really nice gift to the artist in your life!
