One of the best games I've experienced on the PS4

One of the best games I've experienced on the PS4
People just aren't giving this game a chance. I encourage you to go into this with an open mind and play through to the end. The gameplay, mechanics, and graphics have all been improved since the first. The story is where fans are divided on but play this game until the end and then form your own opinion. Don't just listen to all the haters as a good number of them gave up after partway through the game and some even as early as a couple of hours. This is a dark, brutal, unforgiving but also beautiful story in the world of The Last of Us. If you're looking for a feel-good, happy run of the mill game, this is not for you.

So much to offer gamers from the amount of visual detail in its environments, the sheer brilliant visuals, its excellent stealth, action, survival gameplay & mechanics, dynamic enemy A.I. & encounters, fantastic soundtrack, exceptional performances from its cast, a unique, thoughtful & meaningful story, with high production values as triple A game, a tremendous amount of world class craftsmanship put into the final product, it is truly one of the greatest games in the last 10 years. The best stealth, action & survival gameplay ever created. Every scenario here can be replayed a thousand different ways, never taking place the same way. Absolutely the best & most immersive Cat & Mouse style gameplay through its open areas with fantastic dynamic A. I.

As for the story, If you are expecting "The Adventures Of Super Joel & Ellie" you will be sorely disappointed. That wouldn't even make sense in such a dark, tragic & hostile world. The game is a grimdark revenge tale, this isn't comfort fiction here folks. If you want that, go play Uncharted instead. The game picks up 4 years after the events of the first game. What nobody realizes is that some one, some where, is brooding over the events that took place in the firefly hospital from the ending to the original game. Joel & Ellie are far from the people they were, now living in a civilized community. They gather supplies, kill off the infected, take in new survivors, patrol the areas, & in general, contribute to the camp any way they can.

Through some unforeseen events, on the eve of a great snow storm, with a horde of infected making its ways through forest, Joel finds himself in a unavoidable situation. What happens here is hard to watch as the past Joel thought was behind him, catches up with him. From here the story truly begins. The game puts you into the shoes of two characters, one being Ellie, the other being Abby. Through this we get context & a deep understanding of who these people are, their motivations, & psychological demons.

The story may be a revenge tale but one that isn't afraid to ask us to ponder on our own nature. I would never have thought that i would empathize with the antagonist (Abby), or see the protagonist (Ellie) as just as much a villain. What kind of story can do that? Who is the hero, the villain, the protagonist, the antagonist? Both characters are all these things, it just depends on your perspective. That is the key thing here, to show perspective.

The game itself is about hate, violence, spitefulness, revenge & forgiveness. We see the psychological problems humans have, our nature towards hate & violence, which only continues the cycle. We see the consequences of our actions & where that leaves us, in a very bitter, empty place, losing apart of ourselves & potentially the people we love, in order to satisfy these demons.

We also find forgiveness to be something we choose not to give into, even though it leaves us in a better place. Forgiveness, hate, revenge, being the big themes here. The lessons in which this story & game taught me i find very valuable. This isn't John Wick, giving into meaningless spectacle for the sake of entertainment. Its was something so much more. There is many philosophical questions about the right & wrong, our humanity, our tragic nature as human beings at play here.

This is why a lot of people see the intelligence behind the story. For many it is the most impactful & meaningful game of the year. The ending is very bittersweet, depressing, yet hopeful. Both characters have emerged with deep revelations about their selves & their existence, but ultimately come out better for it. All in all, its not the game i was expecting, but one that i am thankful for having experienced. If you are open to the kind of game it is trying to be, then you should find something that is very memorable. The game is very divisive, it took some big risks, & it is far from your typical comfort fiction. This a grimdark style revenge tale, one that is very much worth your time. Don't let the negative reviews influence you, open yourself to the experience, & make your own opinion.

This game is one of the best experiences i have ever had in gaming. The balance between a cinematic narrative & creative, stealth, action, survival gameplay, is exceptional here. This game is the reason why i play games. Play it for yourself, be open to where it leads you. If you love tragic stories as i do, this one is not to be missed.

The Last of Us Part II has been an unforgettable experience from start to finish. As a sequel to one of the best games of its generation, it sets the bar even higher. The storytelling is masterful, with an emotional depth and complexity that left me thinking about it long after finishing the game. The characters, especially Ellie and Abby, are beautifully developed, and the game doesn’t shy away from exploring the harsh realities of their lives in a post-apocalyptic world.

