The 105mm Macro lens is the best of the best no matter what brand you shoot with. It gives a true 1:1 ratio. The Nikon Z lens is amazing when its paired to a Z body, in my case my Z9. Almost a multi purpose lens, can you use it for portraits, yes, is thats intended job? No, its ideally meant for the little things...bugs, jewelry, plants etc. The photo shared is of a Brachymeria Wasp that i found in our yard, very very tiny wasp i might add; but through a macro lens it gives you a whole new perspective! Try it out at night too (with a flash) you won't be disappointed!

    I recently upgraded to the mirrorless world. I already have the F-mount version of this lens and was always very pleased with it. I initially decided that I would keep using my F-mount lenses with my new Z8 body. However, after reading many reviews and technical articles on the improvements to the new Z lenses I began to question that logic.

    I started by purchasing this 105mm micro lens. It was a wise decision! Because of fundamental changes to the Z-mount made possible by the mirrorless design of cameras (wider flange diameter, closer rear lens element distance to sensor plane, etc.), lens designs have been improved. Noticeably improved!

    One notible improvement for me was increased edge-to-edge sharpness. Macro lenses are already flat-plane lenses so sharpness and lack of distortion across the sensor plane is already a given. And yet, improvements have been gained in this new design.

    I purchased this lens about 1 year ago when it was on sale. The lens is super sharp on my Z7, even wide open @f2.8. It also works well the built in focus stacking feature built in to the camera. I have not done any people portraits with the lens, but I imagine it will be stellar based on what I have seen. The build quality is very good with a metal base, plastic body (keeps the weight reasonable), focus limiter, and programmable function button. The display is a neat feature, but I haven't found it to be super useful, since the info can be displayed on the top camera display. While you may see some cheaper z-mount lenses with a greater macro ratio, I doubt you will find something that has all of the features this lens has, including built in image stabilization. If I have one complaint... it would be the "focus by wire" which is a let down if you like manual focus. This is my first dedicated macro lens, and I am very happy with the lens and results it gives.
