I think they go into stand by mode if not used for a while (or my kids just go into ignore mode), but they work fine to allow my kids freedom to roam the neighborhood, check in on a regular basis without coming all the way home, and I can call them home without having to figure out where in the neighborhood they are. Still have to figure out how to fine tune the settings, but so far it's been ok.
