The reason why psychiatric hospitals began to shut down by the early 1900s is because the food industry began adding Niacin, and other B Vitamins, into prepackaged foods, especially breakfast cereals. Still, the average person, even in today's world, is NOT getting enough of this supplement. Many people are still suffering from different levels of depression, addictions, as well as, weight gain, for example.
The problem with getting most people to take this particular supplement, is the "Flush" that inevitably occurs shortly after taking it. The first time I took it, I turned red from top to toe and I itched like something had gotten under my skin. LOL.. the Niacin literally had gotten under my skin, but in a good way. At the time, I had not had the benefit of knowing what to expect so I thought the worst was occurring and almost considered going to the hospital. However, after an hour or so, the heat and itch of the Flush dissipated. Since then I did a lot of research (Abram Hoffer is an excellent source) and learned that amongst many other things, this vitamin really stokes my internal metabolism. Before Niacin, I always had a hard time maintaining recently lost weight. But I don't have this problem anymore. I have found that Niacin gives a usually very sluggish metabolism, a bit of an up-tick. Always a good thing. But don't expect to see immediate weight loss results -- eat right and give it time and you'll notice you have more energy -- for me, walking for half an hour everyday outdoors has now become a new norm.
Also, because Niacin helps relax the mind it can pull you out of the doldrums. If you have had problems getting to sleep, bedtime is probably an excellent time to take it, especially if you don't care for the Flush experience. Personally, I actually look forward to the Flush because when it doesn't happen I know I need to take a little bit more. If you are new to Niacin I highly recommend that you begin with the smallest dosage possible until you get used to the Flush. Unfortunately this particular format (capsules) while more easily swallowed, cannot be divided into smaller pieces without making a bit of a mess. You may want to consider looking for it in caplet format.
Like I said in the subject line, this is a supplement that makes a noticeable difference not only because you feel it working in your body when being absorbed into your bloodstream but because there's a significant boost to mental well-being over time. Definitely not a supplement to overlook. I've personally used the NOW brand on and off for many years and have no complaints -- it's a good product. All that's left to say is: enjoy the Flush and join the ranks of the even-keeled people.
