    (This review is specific to the desire to capture a wide dynamic range of sound, the natural environment as opposed to commentary)

    Sound has always been the Achilles heel of action cameras and smart phones, suffering terribly from the slightest breeze and wind across the small internal mics. Insta360 x5 has several modes for sound capture and all can be best described as: "adequate"; suitable for reducing some wind noise (and in the process rendering the sound mono sounding) or prioritizing voice only or very loud sounds over subtlety. Accessing the stereo or 360 sound options and there is heavy wind noise present and noticeable selfie stick noise. Probably why you haven't heard many (if any) youtube reviews using those options.

    I hoped to capture subtle stereo/ surround soundscapes (such birdsong from a walk through a forest) to go with my 360° footage via this adapter and an external microphone solution only discover any sound inputted would be processed; rendered thin and almost flat line, the bass frequencies and low noise ambience stripped out of the recording thanks to the cameras apparent noise gating software that only lets through the loudest sounds. (Even those sound "processed"; the stripping out of frequencies will do that) It means sadly this adapter is useless for my purposes and I'm saddled with the onboard mics for convenience and not quality.

    In summary: This adapter is suitable for external mics to capture close commentary and loud noise events.
    It is unsuitable or unable to improve the sound for ambient recordings or low volume background sounds.