The gameplay is refined and smooth, with improved mechanics over the first game. The stealth, combat, and exploration are all top-notch, offering a balanced mix of tension and action. The graphics are stunning, and the environments are meticulously detailed, making the world feel alive despite the desolate setting.

While the story may be controversial for some, it’s thought-provoking and compelling, pushing players to question notions of revenge, morality, and human nature. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, and while it can be intense at times, it’s a deeply rewarding journey.

If you’re a fan of narrative-driven games with rich storytelling and immersive gameplay, The Last of Us Part II is a must-play. It’s one of the best games on the PlayStation 4 and an experience I won’t forget.

Is this game perfect? No. I'd say it is a 4.7/5, which still makes it one of my favorite games of all time. It was a polished experience which improved upon many of the the elements in its predecessor.

There are a lot of really great things about TLOU 2: the combat, graphics, environment, gameplay, sound design, animations, and the music - they are all flawless. The NPC (non-player character) AI feels responsive and realistic during combat. I felt so much tension during every enemy encounter, and had a blast using the environment in creative ways to take the enemies down. The stealth mechanics were especially memorable. I highly recommend playing this game with a headset.

I cannot discuss TLOU 2 without mentioning the elephant in the room - the narrative. Although I really enjoyed the story, I do understand why it is hated by many. The story trailers were misleading, although I understand that Naughty Dog did it to preserve the "shock" value of some of the events that transpired in the story. It was also marketed as Ellie's story, although you end up spending a third of the game playing as another character.

The story is also nonlinear, full of flashbacks. I can see why some people might be put off by this, because it does make the story feel disjointed. However, by the time I reached the end, all the story elements came together and I was pretty satisfied with the conclusion. The story is very dark, with many gruesome events taking place. There were a few too many new characters introduced in the game, some of which debuted well after the halfway point. Some of these characters felt unnecessary.

The game did feel a little repetitive at times, although the stellar gameplay mechanics kept things interesting all the way to the end. I think that the game could have been 5 hours shorter without losing any storytelling elements. It is pretty long for a linear action game - it took me around 33 hours to complete, but I took my sweet time exploring the beautiful world and appreciating the attention to detail. Most people can probably finish it around 24-27 hours. Although I have only played through it once, I feel that the story will be more enjoyable during a second playthrough since you will already know the answers to the the questions raised early in the story.

Overall, I highly recommend this game. It is a beautifully crafted and well-polished technical masterpiece with great characters, gameplay, music, and a slightly flawed narrative.

This game is a LOT of cinematics and some gameplay interwoven. It's a masterfully told story, with a pretty heavy-handed moral regarding the cycle of violence. That aside, yes there are gay and trans people featured in the story. Why is this so bad for some reviewers? These are people that actually exist in the world. Cordyceps-infected do not exist. Trying to force your narrow world-view onto everyone else is sillier than complaining about a game that features a person who loves someone of the same gender. And to those claiming the game is trying to force IT's worldview onto the player, please. It's doing nothing of the sort. If your big objection to this game is that it features people different from yourself, but you're OK with smashing in people's heads with lead pipes, 2x4s, hammers, and freaking machetes, there is something wrong with you.
The game itself is incredibly linear. You do not get to choose what actions the characters take, you're just along for the ride. It's almost difficult to go back to such linear gameplay after the many open-world games that have upped the ante in the last 10 years. Having said that, this journey is totally worth the ride.
Graphically, this game is top notch (for the PS4 generation). Controls can be a bit laggy with button presses, but to be fair I'm not sure if it disables inputs while other actions are being taken. It just gets frustrating to wait for the character animation to complete a task before you can press the next button. Not a big deal though.
There is a high level of brutality on display. The aforementioned smashing of heads, watching infected tear your character's throat out, and the NPCs ripped apart by your homemade mines are all a bit much due to the realistic nature of the characters.
No spoilers, but certain deaths are excruciating. Especially when you as the player have no choice but to let your character cave someone's skull in.
This is an adult game. I don't have kids, but I certainly wouldn't let any play it if I did. Just my 2 cents.
One major complaint I have is the "hearing" feature which lets you detect infected or enemies through walls and such. Why would you put that into a game and then spend most of the game finding ways to make it irrelevant? You can listen all you want before going thru a door, but until you enter the next area, the enemies are undetectable. And then there are enemies that are "too quiet" to detect. And then there are infected that jump out at you from big growths on the walls. I think Naughty Dog realized they made a mistake giving the player that kind of ability in the first game, since it removes any chance of jump scares or true tension.
In the end, I'm very glad I played it.
