Before I start off I just wanted to say as a Canadian I am proud to see Kobo, a Canadian company, make these awesome e-Readers that actually seem to come from a company that cares about it's users holistically, rather than �鶹�� which unfortunately has not listened to it's Kindle users in sometime. The Kobo Clara Colour is why 13 years as a loyal Kindle using kid is up. Back Story about the Kindle I purchased: I bought the new 6" Kindle as an avid Kindle user since I was in Grade 5 (2011 got my first Kindle Touch), and while I didn't read a lot, I still love reading technical articles, non fiction modern history stuff, tech, politics, wikipedia articles, textbooks, theory PDFs etc. so not a conventional bookworm reader but there you have it especially on my phone and Mac I read a lot in that sense. I've owned several Kindles over the years and had a Kindle PaperWhite and Kindle Scribe (both of which are now up for sale on Facebook Marketplace) and thought the new 6" Kindle would be a good buy this Black Friday month (usually $145 CAD but on sale for $120 CAD) since I want something explicitly small and pocketable. I am a big �鶹�� shopper and Prime member anyways, and thought it would be a good idea for a treat for myself. I am very sorry but �鶹��, I was beyond disappointed and frankly disappointed as a loyal Kindle user for the past 13 years. I bought it excited thinking that I would have a tiny pocketable portable cute little e-reader finally. So I got the new 6" Kindle and it was very cute. Or so I thought until I turned it on and realized there's nothing that compelling at the price point other than a Prime subscription for buyers remorse: - NO WARM LIGHT!! I am sorry but are you kidding me �鶹��? It's 2025; selling an e-reader valued at $145 CAD but adding some colour changing LEDs or different hues to the most basic Kindle for a few extra pennies was not possible? And to have pay more for such a basic feature when it is already expensive? EXTREME dissatisfaction going from my Kindle Paperwhite especially since I wanted something smaller. I don't need the light of Jesus or the Teletubbies sun coming out when I am trying to read a book in my bed before I sleep. I just want a cozy homey warm light option. To make matters worse, on the Kindle 6" (2024), compared to my older Kindle Paperwhite, the backlight has a very blue tint. When I mean blue, I mean very very blue. Look, I have a thing for people with blue eyes, but not blue hued ebook text. Seriously �鶹��? Come on man, you guys could've spent a few more cents on LEDs that are not cheap monochrome ones that emit BlueRay lasers into my eyes. It literally looks like I am at the hospital with the hue of the lights. - No colour e-ink... very disappointing to not have the option of a colour mini sized Kindle in nearly 2025 but okay... then the Kindle Coloursoft had massive factory defect design flaws so thats not an option either. So as of Dec 2024 in Canada, there is sadly, still no colour Kindle available. - No waterproofing, not a huge deal but nice to have considering competitors offer it for much less. But I couldn't care less. Wanting to get people trapped into your ecosystem where there are putting more fences being put up to prevent readers from leaving the Kindle ecosystem (eg. can't download book manually onto your computer on newer Kindle devices using their serial numbers) but then cannot offer the most basic features at such a price point? Come on... But then: So I thought okay I will suck it up from �鶹�� for a few years until they come up with a smaller colour Kindle with a warm backlight option, especially because I was loyal to Kindle and my technical (expensive af) books were on the �鶹�� Kindle e-store that's not compatible with other brands obviously. That is until I did some digging and found that you can use Calibre to convert �鶹��'s proprietary e-book format into the open source ePUB format. Then I came across a post on reddit talking about the Kobo Clara Colour. Thats when I decided to jump ship and get the Kobo Clara Colour. I was blown away. WOW HOLY ****! Colour. Waterproofing. WARM LIGHT!!! All for $180 in a small form factor e-reader from a Canadian company. It's almost as if the engineers developed a product based on what the consumer wants! I never heard of Pocket before buying this, but using it with its native integration on Kobo is life changing just WOW WOW WOW! Pocket integration so I can sync articles from my laptop and phone directly and over the air to my Kobo e-reader with Pocket (without needing Calibre or tethering my reader to my computer)... A true 2024 level e-reader. It has OverDrive integration so I can pull books from my local library. And the Kobo Plus library has a decent selection as my older Kindle Unlimited subscription. The Power button placement on the Kobo seems much more human and natural than the Kindle too. It reminded me of the time when in 2011 I was in class as a Grade 5 kid with my then new Kindle Touch and other kids in my class then saw this magic e-ink tablet that looked like paper and said Wow. I had that same moment with the Kobo Clara Colour. All for nearly the same price as that disappointing 2024 Kindle 6", and the fact that �鶹�� botched their own colour Kindle launch is embarrassing (no hate to the technical team or engineers though, its a massive feat and colour e-ink is difficult and I respect them tons). All in all thank you Kobo. The only two features I wish to see in the future is the Pocket feature expanded (more options to download content, search for more content etc.), and the biggest one I really do wish is there was a pure full system dark mode feature including for the GUI (eg. Home Screen etc) not just reading so there is a consistent dark mode through the whole native UI. I know you can invert it in the Kobo Clara Colour's developer panel settings (but this inverts the coloured content too). A new software update with proper dark mode for the whole system and UI (simple fix) without inverting colours of images and bam you have a perfect device. Other than that I hope colour e-ink technology improves so we may get better contrast ratios for text on colour e-ink devices that Kobo can use in their future products. Colour e-ink is very hard to get right, and I understand why a colour e-readers would have worse contrast than a non colour one (read the technical article here if you are curious https://spectrum.ieee.org/how-e-ink-developed-full-color-epaper ). Sure, subjectively the text on the aforementioned B&W Kindle is slightly better in terms of contrast and sharpness than the Clara Colour, but all in all awesome job Kobo hats off to you and your engineering team. Maybe one day we will get native reddit and wikipedia support on e-readers who knows! Thank you Kobo, you keep that spirit alive of avid e-book readers who want something that benefits the e-reader community and honestly humanity as a whole. Your company helps people pick up e-books and learn things productively with their time, instead of sitting around on TikTok watching brain rot memes (I am guilty of the latter sometimes though lol). I am so happy with Kobo and Kobo Clara Colour that I wanted to write this, and funnily enough I am going to go on my amazon.ca account and write this same review for the Kobo Clara Colour. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I didn't need to wait years for a small, cute compact little colour e-reader with warm lighting, when the solution was close to home right here in Canada. From a very happy customer! Hell I would've been happy to pay more for the Kobo Clara Colour I am surprised it was only $180 CAD lol!
