The game has been getting a lot of hate for stupid things such as having a more diverse cast that isn't "stereotypical" for said types of games, I mean honestly the main things that should affect how one would rate the game would be the story and gameplay, but I've seen a lot of people hating the game because of things like having a multiple “trans" characters whom which only one is even trans, the other is just muscly (she's a soldier on top of that). The game goes in a less linear direction both story-wise which might not bode well for the more sentimental die-hard fans (or dudebros who hate the fact that story doesn't focus on father/daughter/damsel-in-distress dynamics but rather a lesbian relationship and revenge/vengeance missions), but otherwise it has good gameplay with more open-world instances that will reward those who take the time to actually explore (that thankfully doesn't require the abundant use of shivs, at least for the most part) and a good story (depending on one's personal preference of course).

In summary it's a darker game story wise then it's predecessors, but an overall fresher and more edgier game. They removed components that prevented players from fully experiencing the game like shivs amongst other things. Honestly the game goes in a different direction then what most others have and personally I think they did it greatly. Also because just because a main character is a lesbian or not stereotypically feminine does not mean that the company behind the game is pandering, you're just homophobic lol. JK Rowling randomly saying a bunch of characters are minorities (lgbt, disabled) on twitter just to make her books more "diverse" is pandering, this game does anything but. If you don't like games with these kind of things, just don't buy them.
